I’ve rehydrated 15 year old tobacco in a dusty old bell jar with a few spritzes of distilled water, followed by mixing the top/bottom like biscuit dough until it’s all damp. Comes out perfect the next day, with the first oz (out of ~8) sitting on a paper towel for ten minutes before packing a bowl. The rest was fine as I smoked it over the following few weeks.

You can actually resurrect old tobacco like that? I have a couple of not-quite-finished McClelland tins from a decade ago that I never transferred to a jar. I just wrote them off as dead and unsmokeable.

Yeah: 1) Distilled water will not add microscopic mold like is possible from tap water, which to be honest, wouldn’t really matter for a 1.5oz tin if you plan on smoking through it within a couple of weeks, and 2) Don’t wet it too much all at one time—it won’t really hurt anything but you’d have to take a lot of extra time to re-dry it out into a smokable condition. Cheap bell jars from Dollar General/Walmart work great and come in all sizes.

Hey guys, my brother recently got this cool looking traditional Japanese pipe that's supposed to be antique. Can anyone help us figure out when this was made? We can't read the writing. Here's an engraving ![]() Another engraving on the side ![]() A crab design ![]() Silver stamp

Looks like that style of pipe is called a kiseru. I’m not sure where I would start researching outside of asking someone who knows Japanese to make out some branding. https://www.smokingpipes.com/smokingpipesblog/single.cfm/post/the-kiseru-overview-the-traditional-japanese-smoking-pipe

Hey Cigar & Pipe goons! I used to dabble a bit with pipes/cigars over a decade ago but it never really stuck with me. I’m back at it after all that time and am enjoying myself a lot more this time around so it might be something that’ll stick. I’ve been at it for about two months now and have been swiftly collecting a ton of samplers so I can find what I like the most. So far I seem to be trending towards darker wrappers. My favorites have been the Liga Undercrown Maduro and Liga Privada No. 9 I’ve had. On the pipes side of things I’ve just ordered a Falcon pipe and a couple bowls to get started along with some various blends to try. I know I have 4-5 briars hiding somewhere around the house from 10-15 years ago but have not located them as of yet after a house move. I’ve also caught up on this thread while I was sampling stuff and have sadly noticed a bit of a drop in participation! What happened to some of the thread regulars? I also see there’s a Discord channel? Is that where they’re all hiding out? If it’s still a thing I’d love a link so I can join!

There’s a Toronto cigar manufacturer about whom there’s essentially zero information online: https://www.correnticigars.com/products#MENU I had their petite Corona, which is a Cuban blend, and it is out of this world. Chocolatey, grassy, mineral-cedar Cuban flavor and Padron open blend. It was CAD$14! An absolutely magnificent way to spend an hour and change. I’ve got a few more sticks in two other vitolas and I’m really amped to try them.

I just picked up a few bulk ounces of C&D Black Gold Maple and Haunted Bookshop for aging. If stored together, will the Black Gold Maple overpower the Haunted Bookshop?NewFatMike posted:There’s a Toronto cigar manufacturer about whom there’s essentially zero information online: I'm intrigued, but it looks like they don't sell directly from their website. Are they sold locally or did you get them in Toronto? SonOfGhostDad fucked around with this message at 20:11 on Jun 30, 2025 |

I live in Toronto now and got them there! To buy, you’ve gotta call them on the phone or email or walk in.

Basically every single one of the Gurkhas I've bought has burned unevenly and has wrappers falling apart -- other cigars in the same humidor seem to have no such issues. Never again. Life is too short to force myself to smoke bad cigars, at what point do I just set them ablaze outside or otherwise just toss them out? Compost time?

Gurkha have never been…adequate. Smoking bad cigars sucks, it’s frustrating. As long as I had space in the humidor, I didn’t really throw anything away unless it was really vile because I thought it might help maintain humidity. No data whatsoever to back that up. Cigars don’t compost super great, I’m sure part of that is because nicotine is a neurotoxin and was adapted to kill bugs trying to eat the leaves. Maybe you can use them as a tasteful gag at an open casket funeral?

Smoked an old Jose Piedra petit caballero that's been in my humidor forever last night. It was great! The wrappers on this lot were never good, and yep this one had issues on cutting too, but it's not like I'm not happy I smoked it. The only cigars I've ever thrown out were acids that people "gifted" me.

I stopped by the local shop day before last and their selection was bare as gently caress. So I decided to check out another local spot, same. Both of these places have always been well stocked, and both mentioned its hard to get things in. The gently caress is going on?

The PCA trade show was earlier this month. Some brands at my local brick and mortar are bare as gently caress as well. It always results in low stock of cigars for about a month until they catch up on orders.

Can I get an invite to the discord? Settling into a new house in South Carolina with a covered deck so perfect to bust the old pipes out again. A buddy rolls his own cigarettes and it has me itching to some my pipes! No flavours added or anything, I swear he's smoking pipe tobacco basically. And I'm finally in a state that allows tobacco to be shipped to me so bonus points! Gonna celebrate with a new pipe and branch away from my Nording pipes. I'm seriously tempted to try the falcon pipes since they are back in stock (last time I looked, ebay was the only option)

I just ran my clay pipe through the oven’s self clean, and it is pristine. Clay pipes keep winning. I also had a spa day the rest of my pipes. Reaming bowls, cleaning stems, polishing briar. I’m tucking into Lord of the Rings, and I’m looking forward to having a pipe while I read.

Well I didn't get the info I wanted so we drove 10 hours down to SC to check out smokingpipe's shop. It's called Low Country Pipes and Cigars and has quite the selection! I didn't have the time, but there is also a lounge area and a number of blends you can sample for 25 cents a bowl. Most of the pipes on display were your standard Peterson/Savinelli tier but they did have a few Dunhills in a case. It is kinda neat that if you order anything from the website they'll have it there the next day though. 20250915_173522 by D B, on Flickr 20250915_173529 by D B, on Flickr 20250915_173535 by D B, on Flickr

Good afternoon Cigar Goons! Long time no see! I haven't had or made much time for smoking the last few years. I have young kids with increasingly demanding activities, changed careers two years ago, (back to restaurant management) and also quit smoking cigarettes. I think the last true cigar i smoked was a small Bolivar February of last year when my wife and kids were out of town and I was recovering from a vasectomy. I enjoyed it, and it definitely took my mind off the stitches in my sack! I think I mentioned in one of my last posts that I'd scored a Cohiba BHK52 that I was savin for my 35th birthday, which would have made the cigar ten years old based on the box code I recieved. Well, that milestone came and went without my making the time to enjoy that cigar with the proper reverence, so it's still quietly resting in my humidor. It'll probably come out when I am 40 and it's 15, which will be sooner than I like to think about! Anyways, I've been thinking about digging into my humidor or at least breaking out my pipe lately, as I'd like to make a point to have a relaxing hobby again that's not just popping down in front of the TV. I suppose the universe was listening, because one of my tables today happened to be the area humidor manager for a local liquor store chain that stocks and maintains failry large humidors, and a local and national rep for Drew Estate. We got to chatting a bit, as it was after the lunch rush, and before they left they gifted me two cigars and a cutter. An Undercrown Maduro corona and a brand new Nica Rustica Conneticut that's probably a toro - 6x50 size. So I'll take that as a sign and fire up a stick soon! As a bonus, my dad stopped by and dropped off some delicious smelling ribeye jerky a friend of his made!
