Third time is a charm right?
I think an entire outdoors forum makes sense, pooling some of the more outdoor related threads into it. I realize each sub forum like tfr will always have some outdoor threads in it but finding outdoors related threads in SA is kind of tricky. I remember finding hiking stuff in ylls and was kind of surprised I had to wade through men's fashion threads and weight lifting selfies to find hiking and camping.

Some people might be butt hurt but it's probably going to give better traction to the topic as a whole if the biggest outdoor megathreads are all pooled into one place.

General bearshit is great

A goon shits in the woods

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

The thing with moving the forum specific threads is that most of them have no specific focus other than “outdoors poo poo.” We don’t need fifteen generic outdoors threads in the new forum.

I can not emphasize enough that this forum reboot will live and die on people making content for it. Like actual threads about outdoors poo poo and not just sticking to single mega threads.

Cyrano4747

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

Ok, this place is now a top level and basically an RSF again. If it takes off great, we'll re-christen it. If it languishes we'll part out the active threads to new homes.

I'm basically doing a soft launch right now where I'm going to spam a few threads to get eyes on this place. Later this afternoon I'll make a forums announcement.

Here's the post I made in the DIY radio thread (suggested in TFR's outdoors thread). Anyone who can think of a thread I don't hit feel free to tweak it or use it as a template or whatever for making your own posts reminding people this place exists.

Hey radio weirdo goons. Some people over in TFR sold you out told me you might be interested in this.

The Take A Hike subforum is currently kind of dead so we’re doing what amounts to a relaunch. It was in DIY which is kind of bizarre. It’s basically getting turned back into an RSF for a bit and I’m going to do a bunch of drumming up attention for it.

Here's the moved forum, bumped to be top level for the time being like all RSFs are. I suspect it will find a new home besides DIY in the future, since it was always kind of a weird fit as a sub there. The new name of the forum is The Great Outdoors.

Anyways forums live or die by having specialist, niche threads. A lot of other subs have outdoors-y threads that are general purpose subject chat things which is good and fine. We don’t need to fill the forum with ten different camping/chat threads with different crews. TFR can have a video game thread even though Games is a forum, for example, because a general chat thread for gun nerds to talk about what they're playing today can't replicate the dozens upon dozens of unique threads that delve much deeper into specific subjects that a dedicated Games forum has.

So, we are going to need some threads on the sort of niche outdoorsy poo poo that an actually goony outdoors forum would talk about. So if any of you ever wanted to have an OP of a thread about what hiking boots are good or how to make your own fishing lures or UrbEx or what the gently caress ever here’s your chance. Some people mentioned that some of you have strong opinions about radios etc for the outdoors. If you've ever wanted to be the glamorous OP of a thread about walkie talkies in the "going outside" forum of a web 1.0 comedy website, well, now's your chance tiger.

I've already started what amounts to a soft launch of the reinvigorated forum. It's now a top level forum and we'll see where it goes from there. We've press ganged a couple of current mods into keeping an eye on it and, in true RSF fashion, if it takes off again we'll pull some people as mods from within that community.

Also just post a photo I. A thread and say “this here is the photo thread now”

Like I can do it if you want a photo of people not social distancing on the restaurant patio across from my apartment. That’s kinda technically outdoors I guess.

Or don't, like it's totally fine to create a thread you see a need for and let other people provide the content. At worst it won't gain traction and will drop off the page.

I think a dedicated outdoorsy forum is a great idea. Although if there are already a bunch of established sub-communities in other forums and you're not going to move those threads here then I think it's going to make it a lot harder for the general outdoors forum to take off. IMO it would be much more likely to be successful if you moved as many established threads here as possible (assuming the posters in those threads are not particularly against it). If they want to keep discussing whatever topic back in whatever forum they were at they can just make a new thread and keep doing it, that's fine. But I think if you want a top level forum to take off you're going to have to do a certain amount of forcing people to change where they post or they're just going to stick to what they're already doing for the most part.

Or maybe I'm wrong and everyone will happily move in if you just tell them it exists, who knows!

Landscaping is separate from the Veg and general plants threads which are sister threads as it were, tends to be a lot of shuffling people with questions between the pair. It’s a heavy machinery and clever design vs regular people with spades thing 🙂

e: iirc the split came about because they wanted to separate all the allotment chat from the plant chat.

Well, whatever you do, better gatekeep to make sure we don't have a gardening thread here. It would be horrible if people read that thread, and started posting more about plants, or became aware of the threads in DIY. For gently caress sake, jaded burnout, you couldn't even give it one day? Great job revitalizing by locking threads.

Can we get a list of forbidden outdoor activities, so we know what not to start threads about in the future?

For someone so enthusiastic about plants you seem to have a poor grasp on the concept of pruning.

Maybe TGO will get a gardening thread later, maybe it won't, but we're trying to form a new place out of part of an old one and it's going to be a bit messy to begin with.

If this upsets you, well, I won't be around here forever. In the meantime, don't take it personally.

An argument could be made that there should be an indoor plant thread in DIY and an outdoor plant thread here, I stopped posting in the DIY plant thread because it was mostly indoor plants and that’s fair enough and everything.

Yes, I know I'm old, get off my fucking lawn so I can yell at these clouds.

Something else is that not every thread can only exist in one place. There's a hunting thread in TFR and they thought it would be better to also have a hunting thread here, so I said OK to that. I could see the tFR hunting thread being more focused on how to outfit your rifle, for example, and the one here being more about fieldcraft or whatever.

I dunno I'm a porch thread kind of outdoor admin.

Keeping gardening in DIY and plants in general in TGO seems to be the best fit, from the conversations I've had. Next mod can change it if they disagree.

This stings, but also gave me a chuckle.

Feels more like the supervisor of (what I thought was) the community garden came along and thinned out the lone seedling I had just planted.

It's okay I totally get it. If it helps I do truly want this place to succeed, and I'm always willing to walk back decisions if they turn out not to be the right ones.

Plant all the seeds you like, just sometimes we might have to dig a couple up, as much as I'd prefer to let them flourish or wither on their own.

maybe if the gardening DIY thread was expanded to include non-food plants, and then the plant thread in this forum would be about outdoor plants, and then indoor plants go in the... the landscaping thread? Sure, indoor landscaping. Homescaping.

I wish the forums worked like good operating systems and we could just have one thread that appears in multiple forums but it's just one thread if you post in it, the rest are symlinks or shortcuts.

Thing about landscaping is that it’s 75% sitting inside with a pen, and 25% heavy machinery, you rock up to your back yard with a mini digger and a vague idea then you are going to have a bad time trust me on this one (my grandad bought his house with the money made from fixing holes that were supposed to be ponds) , so it has far more in common with house building than it does with filling a flower bed.

Yeah I don't see any reason not to have a houseplants/indoor/succulents plants thread in DIY. Lot's of people are very interested in them and they are neat, but they don't really always have a ton in common with flower/fruit/herb/veg gardening. I'm not sure we need to cram everything that's sort of plant related into one big gardening thread, but idk.

Or send the old plants thread back to DIY and make a new 'Talk about trees/wild plants' thread in this forum to really confuse everyone.

I mentioned the multiple forums feeding to one thread thing to JB and apparently it is possible, but might cause some moderation headaches (since the plant threads tend to get super feisty)

The real problem with this dead gay comedy forum: where to chat about plants.

Oh hey now "apparently possible" is not what I said, I said we'd talked about it :) It would still require an as yet unknown amount of programming, but it's always better to solve policy issues first and technical issues last.

If you want a houseplants thread in DIY I don't see a problem with that, or if moving the plants thread out of DIY was a bad idea we can reverse that and reopen the other TGO thread but without the gardening parts of it. I don't mind.
