It's about volume. There was way better stuff in most of the 90's and late 80's (earlier 80's gets a pass for it being too early to boom).

Late 90's is where I think the crash from the golden era started.

There was cool stuff in the 00's of course, but not as much of it as the early/mid 90's.

There was also the weird backpack "real hip hop" detour that produced a lot of self important garbage. I'd submit early 2000s backpacker shows for some of the smelliest shows of all time. At least El-P and ultimately RTJ came out of all that.

A bunch of dudes who took away that Native Tongues type stuff was good because of dignity, art, and conscious topics. But unfortunately forgot the important "fun" element.

as far as volume goes, there are more rappers right now than any time in history, and probably more good ones too if you took a little time and effort to find them.

The worst part is that they just couldn't even keep it to themselves. It would be like one guy in jizzy sweatpants with one long fingernail who smells like beef and can't contain himself at a house party where we are playing Ludacris.

Then:

The Ripper, the master, the overlordian'
Playing MC's like a old accordion
I get the inspiration from unnecessary station
Them sayin I was vacationin'
You can't quote with your weaker throat
Tryin to sneak a peek at how I freak the notes
Major MC's become minor B-flats
So retire the mic, get your chains and your bats
Here's your chance to advance, get in your stance
I shoot the holster off your cowboy pants
Pure entertainment, tonight's your arraignment
You're guilty - face down on the pavement
No holds barred, it's time to get scarred
You and your squad better praise the real God
The undertaker, droppin' thunder on fakers
When it comes to lyrics I'm as freaky as Seka
So lay the mic down slow and careful
Cause mine is fully loaded and I got another handful
A clip to slip in and start rippin'
Divin' and dippin' and givin punks a whippin'
Just in case you wanna go a few rounds or so
I'm down so that you clowns'll know
Me gettin burnt or hurt won't be tolerated
I got rhymes up the huh forget it I'm constipated

Now:

*hi hat ticks incessantly*
*idiot slurs three word phrase for 4 1/2 minutes*

Soundcloud rappers and mumble core is good! The youth of today recognize that anything adults ever told them about decorum and self-respect is a bullshit falsehood used by boomers and Millenaials to perpetuate the power structures and paradigms in our culture. By tatting up their faces and specifically highlighting prescription drug use over illegal drug use, they promote the complete destruction of typical class norms in favor of Lo-Fi vibes and freaky sex. There is literally nothing more interesting happening in US music today that SoundCloud mumble rappers (unless you count the Nu-School emo rappers from the Midwest who are killing it)

All rap from before 1994 is too corny to listen to now unironically. It’s like being into Rock music and listening to big bandstand music from the 50s.

Anyway, yes I love Jerry Minor too, but

2) I didn't remember his name and I didn't want to be like "hey, where are Horatio Sanz and that other guy?"
