Soundcloud rappers and mumble core is good! The youth of today recognize that anything adults ever told them about decorum and self-respect is a bullshit falsehood used by boomers and Millenaials to perpetuate the power structures and paradigms in our culture. By tatting up their faces and specifically highlighting prescription drug use over illegal drug use, they promote the complete destruction of typical class norms in favor of Lo-Fi vibes and freaky sex. There is literally nothing more interesting happening in US music today that SoundCloud mumble rappers (unless you count the Nu-School emo rappers from the Midwest who are killing it)

All rap from before 1994 is too corny to listen to now unironically. It’s like being into Rock music and listening to big bandstand music from the 50s.

Look, im gonna give the dead kid a listen. But the rest of whatever youre getting at about class conflict is hot nonsense.

Im pro self respect btw, it beats suiciding on benzos. gently caress that.

Are there people out there who actually listen to music ironically? That's weird.

Also, I keep trying to think of rap songs I genuinely love from before 1994, but I literally can't. My knowledge of rap music pretty much starts at the Mind of Mystikal re-release in 1995. You might be onto something there.

edit: actually my knowledge of rap begins with Spice 1's 187 She Wrote, which owns & was released in 1993.

Ironically when Mystikal and those southern rappers started getting big in like 1997 or so is when I stopped enjoying new rap music.

1989-1995 will forever be the golden era. It really started to go downhill when pop garbage like Puffy and Mase got big in 97 and when Juvenile and that godawful "Bling Bling" song came out by the Hot Boyz or whatever the gently caress they were called.

I ain't mad though. I just stay in my little Gravediggaz/Wu-Tang/Onyx/Public Enemy bubble and I'm happy.

I'm all about early-mid '00s crunk, I think because it was the first era of hip hop that I learned about & developed an interest in all by myself.

edit2: speaking of Mystikal getting popular, it still weirds me out that "Danger (Been So Long)" by Mystikal/Nivea is 20 years old. :corsair:

i had a handful of acquaintances who moved from other musical endeavors to the soundcloud rap game about ten years ago

they kind of went from being passionate about music to being passionate about social media marketing, business and Supreme-hat-esque fashion. some work in marketing now, some DJ strip clubs, some claim to "produce" while in reality they promote

i guess it is Jay-Z, Puff Daddy's musical world now where you try to make it as an artist first so you can make it as a business man later

I've told this story before, but DMX lived down here for about 10 years, post-fame. my ex legit lives his music and tried to track him down for her birthday one year. periodically he'd show up in the news when somebody told him they were a fan and he'd (for example) finish mopping the floor of the Waffle House or strip club he was at (both actual examples). he got arrested once a year, with one exception.

my brother taught at the elementary school near the apartments he lived at, and the kids all had stories about him. he's the only one of us who had any interaction with him, albeit oblique... he was checking out at the grocery store, and somebody came in and yelled "FRESHHHHHH TURKEY LEGS" and my brother asked "who's that fool?" and the cashier rolled her eyes and said, "oh, that's just DMX."

he was sort of a goofy local character, so it was easy to forget that he was both an international superstar and a guy who ran dogfights.

anyway, I still enjoy that one song of his. you know the one.

as far as volume goes, there are more rappers right now than any time in history, and probably more good ones too if you took a little time and effort to find them.

Volume of quality, not volume of stuff.
I'm not passing any judgement on 10's and onward rap, which I don't pretend to be knowledgeable about.
I'm talking strictly about comparing the 90's to the 00's.

And again don't get me wrong, lots of cool stuff still came out in the 00's. Some styles were having their heyday as well.

Like if you really love weird creepy underground stuff the 00's were fantastic. The MF Doom/Madlib sort of material was golden.
The early 00's were great for West Coast alt groups at least briefly. People Under the Stairs, Jurassic 5, Blackalicious, Zion I, Del tha Funkee Homosapien's last glut of good material.
And Outkast was ripping poo poo up still. Hell I even like Idlewild.

It was mostly a weak rear end time for hardcore rap. Like NYC went from exploding with amazing hardcore stuff in the 90's to G-Unit and Dipset lol. Thank god Ghostface was still great for awhile at least.
