Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

A. Let's build up a little bit before we challenge the Kookens directly. I'm all for enforcing our borders and kicking out/destroying scout ships, but they had, what, 7 vessels that the AI classified as battlecruisers, plus tons of escorts? Admittedly, those might just be freighters, since we haven't seen them in combat, but why risk years of shipbuilding on making the war hot? As far as we know, we have more planets than they do (the one we found is either their homeworld or we're doomed), so we should be able to outgrow them if we can hold on long enough.

One reason we should poke them at least a little bit is because knowing their approximate capabilities will greatly help a buildup. What tonnage do they have, how fast do the big ones go, are they actually primarily beams or did they just not waste missiles on shooting the parked ships, what are their ranges like, etc... Aurora combat is very swingy and we don't want to spend a lot of effort on building ships that turn out to be not capable of doing anything.

Shooting everything that moves is enforcing our borders? Nowhere does B say we're going to just point at their homeworld and go full speed ahead until we're dead or out of gas, it says we're going to start blowing up all those scouts that keeping coming into our territory. We've been asking them politely to leave, time to stop being so polite and start enforcing our borders.

Yeah you're trying to paint it like B means throwing our whole fleet into the teeth of their homeworld's defenses, which would obviously be moronic I agree. But it's not, it's shooting the military scouts violating our territory as self-defense, just like I am 100% sure they would do to any scouts we sent to lurk around their colonies. The shooting war already started years ago with the Maler, B is just standing up for our basic territorial sovereignty. The other option is just let them keep spying on us and eventually planting their own colonies unmolested which is even dumber.

Yes, because in the Cold War, America totally just watched while Russia did its thing.

I never said anything about invading them, that's entirely your made-up fantasy story. There's nothing in A about allowing the Kooken to colonize our territory, that is also your made-up fantasy story.

B would mean that, if the Kooks set up a strong fleet on the jump point (which they have done before!) we would charge in, lasers blazing. A would mean not directly challenging their military ships unless those military ships did something more overt than flag-waving.

EDIT: And if this was a shooting war, we would already be on a new game because we'd be dead.

If they drop a large fleet one jump away from Sol, uh, yes of course it's a no brainer that we have to fight? They're making appearances in the outer regions of the Sol system already, we need to tighten up the guard on the JP before the next contact that comes out of nowhere in Sol is a cruiser dropping nukes on Europa or something instead of a scout. And the AI planting colonies in territory you don't chase them out of is just what the AI does, that's not made up at all.

Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

If they transition a large fleet onto the jump point and sit on it passively, like they did last time, it would be risking suicide to charge at them. I'm not advocating that we let them glass our worlds or advance an actual fleet to Sol, just that we don't go off half-cocked because two ships just rolled off the assembly line. Also, the Bomb Trucks are not ideal as pickets because they only have a 3 month deployment time.

If I were driving I would:

For ships in our systems
- Paint them with an active to get tonnage and threaten them
- Lob a couple shots into each class the first time it was seen to check for armor 1 (probably commercial)
- Demand they leave and destroy ships that don't reverse

Separately, have a probing raid:
- Send a Gadget and Kobold into Voss
- Switch on the Gadget's active look for something militaryish that's close enough for the Kobold to get out-and-back to the jump point
- Shoot off a salvo at 25mkm & start withdrawing after it impacts
- See if they return missile fire, what the point defense hit rate looks like, and how quickly any chasing ships move

Should they post up a big 10 capital Ship fleet like last time, I won't engage unless absolutely necessary, I will try my best to ping them though. Deep in the recesses of the High Command there was a gathering of only the most important leaders, they had been called there to discuss in secret a most delicate and important matter. The sole point of discussion was what to do about the ever-increasing boldness of the Kooken Pleasure Pit Protectorate. Recent years had seen a proliferation of Kooken vessels exploring Terran claimed space. While the Union of Terra’s navy was not yet able to withstand a serious engagement with KPPP vessels, the High Command had determined the two capital ships in production would significantly level the playing field. It was determined that once completed, Kooken incursions were to no longer be tolerated. A serious fleet action was to be avoided at all costs though, and only fought on favorable terms. These new ships were a precious resource, and were not to be committed to battle thoughtlessly.

The era in which the Union of Terra would be forced to endure humiliation after humiliation at the hands of rival empires was to end.

I think I might have forgot to mention I put a deep space listening post on the colonizable planet in Adrantis, as well as having dispatched a Xenoarchaeology team there.

January 1st, 2116

I begin the year by updating the Bomb Truck to include just enough MSPs to repair an engine failure.

These complete their refits in days, and I then order a second batch of the updated Bomb Truck corvettes.

February 6th, 2116

We spot a Kooken Attack class cruising though Accatran. I’m going to dispatch a ship to paint it and chase it out. I’m not shooting it down yet as we have no capital ships built.

They are quickly chased out of the system within 24hrs.

March 21st, 2116

The battlecruiser were not the only major undertaking the navy was currently undertaking. The Admiralty complex on Earth had been under heavy renovation and upgrading. The command and control center had received many new systems. A Fleet commander could now effectively direct actions not only in Sol, but also the neighboring systems. This would greatly expand the operational capacity of the fleet.

We can now project our fleet bonuses into the next system.

March 29th, 2116

An Apollo Class is sighted closing in on the inner core of Sol. A warning is issued, and ships are dispatched to paint it and chase it away.

We also completed research into longer ranged lasers. I set about researching new weapon components.

April 2nd, 2116

While chasing out the Apollo we pick up another Kooken vessel, this time an Attack class. Pursued by our ships, both vessels quickly flee to the jump point and exit the system.

June 20th, 2116

Another victim of our excellent pension program. Are we giving everyone a vineyard after like ten years of service?

July 19th, 2116

And another one…

July 22nd, 2116

In preparation for upcoming conflicts I am producing the Big Pig Support Vessel, as well as a slightly modified version of the Vulture Salvage. I begin retooling our smaller commercial yard for the Big Pig, while the Vulture will be made by industry.

August 16th, 2116

Our new lasers are completed, once the battlecruisers are completed I’ll be immediately refitting them with these. This will allow them to fire out to 120,000 kilometers, something the future proofed fire control can handle.

August 27th, 2116

The end of August saw the much anticipated launch of the Pride of Zurai, an Avalanche class battlecruiser. The vessel made a ceremonial trip around Earth under, an event rife with fanfare that was broadcast across the Union. Upon return to the naval shipyards she was immediately put back under work to upgrade the vessels armament. Without a doubt the spirits of humans everywhere had been stirred by this truly massive achievement.

The vessel was also causing a stir in naval strategy and tactics circles; the vessels speed had exceeded even Admiral Polatkan’s demanding expectations. It was to be argued that such a truly revolutionary vessel had in effect rendered much of the existing fleet obsolete. Its speed was easily twice that of many of the navy’s combat ships, and on par with the current fighters. While not ever ship need keep pace with a battlecruiser, it was argued that fast attack craft and fighters should be capable of outrunning it. Without a doubt, many more vessels would need to be designed and commissioned.

I immediately put this ship into refitting to replace its battery with the new upgraded guns. This won’t take long and will significantly improve the battlecruisers firepower without any loss of speed or rate of fire.

September 13th, 2116

Overshadowed by the launch of the battlecruiser, two weeks later the Army unveils four fully trained and operational lances of Dragoon Class Mechs. In demonstrations these armored vehicles are shown to be able to traverse a variety of terrain quickly and effectively, while simultaneous outputting a ferocious amount of autocannon fire. While useful in defense, these are clearly offensive weapons meant to overpower and breakthrough the enemy lines.

I dispatch a pair of lances to Makho’s Folly, which is rapidly becoming an military base with a population.

October 8th, 2116

The Pride of Zurai finishes its refit. I lay down another battlecruiser, we won’t see this one until the last year of the decade, but that should be fine.

November 3rd, 2116

The second squadron of Bomb Trucks are completed.

Our fuel situation is much better now, we have 18 million liters spare at Earth, plus millions more in tankers.

December 12th, 2116

We improve our reactor technology, and begin working on improved capacitors. These will allow us to charge our weapons faster, which increases rate of fire.

January 1st, 2117

After traversing an unexplored jump point in the Caliban system, Commander El Spamo finds his ships advanced sensors giving back the readings not of a new previously unknown system, but one the officer is intimately knowledgeable of. El Spamo had once more traversed a jump point leading into the Voss system. Panic sets in of the bridge as officers whisper among themselves about the fate of the Maler. El Spamo quickly sets about reassuring the crew, and orders a course plotted back through the jump point. Once the Admiralty was informed of this El Spamo is ordered back to Earth for shore leave and debriefing. Perpetually a victim of circumstance, El Spamo knew this latest spat of bad luck would be dreadful for any hope of further advancement within the navy.

El Spamo travels through an unexplored jump point and instead of discovering a new system, a new connection to Voss is revealed. Who knows if this is good for us? This could run the Kookens into the Theocracy at least. I’m beginning to feel we may need a moratorium on exploration, it’s been years since anything good has come from going through jump points.

January 8th, 2117

Our scrapper is completed, now we just need something to scrap. We begin to produce another academy; this will double the number officers and crew we gain each year. Many of our ships are without qualified officers, and the vast majority of our regiments are without an officer.

We also researched increased shield regeneration, I set the freed labs to start researching Gamma shields.

February 11th, 2117

The second Avalanche is launched, I immediately begin to refit it with the newer lasers.

March 9th, 2117

Another officer lured away from duty by the promise of leisure.

Less than a week later our refitted Avalanche is completed, should the Kookens show back up we will be producing some scrap.

March 24th, 2117

After months of “shore leave” on Earth, Commander El Spamo was informed that an early retirement package had been recommended by the High Command. While dressed up as a reward for a storied and accomplished career, the Commander knew this was a political burial, to be shuffled away so as not to remind the navy of a series of disappointments outside of El Spamo’s control. Perhaps some future conflict would force the navy to see the error of their ways…

El Spamo retires. If you want back in let me know, I've got some ideas...

Our civilian shipyard retools, and I begin producing a pair of Big Pig Supply Ships.

June 30th, 2117

Flamester and Iceblocks retire.

September 27th, 2117

Our terraforming rate is mildly increased, this will come in handy once we have the industrial capacity to spare. With how hemmed in we are now we will need to improve the worlds we do have. We really should get on this. I feel like I'm always just putting out fires.

October 12th, 2117

After years of fruitless excavations, the xeno-archaeology teams on Europa found a small series of interconnected intact underground bunkers below the devastated ruins of the alien outpost on the surface. The team was convinced that with the help of some engineers they could excavate and recover whatever was sealed inside those bunkers. Deeper still they have detected a faint energy signature, though discovering what was causing it would take more time.

Eight abandoned installations are not very much, lets hope we get some new tech out of these.

November 14th, 2117

The first chamber excavated seems to have been a massive burial chamber, a grand sarcophagus is located centrally, surrounded by untold riches of previously unknown metal alloys and artifacts. Cataloged and then shipped back to Earth, the metal alloy alone was worth more than the entire Union’s treasury. While the artifacts were to be displayed, the metals were immediately injected into the beleaguered civilian industrial processes, providing a near instant economic boost.

Athaboros retires from the navy, while Innocent Bystanders gets a promotion.

We discover a cache of wealth on Europa, while not amazing, this more than doubles our current wealth. We had been running up quite a deficit lately, so this really alleviates the pressure.

The next month we discover a functional research lab. I leave it on Europa in anticipation of the dormant construct needing labs to use its research bonus.

January 17th, 2118

Another retirement, these are becoming a monthly occurrence.

This month we discover some functional low gravity infrastructure.

Next month we discover 5.6 million liters of fuel. The month after that we discover an automated mine, followed next by a fighter factory. I ship the factory back to Earth.

May 5th, 2118

Finally we get something worthwhile, nothing amazing, but still it is tech we don’t currently have.

June 18th, 2118

MuteAllison really does want the easy life it seems.

We have completely explored the ruins on Europa, though we still have dormant construct to find. Honestly, this was a pretty disappointing haul, the research lab is probably the most valuable find. The single ECCM-1 component will net us a bit of a boost to electronic warfare research, but nothing substantial.

July 23rd, 2118

The complete lack of Kooken naval activity in the past year led the Admiralty to determine it was time to begin monitoring the Voss-Accatran jump point, often referred to as “Jump Point Charlie”. The assignment was not one anyone was eager to undertake, several crew from the original station did volunteer. Once in position morale was understandably low, as the wreckage of the previous station was still scattered within sensor range.

Last month I had realized I had produced a spare jump point listening post, so I tug it into place at the Voss-Accatran jump point.

August 22nd, 2118

We complete research into larger lasers. I immediately create and begin researching a new component.

September 25th, 2118

Even more research is completed. Increasing our research rate is going to pay dividends. The increase in fire control speed was very necessary, especially for the sake of miniaturizing fire controls for our next generation of likely very fast FACs.

November 24th, 2118

So much logistics… I’ve got an explorer that ran out of fuel, and the Accatran fuel harvesters are nearly full.

Sad King Billy retires.

We complete research into the new 15cm laser components, these weapons could theoretically be more advanced than what we’ve seen on Kooken vessels thus far. Of course they have likely also advanced since they last fired on us.

December 31st, 2118

No Kooken vessels since April 2116, they may actually have got the message.

I disassemble the ECCM-1 we found for a terribly measly 100RP. The ruins on Europa turned out to be a real dud.

Our fuel situation is nominally solved, we have 36 million litres, and most of our tankers are full. Our industry is expanding, but not very quickly. We keep having to divert industry to produce stations, refineries, or maintenance facilities.

February 8th, 2119

A pair of support ships are launched. These will help immensely with our logistics, as well as giving our fleet a far greater operational capacity.

March 7th, 2119

Telsa Cola is moved off of active duty. We also complete work on the last battlecruiser, we now have three of these powerful vessels. We really need the expansion of our academy, we have less than 200 spare crew members.

I also restart MSP production, expect this to crater our economy.

April 26th, 2119

We complete research into capacitors capable of charging weapons with three power per 5 seconds tick. I set about researching new weapons, but also divert some labs to improving our industry.

July 20th, 2119

We complete the military academy, which will double the number of crew recruited, as well as officers. We also complete research into a 10cm laser capable of firing every 5 second tick.

December 31st, 2119

The rest of the year goes uneventfully.

The end of the year finds us surprisingly at peace. The Kookens have never responded to any of my communications, but it seems they may have finally gotten the message when I chased out the last batch of Kooken vessels. While a Kooken wreak would be a great prize, the integrity of our borders is also good.

Here is the galaxy as we know it.

The unexpected peace has allowed the Union of Terra to make rapid technological increases. Much of those breakthroughs have come in the area of weapons and defensive systems though, those who hoped to see large increases in the development of Terran industry or colonies were left wanting. Though certainly the last few years were not without advances in these areas, Freeshire now boasts a fledgling industrial base, along with the capacity to service and maintain a corvette or strike group in orbit. The civilian sector has seen a mass proliferation of space-faring companies, as well as mining operations.

The Colonial Office is pressuring the High Command hard for a major increase in resources, of which they have been in essence starved of. Only in the last year had colony and freighter shipping resumed full operationality, owing to the fuel situation. Furthermore, they are down two exploration vessels due to losses. As well as those currently employed beginning to show their age. They desired the High Command to authorize the production of a new exploration vessel, one capable of defending itself.

Meanwhile, the navy had been undergoing a massive audit of their fighting vessels. This has revealed a great many ships are hopelessly out of date, requiring either massive refits, or outright replacement. The venerable Gladius FACs are now just over twenty years old, as are the Zeus and Artemis class vessels.

Sorry for how slow this went up, aforementioned real life stuff. It was also a really big update. To my disappointment the Kookens seem to actually be respecting us, most likely due to how much tonnage we’ve produced in this decade. We could always bait them into our space and shoot them down...

The time has come for our policy vote for the next decade, which will then also inform some shipbuilding.

+++++++++++++ Policy Vote for the 2120s +++++++++++++

Industrial Focus

A. Exo-operation – Continue to pursue industrial production that can be utilized in off-world mining and colonization efforts. Infrastructure will be mass-produced, mass-drivers made and deployed alongside automated mines. Terraforming Stations will at last be produced and tugged into place. We will design a new high capacity colony ship to vastly increase colony growth.
B. Expand the Fleet – Pour even more resources into increasing military dockyards and maintenance facilities. Listening posts will also be produced and dispersed in the outer reaches of the solar system. Many more capital ships will be designed and produced. Makho’s Folly should receive some maintenance facilities once the population can support it.
C. Modernize the Army – The Dragoon class mechs are just the beginning, new mechs will be created. A new fully capable army will be designed, one that can effectively fight both offensively and defensively. More recruitment centers will be made, and some will be sent to our colonies.

Off World Colonies

A. Expansion – Continue to aggressively create new colonies, Adrantis will be quickly colonized to legitimize our claim to it. Our limited resources will be put into expanding the number of colonies we possess.
B. Improvement – We must make our current colonies larger and more functional. We need to develop their native industries, or at least get them exporting vital TN minerals. Freeshire should become self sufficient and be able to host a fleet.

Exploration – Recent years have seen exploration continually cause us problem, should we continue?

A. To Boldly Go – We cannot allow our series of disappointments and reversals to stymie our efforts. We must double our efforts. We will continue to aggressively explore the galaxy. The commissioning of exploration cruisers is to be considered, no longer will our explorers fall prey so easily to hostile aliens.
B. Isolationism – Exploration has only brought us new foes, we should cease all exploration and focus on the situation in front of us. Let’s not make this any worse than it already is.
C. Balanced Approach – Continue to explore slowly with the craft available to us. We will avoid taking exploration vessels past Juno Bug space.

The Fleet - The Gladius, Zeus, and Artemis class vessels are all 20 years old, what should be done about them?

A. Scrap and replace – The Gladius, Zeus, and Artemis class vessels are beyond a simple refit, they should be decommissioned and replaced. First to be replaced will be the Gladius, a new FAC strike group will be commissioned.
B. Refit – With some smart refits we can squeeze another decade of life from these ships, they may not be ideal, but at least they function. An economical refit won’t produce the best vessels, but it will be far cheaper than commissioning brand new ships. The FACs will still likely need simple replacement.
C. As is – Continue to use these vessels as is. This is by far the most economical options, but these vessels cannot be expected to last five minutes in a proper engagement.

Tech Focus – what should be the focus of a major technological push?

A. Weapons – We will focus a large portion of our research labs to advancing our energy weapon tech, along with missile and PD tech.
B. Industrial Capacity – We will research tech that increases our construction, mining, shipyard maintenance, and fuel refining.
C. Propulsion – We will focus on creating faster and more efficient engines.
D. Sensors – We will focus on increasing the power of our shipboard and planetary sensors.
E. Defenses – We will focus on researching shields and armor.

+++++++++++++ End of Policy Vote +++++++++++++

4. B No need to let good ships go to waste, just slap a fresh coat of paint on there and they'll be fine.

5. B The better our core infrastructure, the more quickly we can produce everything else, by my understanding. So, this seems like the best long-term solution for making the most ships with which to kill our adversaries.

Figures that military brass gets to retire before their 40's while I'll still be stuck mopping up grease stains (if I'm lucky!) in the hangars in my late 60's.

Off World Colonies

A. Expansion – Continue to aggressively create new colonies, Adrantis will be quickly colonized to legitimize our claim to it. Our limited resources will be put into expanding the number of colonies we possess.

Exploration – Recent years have seen exploration continually cause us problem, should we continue?

C. Balanced Approach – Continue to explore slowly with the craft available to us. We will avoid taking exploration vessels past Juno Bug space.

The Fleet - The Gladius, Zeus, and Artemis class vessels are all 20 years old, what should be done about them?

B. Refit – With some smart refits we can squeeze another decade of life from these ships, they may not be ideal, but at least they function. An economical refit won’t produce the best vessels, but it will be far cheaper than commissioning brand new ships. The FACs will still likely need simple replacement.

Tech Focus – what should be the focus of a major technological push?

B. Industrial Capacity – We will research tech that increases our construction, mining, shipyard maintenance, and fuel refining.

Spewing insults, pissing off all your neighbors, betraying your allies, backing out of treaties and accords, and generally screwing over the global environment?
ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!

It feels like we're militarily able to compete and protect ourselves now, so it seems like a good time to expand our industrial base so we can outpace our neighbours.

Also, what can we expect, mechanically, from this un-found construct on Europa? Like is it liable to be more of the same as the ruins, or is it potentially a Sajuuk-class derelict craft that can lay waste to our enemies?

We need to focus on building up our economy, so we can have more ships and armies later

We should colonize Adrantis first, followed by Esteban and Olympia. This will give us a nice little bubble of territory. Nearpoint and Tarantis must be kept off-limits to colonization for the time being.

I disagree with the premise of this question. If our explorers had not found the Kookens or the Bugs it would not have stopped them from finding us eventually. That being said we should focus on locating and exploring jump points closer to home.

A. Scrap and replace – The Gladius, Zeus, and Artemis class vessels are beyond a simple refit, they should be decommissioned and replaced. First to be replaced will be the Gladius, a new FAC strike group will be commissioned.

It is with a heavy heart that I call for the replacement of my first command, but we need faster and better armed ships if we are to defend ourselves

C. Propulsion – We will focus on creating faster and more efficient engines.

It is foolish to only have the fast Battle cruisers while the rest of the fleet lags behind. Better engines will allow us choose where and when we fight.
