The path to citizenship other than marriage involves being a resident for a while. It also requires revoking your existing citizenship which is a whole thing and cannot be reversed. I like it here and want to stay here for the rest of my life but I don't really like Tokyo. I'm single and want to live in the city so I doubt I'll ever buy a house. Any house here is pretty much guaranteed to lose value. If you've been looking at those cheap old Japanese house blogs on Instagram or whatever almost all of those listings are in the middle of butt gently caress nowhere, will probably only be accessible by car, and probably require a lot of fixing up. If that's something you're into, that's fine, but a lot of times people think those are in a population center and not halfway up a mountain an hour or more drive from the nearest city and have been abandoned for a long time. |

I'll also say, there's going to be a lot of cultural and language barriers if you don't know Japan already. And like, that's not insurmountable, but I know some people aren't as prepared for that as they probably should be. Another option for a foot in the door is Japanese language school but the most common is definitely teaching English. The pay and hours aren't very good most of the time, especially at first. If you have a graduate degree I think you can teach English at university. The pay is better and so are the hours but I'm only remembering this information second hand. Up until recently I worked in craft beer. I can speak Japanese conversationally, but I'm not very good at reading and writing, and I do have some shortcomings there. If you have a skill similar to that, that could help, but again it's not really a guarantee. Basically, you need to have something that is a niche that you can exploit that would allow an employer to support a visa. Basically, they need to show that they can't just hire any Japanese citizen to fill the role. Unless you can speak fluently that's also a major barrier. The other major one is doing business and or translation stuff That's going to require having the highest or second highest level of the Japanese language proficiency tests. So this is why most foreigners here teach English. They can argue they need someone who speaks English fluently, and has a native understanding. I'm lounging after doing some stuff today. had to do yard after fixing whatever was wrong with my mk1 install. got both done and gonna have fun with this whisky and spicy ramen. Got 2x spicy, jalap sausage, and pepperjack... bonus sauces from a local place that has good stuff. Probably going to be trashin on the spicy more than anything.

 this is my favorite ramen. lately I get the maruchan or nissin bitch baby level spicy chicken noodle bowls and add shelled frozen edamame, it feels more uhhhh empowering. we made some poutine and it was p good, needs more curds. I can't get em locally
