Since we're stuck at home with COVID home-preschooling, I'm trying to get my toddlers outside in the yard as much as possible. After a positive reaction to some Pokemon ROM game-play, I had the idea to give my 4yo daughter an old cell phone to take pictures of plants and bugs with, and make a sort of scrapbook. I also discovered an app called Seek that will use some kind of machine learning to identify organisms with your camera with upwards of 50% accuracy. Daughter is already a pro backyardsman who catches fireflies and yells at me for bothering frogs. I'd love to hear if anybody has any stories to share about little kids outdoors, advice about bug-catching or other backyard activities, or any other sources of inspiration to distract my kids on our island in the sea of existential dread.

You could get some cheapo binoculars and help her look at birds, they have more interesting behaviour than most other easy to see critters, and you can get a feeder to make sure there are some around.
