I got a pair of mini binoculars - Leica 10x25 - and would really recommend minis if you get outside regularly and want to make looking at birds (and other cool things) part of your regular routine. I always used to have the feeling that I needed to be doing some kind of Official Outdoor Activity to take the regular binoculars along, so I didn't bring them with me all that often unless I was specifically going out to look for birds or going on a hike etc. They are tiny and light and fit in my pocket, so it's no big deal to carry them whenever I'm walking the dog or just pottering about. I've had a lot of fun even just being able to watch local birds going about their business in the area beyond what I see of them at backyard feeders.

Is there an image in the post that isn't showing up anymore? Is it a ghost bird?

As someone not living in the US, watching backyard birds from Ohio is pretty neat, very different to my own backyard bird buds https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtGUTs_HgcE

dupersaurus posted:(one of) My quarantine projects has been setting up a raspberry pi-powered bird feeder cam. I've gotten it to the point where it's only taking empty pictures of the swinging feeder 50% of the time, and now I'm trying to get some machine learning going to reduce those false-positives.

Bloody posted:The neighborhood crow fledglings are starting to show themselves I love watching gangly crow fledglings beg their parents for food the same way and with the same body language as the tiny sparrow fledglings are, just much larger and louder. It always cracks me up that fledglings will stand on top of a feeding table and shriek wildly at their parents for food even though it's right there in front of them and would be less effort for them to get it themselves.
