Part 2: We Happy Few

Aww. Who’s this?
Oh, Fleet Admiral? He was my pet way back in Academy. Hah, maybe I can get another dog just like him once all of this is over.
You should!

A-ah, and this is ...
Maray, my sister.
...
She could be annoying as hell, and honestly, she talked way too much, but ...
I'm so sorry.
It's all right.

I can't ruminate on the past forever. Eventually, it breaks you down. Makes you a hollow shell. Makes you blind to the treasures around you.

Getting comfortable on the eve of the final battle, captain?
A-Ava!? W-when'd you get here!

Ha. You thought you could get away with this sort of thing just because your military’s entire personnel department was blown up?

C-commander! I-I …

I was merely double checking that you were giving the battle plans due diligence. But clearly, you are distracted.
Hah-hahahaha ... I-I have no idea what you could be alluding to …

Chief, you have work to do as well, do you not?
Y-yes commander ... Eh-heh …

What!? Can't you give it a break, Ava? We're going into battle. THE battle. Give the poor girl her night.

Make sure you straighten out your uniform before heading out again.

(I know that was unnecessary. He's undoubtedly got the battle plans memorized and has devised multiple improvements by now.)

(Then why did I interrupt that? The prototypes know our hearts and minds. We're paranoid, selfish creatures. Controlled by nothing more than fear. Jealousy. Hatred. They seek to turn us against each other. Question the bonds which make us strong. I know Chigara has no evil plan to sabotage our efforts. No hidden agenda. No poisoned dagger hidden behind her back. No. The Prototypes put her here to divide us. To breed fear of betrayal. I only realized it when I saw them together… Heh. Sentimentality will prove our undoing.)

*ALARM*

Battle stations! Battle stations! All hands, set condition one throughout the ship. This is not a drill, repeat: this is not a drill. Captain and XO to the bridge immediately!

What's the situation.
The PACT line of battle has gone to full thrust towards the Combined Fleet.
They're attacking first before we can make our move, trying to take the initiative. Bold of them. Show me the tactical situation.

The PACT loyalist fleet, designated Force Red, is composed of older battleships and carriers. Despite that, they are over two hundred vessels strong.

Meanwhile a PACT reserve fleet composed of assault carriers holds position behind the moon. This fleet is designated Force Yellow.

Alliance Intelligence believes Arcadius will bring in Force Yellow to reinforce them after the initial assault. However, the commanding officers of Force Yellow have secretly pledged their allegiance to Veniczar Fontana and will hold position behind the moon until Arcadius' forces have either surrendered or been destroyed.
Hmm … The Alliance has always been gungho about cannons, eh ...
Captain?
Those PACT battleships and carriers are going to get shredded by the Alliance battleship’s rail guns up close. Their best chance would be to engage the Alliance fleet with lasers at long range while under the cover of their own shields. How's the Alliance fleet handling their own shield barrier?

The Testudo-class shield cruiser. As you know, shields have generally been lacking on Alliance ships. To compensate, these specially designed cruisers disperse enormous amounts of shielding over a large area to protect the entire fleet from laser attacks.
But if all our shields are generated by cruisers, a fleet of smaller craft … Relay a message to Admiral Grey. Tell him he needs to prepare for anti-ryder combat.
Aye, captain. Relaying message.

Brave pilots of the crimson fleet. Hear my voice. You are the last vanguard against the imperialists' advance. We are surrounded. Outnumbered. Outgunned. Many will lose their lives today, but take heart. You are not alone. Though our blood may coat our ships, know that it will protect our families! Our freedoms! Let the rich men in their ivory towers hear our roar! We are the People's Alliance! All ryders, FORWARD!

(Foolish humans. Let the carnage begin.)

Looks like your assessment was correct, captain. PACT ryders incoming. Sensors are having difficulty getting exact figures, but … there appear to be hundreds of them.
Form a defensive line in front of the shield cruisers! The prototypes intend to sacrifice all their ryders to take them out. Without their protection the fleet will be vulnerable to laser fire well before the battleships can can get close enough to use their rail guns.
They’re insane... Their casualties will be brutal!
I know. I’m beginning to wonder if Arcadius intends to take PACT down with her.

It's not like PACT has anything to gain by holding back. Especially if they think there's some giant threat coming to kill everyone. A chance at victory is better than certain death. Granted the main cast doesn't know of the ebon fleet, whatever that is, and they're going to protagonist themselves into victory over it anyway. Probably. :v:

To clarify, PACT doesn't know anything about this "Ebon Fleet" whatever. That's why the Prototypes are manipulating things, but your average PACT officer is in it for the ideology/to serve their nation.

There's a lot of dumb/bad stuff in the story, but one thing I really do appreciate is that for the most part everyone is acting in what they think are the best interests of humanity/their people. The Prototype's approach is just utterly misguided, and the one who assumed the role of Arcadius appears to be going rogue.

e: also there's this "Wanderer" who seems to be a total wild card.

Wait -- I haven't even voted in this game yet!

Soooo.... aside from "anime", why was Chigara sitting in the Captain's lap? Did I miss the romance plot heating up? At least here on Earth, ladies don't generally sit on a man's lap when they're alone unless they're very intimate. Not necessarily sleeping together, but certainly headed that way in a hurry. It just seems like a big escalation from "talking informally" to "sitting in his lap talking about his family".

Part 3: The Second Battle of Cera

The PACT ryders close in, intending to take out the Alliance shield cruisers, leaving the fleet vulnerable to laser attacks.

Said shield cruisers don’t have any offensive weapons or abilities, just a large shield bubble.

The PACT ryders are also out ahead of their own shield coverage.

The support ryders hanging back are our number one target, however. Some long-range rocketry takes one out.

The casualties among the PACT ryders is just as brutal as predicted.

We didn’t get nearly all of the support ryders, however. See those red down arrows on some of our units? That’s them turning our flak off. The torpedoes and rockets follow. Kryska’s got her draw fire ability active, fortunately, and she can handle a few torpedoes exploding in her face.

The Sutherland is in the extremely unenviable position of being nose-to-nose with a squadron of PACT fast cruisers.

They are screened by two Alliance infantry ryders, lighter versions of Kryska’s Paladin.

I’m sure they can handle things. Right now I want that support ryder all the way across the map to be dead.

Fast cruisers don’t have a lot of armor so between the carrier, the infantry ryders, and Sola, a few go down. The infantry buy time for the carrier to escape to the relative safety of the Sunrider and Paladin’s guns.

One of them makes the ultimate sacrifice.

Another PACT task force of frigates, destroyers, and cruisers arrive. Those torpedo destroyers combined with the remaining support ryder’s anti-flak ability presents some real danger. Remember, their torpedos have splash damage.

However, now ours do too. I bought an upgrade.

gently caress this support ryder as well. There’s an upgrade (the most expensive in the game) that gives the vanguard cannon splash damage as well. I want.

The last Alliance ryder goes down, but they served their purpose; the carrier has made a clean getaway. With not one but two units capable of repairing ryders, now would have been an excellent time to pop Asaga’s and Sola’s Awaken ability. But I forgot.

Just when I think I’ve swatted them all, they send in more.

While I’ve been massacering their ryders, the PACT capital ships have closed to kinetic range.

This is exactly what I didn’t want to happen!

But two can play at that game.

They can put more torpedoes in space than I can, however. The Arcadius units are also trying to close into melee range. Icari can handle them, though. She’s just been acting as an anti-missile unit all battle so it’s time to put her main skill to use.

It’s such a target-rich environment I have no issue saving up enough command points for a third vanguard shot.

And with their entire ryder screen down, the rest is just mopping up.

There're so many of them we don't even have to aim!
Hiyah! Take this!
We have a battleship on an intercept vector!

Chigara, prepare ECM! Black Jack, cover her!

Understood, captain!

… all right!
Watch out Liberty, you've got an Arcadius unit to your six!
I don’t have a clear shot! Liberty, take evasive maneuvers!

Hi-EEAAHH!!!
Liberty has taken a direct hit!
Come in, Chigara! What's your status?
T-the shoulder maneuvering valve has fractured! I'm venting plasma on one side and can’t stop spinning! C-currently, revolving at a rate of 30 RPM!
Captain, if the Liberty cannot regain control, she'll fall straight into the battleship's path!
50 RPM!
Claude, can you stop the Liberty!?

I-I'm a doctor, not a--
Nobody cares, you idiot!
I-I'm on it!
E-eighty RPM!
Icari, speed up and see if you can catch her!
Copy!
Starting to … lose … inertial dampeners ...
No joy, captain! It's spinning too fast! We're both gonna be in pieces if I grab the Liberty!
Claude!
I-I'm sorry, captain!
Phoenix and Bianca, clear the area.

Sola?

The defective valve has been destroyed.
Bianca, retrieve the Liberty!
U-understood!

Captain, our munitions are down to 20 percent.
I was thinking the same. Full reverse! Pull back away from the fighting and let our escorts take care of the battleship! We'll rejoin this fight after we've resupplied.

The battle has barely begun, but I feel like we've shot off a moon's weight in munitions.

Forgive me, I did not mean ...

Later that evening …

(I guess ... I can't keep them apart forever. Nor should I. I won't stand in their way any more.)

Lieutenant! Get on the comm with whoever is running the Alliance’s logistics. Twenty minutes in unacceptable, I want that collier here in ten!

Elsewhere …

Hi.

The next morning …

Good morning, captain. Munitions have been fully restocked, and all sections report green. The Sunrider is fully combat effective.
And Cera?

The battle for Cera has raged all night with inconclusive results. Today will likely be the decisive moment of this war. The prototypes' ships are damaged and low on supplies. They expect their second fleet to relieve them so they can retreat to their orbital stations and rearm for another round.
But the catch is that the second fleet is secretly on our side, right?
Correct. Without backup, the prototype's fleet will be unable to prosecute the battle and forced to withdraw to PACT’s pre-war border.
Well then, let's hope Fontana keeps his end of the bargain. Take us to condition two, commander. Hit the engines and get us back into the fight!
Aye, captain.

Meanwhile, in the hanger …

Hey! Claude said you left sickbay last night. You were with him, weren’t you!
What? What’s the matter with you?
Tell me!
Okay, yes. We … spent the night together.

I swear ... If you betray him, I will kill you and all your sisters without a second thought.
What are you talking about!? YOU’RE the real suspicious one! Always brooding in the shadows … honestly, you've been changing ever since you first awakened at Far Port! How do I know that YOU won’t betray US!?
WHAT!?

If you betray the captain, I’ll be the one coming for YOU.

To be honest I'm finding myself re-writing a lot more in the middle part of this second (third?) game than I did previously. Whoever the ESL writer was isn't back, or they got a much better editor, so that's not the problem. What is a problem is that the person or people who wrote this section of the game were really into the whole "intentionally write English as if it's been translated from Japanese" thing that I absolutely despise. That and there's been more and more of the third-person narration, which I've discussed before. Also sometimes I'll rewrite stuff around minor no-name characters that I don't feel bothered to make a portrait for.

I still like the overall story, though, possibly because, again, I have low standards/bad taste. But I really do think that the setting feels fleshed out and lived in. I like that there's stuff happening now that totally makes sense after you get the whole story (NO SPOILERS). I like that Fontana suing for peace and making a power play totally makes sense and that PACT isn't a Big Bad Evil Empire after all. PACT itself is a pretty realistic depiction of a post-revolutionary state IMO, which I am all here for. As I've said before there's a lot to like here! And I absolutely don't do hate-plays, hate-reads, or hate-LPs; this LP has always been coming from a place of me wanting to share a neat sci-fi story with people.

I just wish the cutesy anime-inspired dialogue would go away forever.

I think right now the only characters I like are Ava and Sola. Kryska and Icari are tolerable, and Claude has...toned down the horny a lot in installment 2. The prototypes aren't very compelling antagonists, the whole lost kingdom prophecy crap with Asaga is...present, Shields still comes across as a manipulative jerkoff taking advantage of his crew, and I suspect if Moon Slayer wasn't rewriting the entire drat thing this would be an easy hate LP for someone like me.

Like I've been saying, I can see where there's a lot of cool and interesting stuff in the game, but the sheer amount of rewrites and editing isn't disguising that there's a bunch of dumb poo poo. It feels more like an LP of what Moon Slayer wishes the game was rather than the actual game.

Let us pray this will be the last time they must be put in harm's way. Weapons hot. Helm, full speed ahead. Let’s finish this once and for all.

Day two of the Second Battle of Cera opens as we are face-to-face with a PACT fleet consisting of battleships and a surprisingly high number of Arcadius units.

I’ve been pumping a LOT of resources into upping our missile defenses, but it’s still a good idea to clear the board of the torpedo destroyers first.

I’ve also been putting significant resources into Sola’s sniper rifle, as an Arcadius unit finds out the hard way.

With the PACT fleet now broken into smaller groups, getting holes in the flak coverage is easier. A single torpedo with the splash damage and total damage upgrades takes out that middle battleship and all three surrounding Arcadius units.

Oh and I also bought the vanguard splash damage upgrade. It’s everything I imagined it would be.

And so after our very first turn, the opposing fleet has been almost totally wiped out. Well, that was easy, I guess!

The PACT fleet’s rate of fire is dropping! Their munition supplies are likely getting critically low.
That's the way ... keep pressing harder …
PACT flagship is signaling Force Yellow. They must be calling for reinforcements.
Gotta admit, I wouldn’t mind being in Fontana’s place right now, just so I could see the look on the prototypes … mask, I guess.

Meanwhile …

What are you babbling about, Fontana?! I’m very busy.
Your reserve fleet has pledged their loyalty to me. They will not be engaging. It’s over, prototype. You’ve lost. Now surrender and spare the lives of your men and women.
You would sacrifice my entire fleet just to cement your authority over PACT?
They are no longer comrades to the revolution, but merely your brainwashed puppets. Our revolution is against tyrants of all colors! Even those who purport to fly our crimson flag. You were a fool to believe the revolution could be wielded for your purposes. The galaxy will not miss you.

(We can do this! Cera's right there in front of us!)

What is it, Ava?
I'm ... getting some strange reports from Force Yellow.

You fool. Did you think that I wouldn’t have a contingency plan for something like this? All prototype units, activate the chain neural override!

They are now on course to join the PACT line of battle.
Get Fontana on the comm, now!

Our ships are not responding to our commands. The prototypes must have embedded a trojan deep within our systems to assume direct control of our ships somehow.
Captain!
Chigara, do you know what's going on?

The prototypes seem to be directly controlling the second fleet's systems through their telepathy!
They had one last trick up their sleeve, huh? How can we undo their control over the ships?
They seem to have wired the ships’ systems to respond to their neural waves, but I have a plan. It’s kind of crazy, but I think I can enter the prototype's neural link and attempt to interfere with their thoughts. Perhaps I'll be able to find a weakness in the system while directly connected with them!
Wait, your going to link your mind into their brain network or whatever!? Captain, that sounds like every flavor of crazy!

...
All right. We'll just have to trust Chigara. All units, provide the Liberty with cover fire while Chigara restores the second fleet's controls! Chigara ... good luck. Stay safe.
Yes, captain!

Chigara has a new ability, one that takes all of her energy for that turn. Which means that if we want to finish this quick, we are going to need to get by without her ability to disable enemy defences.

As always, the number-one priority is the enemy support ryders.

We’re able to do a number on the assault carriers, but they can still put a lot of missiles into space.

They should still know better than to get too close to us, though.

And they should definitely know better than to line their ships up all nicely like this.

Some short-range kinetics and long-range missile strikes, and the enemy is down to just one ryder. I still need to pop Chigara’s disrupt ability three more times but this should be a walk in the park now.

This is the end for you, little queen.

Oh? And how do you intend to do that?
Chigara will … will …
Hahahahaha! You mean our sister!?

Oh, how unfortunate for your poor captain. She’s in our thoughts, exposing to us the full details of the Alliance's battle plans! Did you honestly think that we would allow ourselves to be defeated so easily? That the betrayal of mere humans will affect our strength? PACT ... Alliance … the Neutral Rim ... it does not matter. In due time, all of it shall be destroyed all the same. And it will be here, over the skies of Cera, that the Alliance is defeated and the Sunrider finally falls! Enjoy watching as we take away everything you ever loved.
Now you’ve done it!

Captain, the Black Jack has broken formation!
What!? Asaga, what's wrong?
I'm sorry captain, but you’ve been tricked. Chigara is the traitor!
Black Jack is now on an intercept course for the Liberty!
Captain … I've ... always loved you! And I’m going to protect you … protect you all!

Ah. Well. This could be a problem.

GIVE BREADS!
Poor Asaga, so easily manipulated. She needs a vacation, and a therapist.

Some day Asaga will learn that perhaps the person flying the ship trying to kill you is maybe not that trustworthy.

Today is not that day.

Battle Brothers! Stop coming to meetings drunk and trying to adopt Tevery Best!

Lord General! Stop standing on the table and making up stupid operation names!

Emperor, why do I put up with these people?
I mean let's be fair Asaga is not in her right mind here. She frankly hasn't been for quite some time now.

Part 2: Blue on Blue

To the surprise of very few, Asaga has finally snapped. Every turn she will make a beeline for the Liberty and attack it with everything she’s got. She’ll ignore every other unit on the map while doing this. Rather suspiciously, PACT will also not attack her now. Although to be honest that’s most likely an engine limitation as I don’t think the game can handle three factions on the map at once.

She’s still rather far away, so I burn a turn by using Chigara’s flak-off ability instead of doing the next Disrupt.

If I had been planning ahead I would probably have put the Liberty in a more optimal position. Too late now; even moving one hex will waste another turn that you can’t use Disrupt.

And PACT isn’t running out of ships anytime soon.

With the Black Jack closer I fall back on the tried-and-true strategy of having the Bianca drag it up into melee range.

Did … did Icari just kill Asaga?

Nope, whenever the Black Jack is taken down to 0 HP it just respawns back where it started and resumes its single-minded charge at the Liberty. How? Don’t worry about it.

We’re only a few turns away from winning but that is a lot of assault carriers. If you remember Ava’s initial briefing you’ll recall that Force Yellow, the Fontana loyalists, had the bulk of the assault carriers. That means we’re fighting the hacked ships right now, unfortunately killing crews who do not want to fight us and are desperately trying to regain control of their ships.

On that morbid note, the Black Jack goes down once more to Kryska’s cannons, I run up the score a bit taking out more ships, and then it’s time to end this.

Liberty, status?!
A-almost ... done ...

Asaga’s coming in real hot, captain! What are we supposed to do!? Are we actually gonna shoot her down!?

Captain! Your orders!
(This isn’t a bluff for attention … the way she’s flying, Asaga's really means to kill Chigara! Do I give the kill order?)

Captain. I have a lock on the Black Jack's cockpit. I shall take full responsibility.
...

Watch me, captain! You're going to realize I was right!
I can only maintain a lock for four more seconds.

Pull the t-

W-what the-- Claude!? Are you all right!?

U-ugh ... Y-yes, captain … N-not so sure 'bout the Bianca though...
What are you doing!?

Now you listen to me, and listen to me good. There isn't a girl on board the Sunrider who likes how things turned out! Especially me! Just how do you think poor Claude feels? Completely forgotten by everyone! I can't even open my mouth without everyone turning away now! Useless old Claude, good for nothing but comic relief! But we've all been through too much to turn on each other! We're ... family, Asaga! Even though we get mad at each other, and make mistakes, and get jealous when she's with him … we can't betray each other! Nobody on the Sunrider is a traitor! Nobody!

W-why … I'm ... the hero … and yet why .... why does he never look my way …

Teeheehee … It's not the end. There's still--

What!?
E-EEAAHHH!
CLAAUUUDEEE!

Fool … who delivers long speeches in the middle of battle …?
I’ll kill you!
CLAUDE! S-she was too stupid to die, goddamnit! That ... IDIOT! (actual ingame dialogue)
All units! Form up around the Liberty! Nobody else dies today! IS THAT UNDERSTOOD!?
C-captain, I ...
Protect her.
...
Understood.

Meanwhile …

(Their voices ... I can hear them … My friends are in trouble! They need my help!)

Each line is spoken by a different prototype in the hive mind.

My sister … return to us. As you were meant to.
No. Just a little bit more ... and I can ...)
You are a prototype, just like us. You have no purpose but your mission.
That's not true! I have things I want to protect now! I'm not like you!
You were sent to keep a watchful eye over the one who would one day awaken to her destiny. And by fortune, your path crossed with Shields’, the would-be savior of the galaxy. We allowed you free reign in your interactions with him so we may learn his machinations. The insight you have brought us was ... astounding. To think we could acclimate to human company so well …
Lies! I'm Chigara Ashada! I was born on Diode from human parents! I'm not a clone like you! I'm human!
You think yourself human?
(This one … she's different from the others … is she their leader?)

Both you and 4L have experienced the emotion they call love … It fills you with warmth and strength. And yet, for 4L, it consumes her. Twists her body. Ravages her.

Soon, what you have both experienced will spread to all our sisters. We will change. I can only speculate what the future may hold for our kind. We thank you, Prototype C8. The information you have brought us will aid us immensely. But your mission has now been accomplished. 4L, return her to us. We shall extract her brain and mine it for what we can uncover. Kill the rest of them. Once those who resist us are dead, the galaxy will have no choice but to accept our rule.
You’re too late! Whoever you are, you won't have your way! We'll fight you!
Oh?
Love isn't so weak that it can be controlled by the likes of you! Because ... as long as we trust our allies, we're invincible! Love may confuse us ...

… blind us …

… or even make us angry and jealous …

But I'll defend it! I'll defend everyone! I'm Chigara Ashada ... And I'm a human!

Captain, the Force Yellow ships are breaking off!
Did she do it!?
A-ah ... captain … I've done it ... I’m back ...
Yes! Tell all the Alliance vessels to cease fire on Force Yellow and advance towards the remains of Force Red! Wipe out the prototypes' final defensive line!
Aye, captain!

Our ships are once again under our control. You have my thanks, captain.
I never imagined I'd be glad to hear you say that.
Beh. Looks like we've got no choice now. All ships, form up with the Alliance fleet and assist with the attack on the prototypes' final defensive line! I will not have it be said that at the decisive battle, Veniczar Fontana stood idly by while the Alliance fleet took all the glory! All ships, forward! Open fire!
This is it, everyone … attack!

I suppose this is one way to prevent Claude's constant attempts at getting the ship slapped with hostile work environment complaints.
