16 bit? Back when we was kids we only got a single bit on Christmas, as a treat
And we had to share it!

The timeline is interesting
In August 1993 Project Reality is announced and they’re starting work on the game a full year later...

Aug 93 is literally two years after the US SNES release.

June 23 1996 is the Japanese N64 release

To be fair, voice actor licensing is a thing in Japan and they probably thought it'd be easier all round.
Nintendo also might have just wanted higher-quality re-recordings, ala Metal Gear Solid 1. The US version of that game was recorded in a makeshift studio in an apartment due to it being a non-union gig (hence the cast all using aliases) and apparently in the master recordings you can hear cars driving by outside...

I'm pretty sure that's entirely false and literally the opposite of the truth? Unless I'm grossly mistaken Nintendo never ever claimed MQ was Ura Zelda and the simple fact that MQ is the same file size as OOT kind of helps bear that out. You don't need the DD/Expansion Pack to play Master Quest if you ran it on an N64.

Although we did develop Ura for the 64DD, it didn't use many of the special features. So it was very easy to port over to the GameCube without cutting any features.

Most of the Ura Zelda concepts (like NPCs following a set schedule) were used in Majora's Mask (though stuff like bushes staying cut down forever wasn't). A lot of supposed Ura Zelda stuff (like the Unicorn Fountain) is beta Ocarina footage that fans deluded themselves into thinking would be in Ura. Almost everything developed for Ura ended up in either Master Quest or Majora's Mask. The fantasy game Zelda fans built up in their heads for years isn't real, sorry.

From a little earlier but still generally part of this huge leak (yes there are roms from non-Nintendo companies in all of this):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IkEGBAQsK-Q
A Castlevania IV prototype. Has an isometric map screen for outside the castle, some different enemy and background art, missing II and III powerups and breakable blocks, and music has notably different mixes and loop sections (Level 2 is pretty much a completely new track) and placements. Links to songs in order are Theme of Simon -> (A complete alternative to) Forest of Monsters -> The Cave -> The Submerged City -> Cellar (scope that intro!) -> The Waterfalls -> ... Game restarts when you actually enter the castle proper! (Boss 1 (with an extra drum beat) and Map (a different mix of this actually ends up being Treasury Room in the final game!) are also in)

Ah, there was a second stream that hacked into later levels which are MUCH more unfinished, but you do get to see some more of the bosses!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TzSggnH5tg

Minor notes: double and tripleshot are still in but only from the way you can earn them from using subweapons, the game crashes when you beat Zapf Bat (might not have properly programmed the orb drop event), the ghosts in the Entrance Hall are wearing black instead of the red and white from the final game, regular enemies stop showing up after block 6, candles disappear after block 7-1, apparently the Clock Tower is still in (though the streamer didn't find a password for it) but there doesn't seem to be a Dracula fight or an ending in this build.

(edit to change the music links and add some extra notes)

Something Nintendo themselves have said repeatedly over the years is cut content tends to get recycled for later games, Wind Waker's unused temples being the well-known examples.

Wait it's 2TB of stuff???? Holy gently caress

Like I knew this was The Big One but that kinda puts the Pokemon leaks we've seen over the past two years to shame, jeez. Speaking of, was there ever a thread/any chatter on SA about the Gold/Silver leaks + all the other pokemon stuff that's surfaced over the couple years since? If not, this thread would be an ok place to get into that material, right?

I'll be interested in seeing more information about the "Sleep test" ROM in the first leak. It looks like an early spiritual successor to Gyromite that uses the mouse to guide a sleepwalker. I haven't seen much about it yet. Come to think of it I wonder if it was basic work that went into Mario and Wario.

Also loving seeing the numerous comments in one of the LTTP assembly that are just "sorry...". So polite!

Wait, was the Castlevania IV prototype part of this leak, or was it a separate leak that just coincidentally dropped at the same time? I'm just wondering why Nintendo would have the early files for one of Konami's games, rather than just the final files used for making the release cartridges.

It was part of the leak - it also had Goemon, Axelay and Parodius prototypes for whatever reason, but as far as I know those ones aren't as WIP as Castlevania.

EDIT: Super Ghouls n Ghosts and Super Aleste too, so not just Konami

I don't know the context for them or why those particular games were grouped together but as far as I know, a couple of them are identical to the retail release so that's definitely not true of all of them.
