if you show one with nearly no hardware in it it looks ridiculous, but with most of the drive bays populated, even that thing would be cramped to work on and with wide ribbon cables airflow was difficult to maintain.

OP imo computer cases are better than they've ever been, you can get weird poo poo, tiny ITX cases, bigass mega towers, glass, metal, whatever and it's all cheaper and better made than ever. if your taste is beige plastic then i'm sorry you had to leave 2003

also most of them have really nice built-in cable management and air filters that cover all the openings. new case designs are really great.

sometime around idk 2010ish i had a cooler master centurion 5. that was an altogether "OK" case. no frills but also a complete lack of bullshit.

it doesn't compare to modern cases but for the time it was affordable, readily available, had a simple design, and wasn't too cheaply made. there were a few versions and revisions but they sold this thing for like 10 years or more.

floppy drive
plextor cd reader
yamaha cd writer
zip drive
dvd drive
creative live drive that i used one time to hook up a midi keyboard

it had a huge, obnoxiously loud exhaust fan too

this loving case

the front mesh grills were placeholders not held by clips, anything would knock them easily into the case
front power button was also not flush with the case so depending on location it might get bumped accidentally or on my case clipped off completely

but let's address the real issue here. despite many people abandoning optical drives, and cases abandoning the need for 5.25 drive bays, we are still going with cases that seem to be designed for optical bays and then just have the bays removed. like, where's all the weird designs? at least theres a few cases that try to do some interesting poo poo but mostly its the same bullshit as 20 years ago. sure, there's mesh and radiator mounting options, and now we've got ~~glass panels~~ so you can circlejerk your RGB leds

i really never thought about this and you're right. i have this case with a big rear end front face that can't open, but i have 2 USB ports, and they're on the top. this is stupid.

My old case. Dumb milspec aesthetic, unfiltered vents on both the top and sides, and all of said mounts had lovely rubber washers that degraded over time. The holes were too big to screw in fans without them.
