I waited something like four months in my library's ebook queue for All Systems Red. I'm about two-thirds through (the gang has just bailed out of their habitat after realizing the rogue SecUnits were coming), and so far:

I was surprised at what a quick read it is. When I saw it in the bookstore, it looked like a full novel. 25 week wait for the next one :v:

Sure, Skarsgaard is still a weird choice for Murderbot, but god drat, everyone else looks great. Even if everything else goes awry, there have been a bunch of excellent casting choices. I find myself in the unusual position of being more hopeful after a full trailer, rather than the reverse.

Honestly, Skarsgaard is pretty close to what I imagined for Murderbot in the broad strokes. Yeah he's a bit handsome, but he's also pretty generic in the face while looking imposing, which is what I imagined The Company would have chosen for it, and he's physically intimidating in his overall build, which is definitely what the company would have chosen, while still being relatively lean. What little we know is that it's built for physical strength and fighting and usually the tallest person in the room, which implies a fairly masculine Skarsgaard like build and size to the body.

(Because the books are super sparing about their descriptions of Murderbot I get the sense that the general internet fandom ended up kinda creating their own for it and got annoyed when the show didn't follow their headcanon.)

In any case it looks like he's definitely pulling off the appropriate amount of awkward, which is the most important part of it.

Madurai posted:

I still feel like someone like Tilda Swinton would have been a better choice for the murderbot, for my head canon.

In my head, Murderbot will always remain some weird amalgation of Zoie Palmer (The Android in Dark Matter) and Laura Birn (Demerzel in The Foundation).
Possibly because they are easier to relate to (it's hard being a stunningly beautiful, emotionally troubled killing machine) for boring superficial reasons, and because I have less imagination than I think I do.

MikeJF
Dec 20, 2003

Murderbot being non-binary has always been a matter of how it thought of itself and not of how it appeared, and honestly it's probably not great to assume non-binary identities should be associated with an androgynous appearance or vice versa. People who happen to have big beefy masculine beardy bodies or curvy hourglass traditional pretty feminine bodies can be non-binary too just as easily.

At the risk of putting my foot in my mouth, I don't think it's wrong to have imagined a humanoid android with no reason to have been built gendered, and who's appearance is deliberately very vague, as being of indeterminate gender. Like, sure they could look like Handsome McBumchin, but why would they? Why would it be wrong to imagine that the Company would have built them to look like a slightly unsettling, uncanny valley version of Generic Human. Temu Human, if you will.
I'm sure they made the casting decision for sound and valid reasons, and I'm sure the actor can play the role, but me personally I just didn't see the character as looking so obviously like a completely normal good looking human dude. Obviously having a totally different read is fine though.

Wasn’t there the implication that the human form was also used for pleasure bots? IIRC that’s one of the arguments for Murderbot presenting female.

But then maybe there was a beard involved later. I’m realizing I don’t remember these well.

It's not an android, it's a cyborg, its body is cloned reengineered human reinforced and dramatically augmented with a bunch of parts replaced. And it's explicitly able to pass for an augmented human without attracting suspicion. From the book, when it sees another construct: Its facial features were different from mine, but all Units’ features are different, assigned randomly based on the human cloned material that’s used to make our organic parts.

Remulak posted:

That's straight up stated, it refers to ComfortUnits as sexbots, but while those are still constructs they're totally different designs and include gendered parts and presumably the client can choose from gender presentation and sex organ configurations. It's noted that unlike SecUnits, ComfortUnits are often altered for clients at deployment centres.

Ah, OK.

The Murderbot stories do have a lot of humor in them, it's not an unreasonable cut for a preview to focus in on that.

It remains to be seen if they've cut the less funny parts of the stories from the show.

It's interesting to see how everyone interpreted Murderbot differently. I assumed it was meant to look intimidating, and so would be tall and broad in a way that (present day) people would interpret as male. So I'm also surprised with the TV show designs. I was imagining something stompier, such that when it moves fast it's surprising.

I listened to the audiobooks, narrated by Kevin R Free, and so my brain defaulted Murderbot to masculine. It wasn't until I called it him in the GBS LGBSTQIA thread and people said they saw it as feminine or even completely androgynous that I realized that wasn't the only way to look at it.

I had just come off Ancillary Justice so I did have a vaguely feminine voice in my head but an androgynous body. It was pretty vague, so much so that it wasnt jarring to see their casting choice. I do agree that in their armor I thought they would be pretty bulky because it seems like Murderbot regularly moves a lot faster than people seem to expect.

MikeJF
Dec 20, 2003

Mensah describes it as having a 'lean bulk' in her short story, but that was out of the armour and I do vaguely recall descriptions that the armour is intended to be bigger and more intimidating.

They might have just slimmed it down on-screen for practical purposes. Especially given that a lot of the time it's going to be acting and emoting largely through its body language, a bulkier armour would make that harder to see.

If people haven't read it, Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory is a short from Dr Mensah's point of view set soon after Exit Strategy.

Compulsory is a very short short set before the first book (and in this post's OP). There's a version you can buy on Amazon for 99c that's a slightly expanded version but it's still only a few pages.

I'll admit to being annoyed, from the looks of the clip, that the characters are also asking about Murderbot's genitals and gender, especially when the books really seem to emphasize that no one really cares about that kind of thing in the future.

But on the other hand, Skarsgard is really emphatically only describing Murderbot as "it" in these, so I can take the win there.

probably in part a translation for screen of this passage from All Systems Red

quote:

I did everything I could think of to do, then finally let myself go on standby while I caught up on my serials. I’d watched three episodes of Sanctuary Moon and was fast forwarding through a sex scene when Dr. Mensah sent me some images through the feed. (I don’t have any gender or sex-related parts (if a construct has those you’re a sexbot in a brothel, not a murderbot) so maybe that’s why I find sex scenes boring. Though I think that even if I did have sex-related parts I would find them boring.) I took a look at the images in Mensah’s message, then saved my place in the serial.
