As cool as a legit two-way player would be it's clear Ohtani has a long road to recovering from his TJS and he should probably just stay a hitter from now on if he wants his career to continue. It's just surreal knowing that I went to his USA pitching debut and watching him pump 100 plus a nasty splitter past multiple A's hitters and thought "holy poo poo this guy is going to be an unstoppable ace."

GalacticAcid posted:When Judge hit the second jack today ARod was like “Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Lebron James: Aaron Judge.” Quote isn’t verbatim its from my memory, but those are the athletes he compared him to. I honestly believe Judge could be that for MLB if he could stay healthy for a 5-6 consecutive years or so, but so far he hasn't been able to do that. It's not fair to him - I know he doesn't want to be injured - but the lucky aspect of being a generation defining athlete is being durable. I mean also that, and playing for a big market team. If Trout had been drafted and played for the Yankees his entire career, he'd be that guy you could put up there with Jordan, Woods, etc. But he's on the Angels and doesn't do much to market himself so...

literally as soon as I read your post I got a push notification about Scherzer's injury lol Anwyay this whole slapfight is dumb. It is simultaneously true that Kelly is a piece of poo poo enforcer bully, that the Astros are entitled cheating babies who can't even flirt with the idea that maybe they did something wrong, and MLB loving sucks for putting us in this situation to begin with by just letting the Astros players completely off the hook with zero punishment.

Yeah I have no idea how you deal with the St. Louis situation fairly. Because at this point it's not just them, other teams who don't have COVID cases have missed a ton of games because their series vs them got postponed. So what, now everybody who had to play the Cards has to play a way more aggressive schedule? Or if those games just don't get made up and we go by percentage, how is it fair to the teams who actually played a full 60 games? The whole situation is hosed. bewbies posted:good poo poo from jomboy gently caress the Astros.

Just a reminder that Cintron was reportedly one of the central figures in setting up the 2017 cheating scheme:quote:The Astros’ system — dubbed “Codebreaker” — was discussed by Tom Koch-Weser, an Astros analyst who creates advance reports on opposing teams, in an email obtained by the Journal. In the e-mail, Koch-Weser specifically names Cintrón as part of the scheme. From the Codebreaker article:

"If" is doing a lot of work in that statement. The most Cardinals bullshit thing will be for them to win the WS this year despite only having played ~10 games, because playoff eligibility was entirely based on winning percentage to keep things "fair".

Pitcher bWAR is almost entirely based on RA/9, and pitcher fWAR is almost entirely based on FIP. Which is actually kinda nice because taken together you get a nice overall sense of a guy's season and any discrepancy in what he did vs what the peripherals say he probably should have done.

Strelok604 posted:When it comes to pitchers, bWAR is descriptive and works backwards from the result, whereas fWAR is based on their skills and how good they were on things they can control. It's descriptive vs prescriptive. fWAR is better and I'll die on this hill Eh, fWAR isn't perfect either since it is almost entirely derived from FIP, which doesn't account for park factors or batted ball data and so makes a high strikeout pitcher look better than a contact managing one because it sees a lot of balls in play but a low ERA and goes "aha, the pitcher got lucky!" when really no, they just got a ton of softly hit balls for easy outs. It's not as simple as fWAR > bWAR, you have to look at them together as well as the type of pitcher you're dealing with and their home park and draw an inference.
