Oh hey, remember when we were talking about how garbage RBIs are? I love Max, but do yourselves a favor and check out the br pages on these two, it shows exactly how misleading counting stats can be. I dunno how to get the last 162 games, but Judge had to be something like 20 to 30 points of OPS+ better over that same span.

Also, I know you posted that for the fun of it, IcePhoenix, not to make any serious argument. This really just reminded me how great Judge is.

Yeah if you click through, people in the comments were pointing out that Judge's OBP is like 50 points higher so I would assume the OPS+ is about that different.

Kepler probably plays better defense though :v:

Judge is apparently a very good defender

the last two years he's had 1.4 and 1.7 dWAR to Kepler's 1.1 and 0.8

That's because Kepler has been playing a lot of games in CF though

think of it this way

you have to judge and react towards catching a ball coming at you faster than a pitcher throws it, except the hitter isn't trying to aim at a 2x2 foot box

I kind of disagree. Positioning most of the time is handled by coaching staffs and front offices. The 'flashy play doesn't equal good play' thing is true, but as I understood it, Jeter's range not his positioning limited him. Moreover, flashy plays can also be good plays too. I'd argue great defenders are those capable of both flashy plays and making more plays routine. Consistency and first step/route taking are also important components which differentiate players, regardless of the players positioning.

Denard Span vs Byron Buxton encapsulates this to me. Span had decent speed at his peak and took good routes. When he got to the ball, he rarely made mistakes. He was a good defender, but was rarely 'flashy' (diving, difficult scoops, home run robbing etc). Buxton is a great defender because his speed and instincts get him to balls almost nobody else can get to, and he's also sure handed when he gets there. Buxton is absolutely flashy while also making plays look routine that would have been at Span's outer range.

I really wish there was a highlight compilation of balls hit to the gap that would be easy doubles normally but Buxton just casually runs them down and catches them like routine fly balls. Stuff like that never makes the highlight reels, obviously, but he makes them all the time.

This is a bit of an extreme example because it might have made a highlight reel but like, it's ridiculous how much ground he covers and he doesn't even have to dive or even fully extend himself to catch it

The theme of today's TwinsFact™ is the number three.

We are roughly a third of the way through the season, and even though Byron Buxton has about two thirds as many plate appearances as Mike Trout, his (b)WAR is nearly three times higher.

HE'S 21!!

He's suffering from Trout syndrome with Tatis Jr, in that because there is another super young uberprospect lighting the league on fire everyone wonders what's wrong with him because he's not.
