I put together a list of the #2 and #3 scoring leaders for the post-ABA franchises sans Miami, because I wanted to see how Bosh stacks up to other guys in some kind of context.

Pelicans
David West, 8 seasons, not retired
Chris Paul, 6 seasons

Grizz
Marc Gasol, 11 seasons
Zach Randolph, 8 seasons

Raptors
Chris Bosh, 7 seasons, not retired
Kyle Lowry, 8 seasons

Mavs
Rolando Blackman, 11 seasons, jersey retired
Mark Aguirre, 8 seasons, not retired

Timberwolves
Andrew Wiggins, 6 seasons
KAT, 5 seasons

Orlando
Nick Anderson, 10 seasons, not retired
Vucevic, 8 seasons

Hornets
Dell Curry, 10 seasons, not retired
Gerald Wallace, 7 seasons, not retired

Out of the active players, the only guaranteed guys I see getting their jerseys retired are Marc+Zach (because Grit and Grind was way more than just basketball) and Kyle, too early to talk about KAT yet. Mark Aguirre is a really good parallel to Bosh here, he put up numbers for a bunch of years in Dallas before he got traded to Detroit and won a couple rings. If Dallas isn't thirsty enough to retire his jersey, Toronto shouldn't feel pressured to retire Bosh's. However, Minnesota should absolutely retire Wiggins' 22.

dell, gerald wallace, nick anderson, aguirre, west, and cp3 should all absolutely have their jerseys retired but i’m from the achool of thought that more jerseys hanging up = better

if we’re going small hof rules, then west, cp3, wallace, and dell should still have their jerseys retired by their respective organizations (and obviously marc and zach but you mentioned them already)

how many players does your favorite team have on it that are not NBA level? Either developmental players 1-2 years out of the g league or guys who are just really lovely. I know you typically don't want to go with a rotation deeper than 10 dudes at the most, fewer in the playoffs. right now my team (Utah) has 5 g league guys and a 6th guy who is a fringe NBA player on his best day. this seems like a lot to me but I don't know how other teams typically do it.

on the spurs, besides the two way guys (quinndary weatherspoon and drew eubanks) there’s chimezie metu and trey lyles who are d league calibre and maybe someday could be end of the bench guys

as far as guys who aren’t super young, the worst player on the spurs right now is probably tyler zeller (who i didn’t even realize was on the spurs until i looked at the roster)

look i’m just gonna say it luka’s the latest (and actually greatest) great white hope which would mean something if the nba hadn’t spent the last four years branding itself as the wokest, hippest, blackity blackest league of all four major sports

there’s no conspiracy to push him by the nba, he’s just that good, i think the nba would greatly prefer that it’s next all time great was trae young or zion or maybe a chinese person as an olive branch; perk is not allowed to say it’s because he’s white because that’s The Bad Kind of Controversy besides it being, you know, wrong

also for what it’s worth i’m pretty sure tgwh trope is dead and buried in basketball since all the culture warriors are mad that they would have to read jerseys that say black lives matter or whatever

It does make sense the league might want a prominent white star, but I still don’t really think that’s what’s happening here. And it doesn’t really sound like Declan does either? Not really sure what he was driving at

my posting is very freewheeling and stream of consciousness

so, to clarify: in my opinion, the nba doesn’t care about having white stars specifically, they want young and exciting stars that help them sell merchandise to their core demographics (younger americans and chinese people) and expand into new territories (like hyping up rui hachimura to attract japanese fans) but aren’t especially interested in catering to eastern europeans, since they’re already interested in the nba but aren’t spending as much on it

the league will market luka because he’s a good, exciting player, not because of any particular agenda

chilihead posted:

This is a hot take. The league is a quote "woke, hip, blackity, black league" because 80's of it's players are inner city or poor black american players."
You could also talk about the demographic of it's fanbase, but c'mon. I read countless sports forums and blogs and the people who frequent them are not a majority of young urban, poor males, much less african american males.
The league promotes all of it's stars, some more then others. Who was the last non international white player superstar? For a millisecond my mind went to Steve Nash before i remembered he is Canadian.
To quote a famous person"It is what it is." The truth is very similar to baseballs current player base. After integration MLB had dozens of black star players, but slowly over the last 20 years they have all but disappeared. Different demographics have gravitated to different sports the last generation.I can talk for hours about how baseball is about upper middle class american kids and poor latino's but gonna save that for another forum.

the nba makes a point of driving home that it’s the most politically active sports league; this is in sharp contrast to the david stern years which were more or less demographically identical to now but instituted targeted policies like the dress code to police expressions of blackness (see also the blackballing of craig hodges and mahmoud abdul-rauf)

social consciousness has been commodified and it’s what young consumers prefer so it’s what the nba endorses; embracing that stuff is good and cool but it’s driven by financial motivations, you know?

(i would love to talk about the relationship between baseball and race but people in this thread don’t want to talk baseball)

the package will probably include sexton, since ben simmons can pass and dribble but can’t shoot and garland can shoot but can’t pass or dribble, so put them together and you got a dream backcourt

i imagine that they think the sixers would jump at the chance to have kevin love but at that point they’d have like $85 million a year tied up in three players, two of which are on the wrong side of 30 and the other with significant injury issues; mostly i think they’re just trying to ship out love and seeing what the market’s like but i can’t imagine the cavs not including some picks even if they’re down the road

This is the third time someone has posted this kind of take and I thoroughly disagree.

The NBA decided to host this tournament taking attention away from a massive social movement and they are pouring in a metric poo poo ton of resources to maintain a bubble that is still precarious at best. The integrity of this bubble requires such rigorous testing that it is probably matched only by the wealthiest of people or the political elite. They are doing this for the sake of TV contracts and nothing else.

You can argue about all the good things the NBA is doing to push forth the social movement, but they could have done all those things AND MORE had they not been hosting this tournament.

You can argue they are off setting the impact of their rigorous testing by providing said testing as well to the communities around the bubble, but they could have done that AND MORE had they not been hosting this tournament.

The basketball has been phenomenal. It's good that people who work in the NBA have the opportunity to earn a paycheck, especially the staff who are not players/coaches. It's been really good seeing (some of) the players take this opportunity to spread really good messaging. But let's not pretend that this was still a good idea or that the NBA is on some moral high ground for being able to pull this off.

I agree with most of this take but I think the NBA taking away from a massive social movement is overstated.

Bomani made a point on his podcast about how only the NBA was being criticized for taking attention away from protests where as no one accused MLB of doing the same thing. Which pissed him off because he thinks the insinuation there is that black people don't have the ability to focus on two things at once.

sports in general coming back have taken attention off of protests; it’s just that the nba as a vehicle of change (which in itself is wildly overstated) has certain expectations on it (which in turn actually fall on the players)

players like kyrie irving correctly predicted as soon as sports came back, the focus on social issues would drop away; it doesn’t matter if it’s baseball or basketball or whoever, it’s just that the nba has built itself as More Than A Game and proceeded to host games in the middle of a pandemic and widespread social unrest, which would seem to run counter to the nba’s own branding

i don’t hold the players responsible for that, of course, and hopefully no one else is; it’s the corporate structure that holds responsibility here

all that being said, baseball is very much stuck in the past and the idea of baseball as vehicle for change is on no one’s mind; nobody’s mad at mlb because they don’t expect anything from the boring white guy sport
