Weird that they NBA Champs got their first game so late it was actually their opponent's second game. Almost like the NBA gives the only Canadian team no respect.

The best record the Carter Raptors ever achieved, 47-35, is worse than the worst recorded by the Raptors since the Rudy Gay trade in 2013-2014.

If Derozen somehow retires before Lowry, his number can be retired first. Otherwise it had better be Lowry. Carter's already got some statute his mom built for him using his money. That's enough.

To be fair, couldn't you say Vince Carter was more than just a ROY, All Star, and Dunk contest winner? The guy made an atrocious Toronto team enjoyable to watch, took them to their first playoffs, and inspired Canadian kids to actually play basketball. Could Antwan Jamison have done the same thing? Would the Raptors have stayed in Canada if they didn't have that amazing surge?

That last point is very clear yes. The question only arises out of a fallacy created by how Canadian teams get covered by US sports networks. Which is to say they're basically not covered, for the very good reason that those networks don't air in Canada.

The Raptors inaugural season was in 1995. In the winter of 20181998, while Vince Carter was still in college, Maple Leaf Gardens Inc. (i.e. the Leafs) bought out what was left of the original ownership after Isaiah Thomas tried a power play to take over the franchise and it blew up in his face. After that acquisition there was zero chance of a move. The Maple Leafs were and are a financial juggernaut, and at that time they were building a new arena in downtown Toronto. The Raptors were part of that business plan, a compliment to the Leafs in keeping the arena fully tenanted. Irrespective of how bad the team was doing, it made financial sense to keep them in Toronto. Consequently there has never been a time in the franchise's history where a move remotely made sense or was being threatened.

Sure, people can say what they want. I also think it's reasonable for a franchise to not want to retire the jersey of a player who was as toxic in their last year as Vince was.

The way he left was so, so bad. Levered being the first franchise player to get his way on personnel moves. They were bad moves. He got frustrated, and then quit and forced a legendarily bad trade.

There are various vaccines, some in stage 3 trials. But it's going to be months before they really know if they'll work. And if they do work, it's going to take months to years to ramp up production to where it's needed for literally everyone on earth. Especially if it turns out that working means it is 50% effective and that protection lasts only for 6 months.

It's in their interests to plan for things getting much better, but that likelihood of that occurring is modest.

I mean some teams were a lot more prepared, some teams have seen an uptick in injuries, some teams haven't been able to shake off the rust, some teams don't even appear to be playing for wins while others are absolutely gunning for their lives. It's like, the beginning of the season is usually chaotic and then things settle, but now you have that chaos at the end of the regular season. I think that affects teams in ways that don't necessarily mean anything long-term when things go back to "normal" (whenever that is).

This fair and accurate. Also, for teams chasing and trying to pick up games, the removal of the truly bad teams (except the Wizards) meant it seemed like they would face an even steeper uphill. But as it turns out it is far more complicated. Some of the good teams aren't trying, some are trying at random, and some are going full out.

It is a super weird vibe.

This undersells how good og has become under the radar. His defence was always good, but it's been flat out great in the bubble. And if his bubble offence turns out to be for real, he'll finally get some attention for his all nba defence. Which sounds stupid, but that seems to be how it works.

Yeah. The Nets played above expectations, notwithstanding that they lost decisively. That said, the Raptors reserves having video game stats from playing against whomever the Nets could hire to fill and roster was foreseeable.

quote:

In filings submitted to the court Tuesday, lawyers for Alan Strickland say Ujiri is “taking advantage of the now pervasive anti-law enforcement prejudices and to falsely allege racial animus and prejudicial bias is the reason for Strickland’s conduct on the date of the incident.

The counterclaim also says Ujiri’s assertion that he had on the proper credential to enter the court after Toronto’s NBA championship-clinching win in June 2019 was “also a wilful attempt to mislead the media and the public and taint the jury pool. Deputy and Mrs. Strickland submit that this false and misleading claim is an act of bad faith undertaken for a bad faith purpose.””
https://www.thestar.com/sports/rapt...uty-claims.html

The sheriff's department promulgated the narrative that Ujiri was the aggressor, despite knowing there was video disproving it. The same type of abuse of the public trust which has resulted in injustice for untold thousands of people of colour because of the traditional bias to believe police. At a minimum Strickland went along with the public smear and then attempted to take advantage of it within his lawsuit.

Ujiri's lawyers released videos disproving the police narrative. Strickland's response? To ignore that the police narrative has been disproved and instead claim the man he is suing is playing to the public's "pervasive anti-law enforcement prejudices".

It's a trippy level of arrogance. How often has this guy been believed in court, just because he's a cop, to make him think he can "Because I am a cop" through multiple video angles and against topflight legal counsel?

Very much this. In 2000-2001, peak Vinsanity and easily the high watermark for the franchise during its first 19 years, was good enough for a 5th seed and an upset win in round 1 of the playoffs.

Harden used a shell company to win bid for the COVID testing contract and then hire strippers to staff it. He's been using a Dennis Nedry style override of the theme park security system to get the strippers in, but last night there was a bug in the system. Per the contingency plan, House takes the fall.
