The goon hive mind had the Lakers as the seven seed just behind the six seeded Warriors. I left the Lakers out because I was banking on AD or LBJ having a major injury. In order to correctly guess all sixteen playoff teams in a given year one must make two or three crazy inclusions or exclusions.

Only seven voters picked the Lakers to win the title. Less than the Nuggets, Jazz and 76ers.

Also, the Lakers were selected as the second most trainwreck team of 2020 (behind only the Knicks). I am happy with my choice of the Bulls this year. An annual tradition.

Some do but it's a much harder sell when you have the biggest weapons and the wealthiest idols that some worship. That sells American exceptionalism pretty well. One can go back to the 1800s and see that US leaders had doubts about the country. Lincoln had quotations that'd be considered very anti-American these days. Also, winning WWII helps if you have to point to a pivotal inflection point. 75 years ago we dropped two very large bombs on Japan. If Germany had figured out how to strap nuclear weapons onto V-2 rockets we'd be having a different conversation.

But there are a lot of blind spots and so many intellectually dishonest partisans. Tens of millions of people believe that if you raise minimum wage slightly the US will turn into Venezuela. It does show the efficacy of accurate and fast testing. Disproving the ignoramus politicians who claim we're doing too much testing. Getting test results back a week later is not exactly beneficial as same day results.

Now the longer this goes on the more it'll be accepted. The general population already tacitly accepts that millionaires/billionaires should get much better treatment than the tens of millions of US citizens with a negative net worth in a variety of ways. So if things continue to worsen you'll have many saying that the super wealthy have earned the right to be tested daily while the rest of the world should only get tested once every few months or something.

I agree with most of this take but I think the NBA taking away from a massive social movement is overstated.

Bomani made a point on his podcast about how only the NBA was being criticized for taking attention away from protests where as no one accused MLB of doing the same thing. Which pissed him off because he thinks the insinuation there is that black people don't have the ability to focus on two things at once.

Some here included all sports. One could also include movie theaters, restaurants, parks, dearth of jobs etc. The insinuation I gleaned was that the NBA playoffs is going to garner a lot more attention than regular season MLB. Many do not have the ability to focus on MLB baseball no matter how hard they try.

Some of the novelty of this middling insurrection was that it couldn't be explained away as just being a minority issue. Wealthy folk were even more frightened when they saw unrest growing in areas without minorities and tons of video footage showing various races banding together to form raiding parties in wealthy areas. They know the wealth gap is continuing to increase in this pandemic and don't know how longer these precarious positions can continue to widen.

Bomani has demonstrated a knack for shoehorning certain dynamics into conversations before e.g. trying to make ranking Isiah Thomas vs. Larry Bird strictly a racial thing as if the stats had no part in it.

"So what happened? How does a player who during the 1950s led the Philadelphia Warriors to a championship, won three consecutive scoring titles, was a six-time all-star and four-time all-NBA first-teamer, fade so quickly, so thoroughly into the fog?

In part, it's because Johnson played before widespread TV coverage, lacked charisma, and looked like a geek. Maybe more significant, he played center just before Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell revolutionized the position and the sport.

"Neil Johnston truly is a forgotten legend," NBA blogger Drake Misek wrote in 2015. "For a player … to be so unknown when he's one of the top 10 most efficient players in NBA history and had a career comparable to many of the most acclaimed centers, seems like a disservice to the man's legacy."

Johnston developed and honed a hook shot that was his era's sky-hook, a deadly and nearly unstoppable offensive weapon. He was first again in scoring and minutes in 1953-54, and first in scoring and rebounding the following season.

Then during a 1958 preseason game in St. Louis, he injured a knee when he ran into a wall. By season's end, at age 30, he was through as a player. Understandably fond of his now-idled star, Gottlieb hired him to coach the Warriors in what was Chamberlain's rookie season, 1958-59. It was a toxic mix. For whatever reason, Chamberlain had no respect for Johnston, and the coach no patience for his superstar's enigmatic nature.
But if one was going to go, it wasn't going to be Chamberlain. The problem was solved in March 1961 when, despite a 95-59 record in two seasons, Johnston quit. "I can't go on like this," he said. "It's better I quit now to save myself a lot of headaches and heartaches."

"I've shown his photo to various doctors and when they see his elongated face and neck, they're all convinced he suffered from Marfan syndrome," said Caplinger, referring to the genetic disorder that most typically afflicts the hearts of unusually tall persons."

Gotcha, thank you both. Given how he plays today that's just so hard to imagine.

Some thought he was just a fourth quarter garbage man. But he was one of the best scorers even back then.

I don't honestly know if Carlisle is a better coach than Doc, D'Antoni, Spo, Bud, Stevens or Kerr. I feel like who would do better depends on the team, roster and how you are grading.

But I feel like him, D'Antoni and Doc have been doing it long enough that they deserve the benefit of the doubt over the newer guys (and yes I know Spo has been coaching for a while, but a lot of that was when they were a superteam). I think even Carlisle's detractors would admit he's a top 10 coach of the 3 point era.

Coach rankings from a few years back:

code:
Name O	D	O+D
Doc Rivers 0.3	1.9	2.2
Brad Stevens 1.5 -0.4	1.1
Mike D'Antoni 1.3 -1.1	0.2
Rick Carlisle 0 -0.5 -0.4

Is there zero chance Wiggins just becomes a monster inside with Klay and Steph spreading the floor? I think they'll be a playoff team but I have no guess as to what seed they get.

Not a zero chance but I'm skeptical that The Electrician and The Human Torch can return to what they were before.

In 2016 they combined for 888.76 NP together during the regular season. That's the most in NBA/ABA history. Even more than Bird/McHale in 1987 who reached 854.52 NP.

The 2020s Warriors may look like the 1990s Celtics.

I dont like that Dorris refers to Celtics by their first name. I'm sure she does it occasionally for other teams too but talking about Brad and Danny and Jason and Gordon makes me sick to my stomach. I understand this is a me problem.

I want Jim Boylen to host the 2020 NBA Finals and hear him talk about how all the players have "great spirits" etc. This is a me problem.

2003 with the Spurs and Pistons, if I heard correctly on TNT just now.

Yes, 2003 is the only year it has happened before.

Basically going in today there was a 1in5 chance the Lakers would meet the Bucks in the finals and a 1in370 chance the Magic would meet the Trail Blazers.

Now the tables haven't quite been turned but these playoffs will be interesting in the sense that all the players are way more rested than usual.

:rip: LBJ and the Lakers. We hardly knew them.

is there a record for number of consecutive #7 picks

Bulls have it if you include Lauri Markkanen from the Wolves in 2017.

The Kings got #7 in 1990, 1992 and 1993. The Warriors got #7 in 1960 and 1961.

I'm not gonna pretend that the Blazers are the favorite by any means, but LeBron was also the first person ever to have a 20-15-15 postseason game so it's not like there's reasonable room for improvement in every facet of LA's game

Anyway this series is already amazing and even if Portland loses in 5 I'm very satisfied.

It will be interesting if LBJ does a QD or a 20/20/20 game in a loss.

Hashtag Banterzone posted:

I know this is tempting fate but LA is a 6.3 SRS team that's missing a couple important role players and Portland is prolly a bit better than the 4.4 SRS team they were last season.

If LAL wins the title they'll be the second worst ranked 3P shooting champion this century. Trailing only the 2010 Lakers.

Yes, the bad part is that they smoothed the lottery odds so much that no amount of rigging will ever look statistically suspicious unless a team wins the #1 pick six or more years in a row.

Like, I can't imagine Mark Cuban ever signing off on some other team getting the lottery rigged in their favor any year he's in the lottery. Or that enough owners thinking Dan Gilbert is a real swell guy and deserves a break.

Dan Gilbert was not the product being sold. LBJ bringing a title to Cleveland was the product.

Also, if a group of owners could prove to Mark Cuban that he'd gain more $$$ by LBJ winning a title he could be swayed and controlled.
