So I noticed Level 2 requires 400 XP, level 3 requires 1100, while level 4 requires 1400. Does this mean level 5 is gonna need 2100? Is the XP requirement per 2 levels static?

I'm curious because if it is static then investing a bit in Charisma for the XP bonus may be a good idea generally. Usually XP requirement increases constantly per level and the XP bonus would barely do anything since it takes too long to give you a return on your investment.

It's probably too early to answer that, but I also went with Sadomasochist instead of Death Wish on my Sniper under the assumption that there will be worthwhile armour effects you don't wanna miss out on. There's a YT guy that claimed there are AP bonuses you can get from armor, fwiw.

By the way, is it just me, or is the... pre-combat kind of janky? It feels like I'm supposed to micromanage all of my units to put them in a good position out of the enemies' detection range before taking the first shot, and it looks like it's gonna get tedious. Or am I just too much in the XCOM alpha-striking mindset

I've only played on Supreme Jerk, but in my experience micromanaging positioning before initiating combat is 100% necessary and will typically mean the difference between an easy stomp and getting slaughtered.

Hmm, alright. I was thinking of restarting on Supreme, too. I guess I can just get used to it.

How are melee characters, by the way? I started with a Brawling guy, and while the game did warn me that they start off weak, I didn't think it literally means wet noodle levels. Are swords/blunt weapons better?

Nope. The game does show you which enemies you can shoot at what accuracy when you mouseover the square you're gonna move to, so you can make an informed decision. No luck if you want to just undo a misclick, though

Heavy weapons and explosives on the same guy feels natural at the beginning of the game, but then I quickly realized I wanted to have a flamethrower and a machine gun and a rocket launcher equipped and that doesn't really work. Still fiddling around with different builds to see where a rocket launcher would make the most sense and I'm leaning toward on my sniper.

This is the conclusion I came to as well. Small/Automatic/Big Guns/Melee both have two types of weapons already and the perk tree encourages you to use both in your weapon slots, so only Sniper Rifle and Brawling characters are left.

The natural Sniper quirk picks like Sadomasochist and Death Wish also work well with rocket launchers, whether you just want to boost your rocket damage even more or fire off a rocket + shoot in the same turn.

Shhh... don't wake up the sleeping lion :3:

So the Strike Rate stat means your Strike meter increases by that % with each attack, right? I haven't really paid attention to it, so correct me if I'm wrong

Base Strike Rate is 6%, at Charisma 1 that's 8%, which means 13 attacks to fully charge up your meter. 2 Charisma means 10% which means 10 attacks, then it lowers by 1 attack per Charisma point until Charisma 7 that gives you 20% Strike Rate for 5 attacks. Then you need go all the way to Charisma 10 to reduce that to 4 attacks. So 7 Charisma may be a good place to stop in general (although I guess you might as well get to 10 Charisma eventually for the EXP bonus)

Sniper Rifles also have an innate Strike Rate bonus that seems to increase with Weapon Level, so the breakpoints may be different there.

This sucks because the first time I went to do the caravan but got blown out and the second time I didn't know you could walk directly from your base to Colorado Springs.
So if I'm going to start over a question: Will I regret making my Sniper a Poindexter? Nobody shoots at him anyway.

If you want the Sniper to be primarily a Sniper, taking an offensive quirk like Sadomasochist is probably better. But if the Poindexter part is more important, then yeah, Sniper Rifle isn't a bad choice.

It's hard to say, but I do like having it on my leadership/lockpicking/hacking guy regardless because this game likes to high-ball its skill requirements. The Bizarre is relatively early in the game but it already has 7 Lockpick and 6 Nerd Stuff checks. And there are no other good perks for a skill monkey type character anyway.

Speaking of cover, for a cover-based shooting battle system there usually isn't much cover to go around on the maps. Most of the time I'm shooting out of cover whether because cover objects are sparse to begin with or the available covers are crap for shooting from.

Ultimately I don't think it actually affects the gameplay that much, but I just find it funny.

itry posted:

There aren't a lot of sniper perks. If your sniper does enough damage, or has a high crit change, the level 10 perk can be very powerful. You can basically clean up a battlefield with a single ambush (as long as you don't have to reload). Also it's better to give explosives to your sniper if you want to sneak attack with a launcher. And there's a weapon mod that can convert a weapon into doing explosive damage.

I wish there was a reliable way to get mods. I didn't even find an explosive mod until my second playthrough.

The mods that change your damage type are unique and have fixed location. I think the Explosive damage mod is somewhere in a mid to late-game location but I can't remember where. A couple other mods like the one that adds +20 damage but -10% hit chance are also unique.

But yeah, weapon mods should have been easier to get. I can understand merchants not refreshing weapon stock since anything you sell will still be there anyway, but mods are one and done. (which is really dumb to begin with imo. At least make them removable with a capstone perk, or something) Field Stripping weapons for the mods is way too expensive and unreliable, plus as far as I can tell you can't get +Range scopes from field stripping, which is the most important one.

Not that Victory is really any better I guess, but at least he's got personality. I like Lucia and Kwon well enough but they're a bit bland. Lucia moreso than Kwon.

Pizepi's pretty cool, though. Would've liked to recruit her earlier and have her chime in more of the game's events. I'm pretty curious now too what Victory has to say if you recruit him before going to Denver and rescuing Valor.
