:siren:The game is still under NDA until beta release so we can't share non-public details in this thread until then.:siren:

What is Dual Universe?
Dual Universe is a first person based space simulation sandbox MMO in development by the Paris-based game development studio, Novaquark. It was designed to combine elements of Eve Online and Star Citizen, as well as Minecraft, No Man's Sky, and Space Engineers. The game was kickstarted back in 2016 and is now entering beta on August 27, 2020. Backers will get access to the beta one week earlier on August 20, 2020 at 2pm UTC (10am ET).

The game consists of one vast shared solar system that is fully editable with player driven economies, politics, trade and warfare.

For me the game really feels like Space Engineers on a grander scale with some Eve elements. Instead of playing with 30-50 people on a Space Engineers server, you are playing thousands in a single solar system.

Some Key Features
  • Design and Building (Space Ships, Bases, Cities, Space Stations, Airplanes, Whatever): The game uses a combination of functional elements, like engines, wings, etc, and voxels to allow you to build just about whatever you want. You have way more freedom than other building games to create the exact appearance that you want. Import 3d models from out of game using holographic projectors as guides if you like. There is a lot of art and science that goes into creating good looking functional structures. This is a game that actually rewards you for not just building heavily armored cubes as PvP ships.

  • Claiming Territory: There are hundreds of thousands of territories across the solar system that you can claim for yourself or your organization by crafting or buying Territory Control Units (TCU). Territories are broken up into hexes that are approximately 1km across and ownership gives you the ability to control who can build and mine in it. Every territory contains vast amounts of basic resources and the potential for rarer resources. They plan on implementing war for territories in a content patch during the beta. There will also be Sanctuary Moons that you can use a special Sanctuary TCU to claim that are pvp-safe zones, but lack any resources. You can build up there and store your belongings and vessels, even if you are going to be gone from the game for long periods of time, without worrying about it being deleted or destroyed.

  • Industry: Create production lines by linking industries such as metalworking fabricators or chemical refineries. With a large enough setup you could even just input raw resources and output all of the components necessary to create an ship from a blueprint. Using markets or in person trading, you can sell other players components, raw materials, or entire vessels.

  • Open World PVP: There are limited safe zones, such as the area surrounding the starting zone and sanctuary moons. Outside of these safe zones, you are free to PVP. Law enforcement will be left up to players and organizations that fancy themselves pirate hunters. Right now, infantry combat and atmospheric combat are not fully implemented. They are planned features, but only space combat is currently enabled in game. Combat is often done using targeting systems because it often occurs at long distances and at high speeds. You aren't going to have much luck hitting a ship that is moving at 30,000 km/h at a range of 160km if you are trying to do FPS style combat. Instead you use radar to identify ships then command turrets to open fire. If you destroy the enemy ship's core, it will kill all of the crew members on board and you can salvage the wreck or repair it and claim it for yourself. Do to the vast scope of the solar system the chances that you encounter hostile players is not high, but the risk is still there.

  • Fairly Realistic Physics: It is a lot more forgiving than a Kerbal level of physics simulation, but it is still impressive. The cross-section of your ship determines it's aerodynamic properties and if you are using wings for lift, don't try to do an about face mid-flight unless you have a helluva lotta thrust because you will stall and come plummeting to the ground. When you get up into space, you can enter stable orbits around planets or generate more acceleration for an escape trajectory. If you are daring enough you can even use Math! to optimize your vehicles. There is a hard speed limit of 30,000 km/h or 8333m/s in space without a warp drive.

  • LUA Scripting: Build custom cockpit HUDs using LUA and HTML, interactable interfaces or even modify ship behavior and control schemes. The API is more limited in some respects than Space Engineers C# scripting for balance reasons. For example, PVP actions like targeting or firing are restricted and you cannot create remote controlled combat ships or fully automate your industry using LUA scripting. However, you can do some pretty impressive things like add Clickable buttons to your HUD that you can use from your cockpit or while walking around your ship. You can build your own autopilots or even script a poker game if you wanted. In the future you will be able to sell your LUA scripts on the market to other players. For the time being you can sell them directly, but there is no built in code obfuscation to protect them from stealing it or reselling it yet.

  • Politics and Community: If you're into that sort of thing, there is a ton of room for player driven governance and community interactions. There is also a huge potential for corporate espionage stealing ship designs, LUA scripts, and resources location.

Development Roadmap

Should I play?
It is important that you go into this game knowing that it is not yet content complete and it is not completely stable. They have made huge strides in the time that I've played the game, but there is definitely still a lot more work that needs to be done prior to release. If you can't deal with issues cropping up that interrupt your game play, then you should wait longer and not hop in at the beginning of the beta. The game also moves at a much slower pace than games like Space Engineers. Crafting can take a lot of time, especially for large and complex objects. Some of the most complex components can take over two weeks to craft. However, you can drastically reduce these times by training talents and expanding your industry. Traveling to distant planets without warp drives can take hours.

This game also has a pretty serious learning curve. While a lot of the systems, such as mining or building, share common traits with similar games the differences are enough that it is wise to watch the tutorial videos once or use in-game or out-of-game reference materials to learn the finer points to save on a lot of frustration. Currently the player base is fairly friendly and willing to help answer any questions in either the in-game chat or official discord channels. Additionally, the Novaquark support team is very active in the discord and go to great lengths to resolve problems, help players and track bugs.

That being said, the game is mostly playable and can be incredibly fun if you enjoy these kinds of games. I've been testing the game on and off for the past year and a half and I feel like I've already gotten my money's worth of enjoyment from it and I see a ton of potential in it's future.

How to play?
The game uses a subscription model that is planned to be $6.99 USD/month. Like Eve you can purchase subscriptions using in game currency after release.

:siren:You will need to pay for a subscription to participate in the beta unless you bought a supporter pack prior to August 17th or are gifted a beta key from someone who did.:siren:

If you buy a supporter pack (minimum $60 USD) prior to August 17th, then you DO NOT have to pay for a subscription during the entirety of the beta and you get free months (3 for Contributor, 12 for Patron) of play time when the game is released. Each supporter pack comes with 1-3 extra beta keys that can be gifted and the individual who you gift it to will not have to pay for a subscription during the beta either.

:siren:Supporter packs are no longer available. To play the game you will need to purchase a subscription after August 27th, unless you are lucky enough to find someone willing to share an extra key with you.

Wait, a subscription fee for a beta?! Developer's response:

quote:

We know this move is quite unusual. As said before, the changes in the subscription model have been discussed internally for months. We knew that going for a monthly subscription during the Beta might raise some eyebrows. However, among all the alternatives, it seemed like the most reasonable one. Here is why:

Our server infrastructure cost is more or less proportional to the number of players using it.
The budget we have so far is sized to include periodic test sessions with a fairly small community. However, with NDA Lift, easier accessibility to Beta, expectations to see a huge influx of new players and a 24h/7d service (minus maintenance times) with Beta Launch (Yes, it's going to happen, finally! ;)), we have to plan accordingly for success and remain financially viable. We did our best efforts to make the monthly subscription as affordable as possible. Also, having a monthly subscription will help to increase resources on Community Management and Customer Support sooner rather than later.

Playing with Goons
You can be a member of multiple organizations and organizations can be members of other organizations, so feel free to join whatever orgs appeal to your play style or create your own. Below is a list of goon guilds that I have been informed about. To get your group added to the list, shoot me a PM with any info you would like included.

Goon Groups:
  • Wyldy Inappropriate:
Wyld is running the main goon group for the beta called Wyldy Inappropriate and they can be found in their discord at https://discord.gg/MAA8nTD.
  • Clovis Space Solutions:

  • Wildly Unsuccessful Pacifists (WUP):
WUP is for solo goons / small groups that want to play mostly on their own with some shared assets they can use to help getting started. To join, just apply in game by searching for the org name or the tag WUP and let us know you have stairs in your house.

Beginners Guide to Dual Universe
Here is a pretty good guide that covers a lot of the main gameplay loops, although some of it might be outdated by now.
https://s3-eu-west-1.amazonaws.com/static.www.novaquark.com/communication/DU_BG+v1.0.pdf

Getting Started
You start on the planet Alioth at one of 10 districts. Be warned, it will be likely be fairly laggy and expect some FPS drops, especially if you are joining in right at launch. The initial load into the game can take a long time (I had one friend that took over 40 minutes to load the first time) while it builds the voxel database for local constructs and terrain. After that first load, it is much much quicker, especially if you get away from the starting area.

As tempted as you will be to just skip the tutorial and rush out, you need to resist and do at least the first tutorial until you have gone to the Sanctuary moon and placed your Sanctuary Claim Unit. You get some critical items like your Repair tool, Sanctuary Claim Unit, and a starter hovercraft by doing the first tutorial. It is best to go slow during the tutorial and try not to rush too far ahead or it might break.
If you have any problems with your tutorial, use LeftShift + PageDown to skip that section or LeftShift + PageUp to repeat a section.

If you are going to join up with the Wyldly Inappropriate goons then you should see their guide for information about where to settle on the Sanctuary moon. Otherwise, good real estate is often near a market place or one of the shuttles to Alioth. Once you have a good flying plane or space craft, travel time on planets and moons isn't a huge deal.

Once on the Sanctuary moon, you can deploy your speeder to get around quicker. With a bit of ingenuity, you can turn that hovercraft into a plane just by rearranging the parts. Just move all of the atmospheric engines to the rear, rotate the stabilizers horizontally so they become wings, and then right click on the seat and select Autoconfigure -> Flying Construct. Now, just hop in, hold LeftAlt+Space to raise your hover engines to maximum height then pick up some speed, pitch up and zoom above all the trees and mountains. Be careful making sharp turns or slowing too quickly as you may lose altitude swiftly.

At the time of this writing, they had disabled trees and some surface rock collisions because they were loading in too slowly in some cases causing rage inducing accidents. If your speeder becomes damaged, you can make Scrap into your nanopack and use the repair tool to fully repair any damaged elements. Voxels can only be damaged in pvp and will not be damaged in a collision.

If you have the inclination, you should probably head back to Alioth and do the rest of the tutorials. They give a lot of talent points and some give money.

Bugs and Support
This game is still pretty early along in the beta phase and it has a lot of bugs. Nearly all of them are fairly minor and not game breaking, but they can be annoying nonetheless. About 95% of all issues you encounter can be resolved just by relogging. If relogging doesn't fix it, there is an ingame support chat channel that doubles as a global chat where you can ask other players for help. You can also submit a ticket on the Dual Universe website or talk directly to moderators and admins in the official Dual Universe discord channel here https://discord.gg/dualuniverse. They are usually happy to help resolve bugs if they can or direct you to the support page if you need to submit logs or a bug report for the devs to look into the issue.

Tips and Tricks
  • Left Ctrl + Z is autorun. You shoot across the map way faster than just shift sprinting.
  • If you ever need to do the opposite action for your tool, such as removing fuel from a tank or picking up elements, it will always be Left Alt + Left Mouse Button with the tool equipped.
  • Claiming items is a trap. Claimed items can't be used for recipes in your nanopack and will trip you up because it will tell you that you have the proper number of ingredients, but never craft.
  • On Alioth, space begins around 3500m up and your space engines will kick on when you reach <10% atmosphere. You will need enough atmospheric thrust to get through the transition area.
  • When entering atmosphere from space, reduce your speed to <1200 km/h or your elements will take damage from the heat or your ship may explode.
  • Always queue up your Talent points (F2) and have them training. You receive 90 points per minute while actively training or you can stockpile 6 points per minute if not. There is well over 10 years worth of poo poo to train and specialize in.
  • Some good starting talents are Scanner Range, Detector Range, Nanopack Upgrades, Core Unit Upgrades, Primary Container Augmentation and Nanocrafter Efficiency.
  • Don't specialize your talents too early. There are lots of very cheap ones that take only a few minutes to learn and the benefits add up.
  • Talents that increase the speed of crafting don't reflect the speed increase on the time to complete displayed in your nanocrafter or industry recipes. Instead the count down will move a lot quicker and finish sooner than stated.
  • If you are separated from a dynamic construct by less than 4km, you can fetch it to you once every 24hrs by opening your map (F4) then clicking Constructs in the top left and right clicking that construct in the list and selecting Fetch. This is a debug feature that will eventually be removed from the game, but is great if your vehicle is stuck in the air or underground.
  • Right now, dynamic constructs completely stop moving if everyone on board logs off. That means if you are hurtling towards a planet at 30,000km/h, you can Alt-F4 to come to an instant stop. When you log back in, your ship will have 0 velocity. This is a commonly used tactic by people so they don't have to slow down in PvP space, but it is fairly exploity and will likely be removed from the game before long.
  • PvP exists in space at least 500km from any planet or moon. You will get a warning prior to entering PvP space.
  • If your ship controls don't work or you get a Script error when sitting down in it, just right click the seat and select Autoconfigure -> and the type of vehicle Flying/Hover/PvP Seat. This will reset all the lua coding on that object to default and link up any necessary components such as fuel tanks.
  • Right now, players receive a daily login reward of $100,000 per day, so make sure to keep logging in for that.
  • Smaller cores are better for most tasks than larger cores if you can fit everything you need on them.
  • There is currently a bug with blueprints where if the blueprint uses elements that have been renamed or use lua scripts then you cannot place it back down without having new versions of those renamed/lua components. To avoid this, save your blueprints without buttons, seats, an ecu or any renamed elements.

Okay, what features are in the game right now? I'd be interested in giving this ago, but I'm not in the mood to file a chargeback because this turns out to be a 50gig download for what amounts servers of 20 people building dick shaped voxel spaceships that can't even fly.

Pretty much everything listed above is in game and working for the most part unless I specifically mentioned it as not implemented yet. Construct vs Construct PvP is one of the newest additions to the game and without getting too NDA breaky, it has occasional issues with targeting that need to get ironed out before it is really solid. At the moment, you can gather resources, claim territory, buy/sell on the markets, form organizations, travel anywhere in the solar system, build bases/ships/planes/space stations/etc, use the LUA programming, pirate ships, setup industry pipelines, alter the terrain how you like, be a space trucker, etc.

They have about 56,000 people signed up on the forums, but I can't imagine that they are all contributors that are playing the game. They do have about 1500+ people in the discord section that is restricted to players that own the game. There are no individual servers, it is all one world that everyone plays on at the same time. These last few tests the pop hasn't been very high, excluding the stress test they had a little bit ago, because they are about to wipe the server for the beta launch. Most of the people playing lately have been people who are experimenting, learning to play, or saving their construct blueprints. They don't list server stats anywhere, but if I had to guess from my observations there must have been at least a couple hundred just on the starting planet based on the amount of chat and active ships/people I saw.

While the game has been up in Alpha it is typically only up for 96 hours at a time, Thursday through Monday morning then they perform updates the other days. Though they had it up for a couple months at a time back at the beginning of the whole Covid-19 thing. When the beta starts it supposed be up all the time.

If you do signup before the beta, the next play test is this Thursday, Aug 13 at 14:00 UTC until Aug 17 at 14:00 UTC. Depending on how that goes we might get another one before the beta.
https://www.dualthegame.com/en/server-status/

Another caveat is that the game does have a pretty serious learning curve, but after you do something once it starts making sense.

It is essentially an early access game still and I expect it will take awhile for them to iron out all of the issues and add in the rest of the promised features like infantry combat. Most of the core pillars are in place, but like any early access things can get janky sometimes. You will most definitely encounter bugs and server problems that can interrupt your game play. Relogging tends to fix most issues and I've never lost progress to a bug, but I have been stuck out of game for a few hours at a time when I wanted to play due to server issues.

I'm a bit leery of their decision to charge a subscription fee for the beta as that might indicate they are worried about not having enough of a cash runway to make it to launch, but it also gives me a bit of hope that if they are able to become sustainable during beta they will delay launch until the game is truly ready instead of rushing it out the door in a years time.

I was interested in trying this but gently caress them for charging a sub for beta. Am I reading that correctly? If you don't buy one of their early access packages they will charge a monthly fee for you helping them test their game?

You are reading it right. If you don't buy a supporter pack by August 17th, then you stuck paying $6.99 /month for access until release.

If this is a game that you think you would like to support and play throughout the duration of the beta then the supporter pack is totally worth it in my opinion. To me it isn't much different than buying an early access game on Steam and if you go into it with a friend then it is $30/each for roughly a years worth of game time, plus an extra 3 months of game time for one of you after launch.

If you are interested in just giving the game a try, then I'd recommend waiting at least a couple months. Like most beta launches, I expect this is going to be a bit rocky. Give them some time to work out any kinks then pay $7 for a month of play time and see if you like the game.

After beta ends, then you will be able to buy game time using in game currency.

They didn't show any ship collisions, so it most likely wont have any to worry about CLANG. Would be pretty ridiculous to add that in an MMO.

The number of beta invites wasn't really clear on the pledge page, but they did clarify in a post on the forums a little while back that your alpha access will continue through beta and that every beta key is an invite that you can share so you don't need to save one for yourself. So with a sponsor pack you can invite two people.

In previous announcements, it has been said that all our current backers have access to the Alpha phase. It has also been said that all players who already have access in Alpha will keep their access in Beta. Moreover, Beta Keys won’t be real “Keys”: For those having Beta Keys, they will have in fact “Beta invitations” managed from their “My Account” page on the Dual Universe website. They will be able to enter the email address of a friend for each invitation, and the said friend will receive Beta access on the said address (be sure to not misspell the email address!). To make sure there is no more confusion on this topic, here are the different backer packs that have existed since the Kickstarter campaign, and the number of Beta invitations associated with them:

It's not quite Space Engineers or Empyrion where your ship will break into pieces on collisions. For collisions, most of the time the voxel don't end up being damaged and instead they absorb part of the impact depending on the materials used, shape, and thickness then transfer the rest of the damage through the ship into the functional parts like engines. If a functional part becomes too damaged, it becomes inoperable but can still be repaired.

PvP damage is a bit different, but I haven't seen enough of it yet to know how everything is affected and I'm not sure what info is publicly available about that yet to keep up with the NDA. I've definitely seen ships with enough holes punched through the voxels to the point that they look like swiss cheese though.

We also don't have to worry about CLANG striking moving parts, since we don't have unstable moving parts like pistons or rotors and I don't know of any plans to add them in.

Good news friends. They just announced they are giving backers and anyone with a beta invite early access to the beta starting this Thursday, August 20th at 2pm UTC. It looks like invite codes will be given out on or before Aug 20th. NDA is staying active until the full beta launch.

Eager to head out to the unexplored reaches of space and collect rare materials? Want to start your brand new organization before the masses start migrating to the single-shard server? Or perhaps you’re just looking to stockpile your weapons for eventual battle?

Whatever the case may be, you’re welcome to join us starting August 20th at 2pm UTC in-game, with Beta rolling out to non-backers on August 27th.

As a reminder, players who pledged for a pack (say that five times fast) since our Kickstarter will receive the first of their in-game rewards when the Beta launches: the Resurrection Node, and the Sanctuary Territory Unit.

Your friends will also be able to join you prior to the official Beta launch, using your Beta invitation keys that were part of your pledge pack.

Finally, we ask that you please remember to keep to the NDA and keep full disclosure until the Beta launch on August 27th at 11am UTC.

They have said the beta is going to be up 24/7 minus maintenance times. One of the reasons they are charging the subscription fee is to cover the costs of keeping the servers up nonstop. As far as maintenance times goes, they have been doing nightly reboots around 4am ET during the tests that take less than <5 minutes. I imagine that will continue into the beta and then whenever they need to bring it down for patches.

It seems that I am a bronze founder for this way back when it was on kickstarter. I guess I'll finally get to check the game out (unlike most kickstarters).

Pretty sad that i only really paid attention to this game after the founders packs were taken off the market, I love throwing money at games that'll turn out to be a disaster.

I am very excited for this though

Bad games goons have an org - some of us have been playing for a long time.

e:

The game is absolutely chock full of armchair lawyers, ceos, physicists, you name it that quickly reveal themselves to be idiots that you can blow up easily for fun.

I do highly recommend brushing up on your parabolic and kinematic eqs, or at least watch a youtube video that goes over classic motion, to assist your shipbuilding. Being able to plan your torque from adjustor placement and the ability to do a TWR calc will save you tons of anguish.

Bad Games Crew - https://discord.gg/MAA8nTD. Can't wait, the longer the title the harder they fall.

It may not be interracial, but it is black and white.

I added your group to the OP. Let me know if there is any additional info you would like included.

There will be little to say until the NDA is lifted on the 27th.

Forgot to mention I've encountered quite a few people that have tried to use EVE goons' name as qualifiers to speak on subjects. There's a few that "know the mitanni" as well, which usually fall in to the category of "idiots that you can blow up easily for fun"

I've heard "the inside scoop" of the bob story from like 5 different people so far

We have a general info channel, but its very limited, and only speculation is discussed. But for those goons, who purchased one of the pre-purchase packages, and are under NDA, we also have a channel. We just need them to notify us via the NDA Discord Channels in the Dual Universe Discord, and we can let them in...

We also ran a corp during Dual Universe NDA Beta called Wyldly Inappropriate

I dont know if the corp will be named like that for the Open Beta launch on the 27th, but since this game allows for people to be in multiple corps and the generation of federations is fairly simple, i dont think this will be a problem...

Early beta is starting in half an hour for everyone that backed the game at any point prior to August 17th. There is a patch out now, but beta invites have not gone out yet to share with friends. They said they are hoping to get the beta invites out today, but it might not be until tomorrow or the day after if they have problems with their new system. They are putting together a new website for the beta launch on the 27th and the invites are tied together with that.

NDA is still active for one more week until the official beta launch.
