I get that agencies really want their trainess to be hyper-focused, and the results certainly show, but gently caress man. That such a thing is treated like a "perk" is nuts lol.

NGL i've been a pretty stalwart defender of my kpop fandom against a seemingly endless wave of "you know they're really really really exploited, right?" haters, but uh, that's what abusive spouses do. i do not enjoy this tidbit of information one bit.

It varies a lot on the company, and overall the industry is improving. Most of the info is based off of people who have left the industry or sometimes groups have had the chance to be a bit more candid. So it'll come up rarely on shows and stuff, and the older groups definitely were more controlled/locked down. You can notice it sometimes when watching an appearance where an older gen member is hosting a show and they have a new gen group on and one of those things comes up. I think a big contributor has been the shift from idols being an out-of-reach stage persona kept semi-hidden changing to a more personal/exposed sort of thing. Like all the various non-release non-broadcast interaction stuff is where a big shift is towards, and to facilitate that you can see a lot of improvements occurring. I think the shift towards idols being more involved/credited with the various parts production helps too, as that moves them towards 'artist' and away from 'replaceable face' both for companies and fans. It is far from perfect, and there are some definitely exploitative practices. In some cases extremely exploitative. I'd say the important piece of info to keep in mind is that basically any entertainment industry in every country has those same or similar issues (easy example, everything that has happened to brittney spears). The best that you can really do is not ignore the issues and press for better treatment when you get the chance. Its sort of a specific example of a more general issue of "do you stay and try to improve a bad situation or leave and seek a good one". I think its perfectly fine to support groups you like while condemning industry/company practices that are bad.

Always good to remember that being an idol is different from being a regular celebrity, and trainees tend to know what they're getting into re: the weird arbitrary rules and restrictions around your public persona and tbh even private one, since the whole schtick is basically watching the lives of these performers. Most of how the idol industry works is like some crazy big secret or reveal, just a known quantity bc it gets talked about a lot by the idols themselves on variety or reality tv. But there are some actual hosed up practices behind the scenes in the industry, for sure, though not necessarily all encompassing and usually just instances of awful people/companies. The industry as a whole was pretty ghastly for a while, there, but things have changed a lot since even the 2nd gen. It's still a hosed up industry, for sure, but unfortunately not unique in that regard-- the entertainment industry is hosed and abusive in every drat country. tbh the only kpop docu I can think of that is less surface level is 9 Muses of Star Empire, which is interesting but not a very enjoyable watch. They're one of the more notoriously exploitative companies when it comes to mistreatment of idols.

Also, timestamped is a group of idols from diff companies who end up talking about the diff phone rules they all had. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QMNs8Fop7ys&t=589s I can try and think of other good clips from shows of idols talking about industry poo poo, ranging from casual conversations, to serious ones, to silly stories about escaping your managers to go to an amusement park https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6OyiIf8IOkU

Ive got their 10th music show win. Congrats to them They're the reason I asked about show win relevance, lol. Also read on twitter that it's a new record for a debut track too Eleven is cool, but I've been listening to Take It a lot. Eleven is really loving good, but IVE has the added bonuses of being a new Starship group and having two former IZ*ONE members in it, so the hype for them has been huge. Glad they keep winning tho

Yujin and Wonyoung definitely helped build initial interest in IVE, but Starship has been masterful at promoting the whole group and other individual members as well. Leeseo lucked into their first viral moment, and lately I've been seeing scuttlebutt that Rei is currently the most popular member? But yeah, Korea loves that song, and it's probably as close to a flawless launch as you're going to see.
