https://youtu.be/VOmIplFAGeg

Last song on the EP. Beat’s great, music video is really cool and choreography focused. Lyrics though… I thought they did a good job avoiding any sort of sexuality in the first three songs and videos but it turns out they were just saving it all for this track. It feels out of place at best and kinda sleazy at worst.

Gonna keep listening to the others on repeat thought, Hype Boy is still burrowed into my head.

It’s weird because the Hangul doesn’t translate to what they wrote for the English captions. That doesn’t make it any better but they still went out of their way to make it more sexual than the Korean lyrics.

I still don’t know a whole lot about the Korean music industry, but is it possible these songs were written not just with an eye towards breaking into the western market but also the possibility of being sung by western acts as well? I noticed for all of the songs on this EP that the translations were not just direct translations but translations that fit right into the songs so they could be sung as lyrics themselves. That would make it trivially easy to have someone else sing these same songs in English. Obviously with the success they’ve been having that doesn’t really seem necessary but it would explain why the lyrics are so different from the translations and possibly why the tone of those English lyrics is so off. Maybe they assumed that American listeners just really want innuendo in their pop music.

Yeah it is entirely possible they just bought the song from a western writer and changed the Korean lyrics to be less gross, but still used the English lyrics they were given instead of translating themselves.

BUT the very concept of the song even at face value has sexual undertones in either language.

They got 14-16 year olds doing sexual concepts now with these new groups. Doesn’t feel like they give too much of a poo poo anymore.

Based on people's comments I was expecting it the be quite a bit worse than it was? Like we've seen significantly more sexual lyrics out of young kpop groups before. Probably what is throwing people off more is that there is a Korean wordplay going on with making music/cds (hence all the cds in the background for no reason) that isn't that common in english (similar in a way to letting a track bake/cook longer). Agreed that you can read it in a more sexual way and could have used another pass, but I sort of wonder if that is also influenced by the more R&B styling of the track and associations we have with that music.

Generally when you're translating stuff a direct translation loses a lot of meaning. Its one of the reasons that machine translations feel so "off", both languages have sort of additional meaning with words/phrases that a direct translation doesn't capture well. Add in slang, word-play, and references and its easy to not capture any of the original meaning. With music there is often also wanting the words to still flow close to the music or how it sounds in the original language.

For example, take wonho's open mind. The phrase "keep an open mind" is essentially asking a girl to "netflix and chill". Knowing that pushes the explicitness of that track a lot higher than it otherwise is to an english audience (its still pretty high).

Sneakers sounds pretty close to debut and icy era Itzy imo. Definitely fits their teen pop concept, even if it doesn’t have the edge that some of their other singles did it fits right into their greater discography.

I think some people are blowing things out of proportion (“Lookie at my cookie” is not innuendo, it just rhymes) but also the people trying to say it’s all completely innocent are being pretty dense. That usage of “thirsty” is pretty telling.

Oppa is just an honorific used by females to address older males but has been used in more of a “daddy” way to the point that Blackpink had to beg for their debut to be retitled because they hated it. The men running the industry know exactly what they’re doing and so do the girls lol. Aegyo has a lot of the same undertones historically.

But this is nothing new or unique, even this year as pointed out w Lapillus or even Ive with the Love Dive dancing in the MV that was selectively cut and changed for stage performances to just barely skate around the fact that most of them are so young.

All that said, Korean culture views the very idea of “sexy” differently than we do when it comes to performances, but just like with the Japanese idol culture that K-pop borrows heavily from, there’s an obvious perversion on both sides of the industry in the fans and people making the decisions of what these young people do.

Yeah, and? Everyone does a tiktok challenge now, whether they have complex choreo or simple point moves. Itzy has done multiple already.

ZypherIM

"I want to see what she's in love with."

I mean, doing a tiktok challenge is just nabbing a chunk of choreo (historically called "point move" or variations on that) that they throw into a short tiktok and asks fans to try it and upload it. Its not any different from groups showing off a couple seconds of choreo on any random show they're promoting on. Just its on an internet site and its easy for fans to do a version and have interaction there.

You can't say that Chungha is a slouch in her choreo and she has tiktok challenges for a *bunch* of her stuff. I'm sure you could dig up listings for like Ateez and other heavy choreo boy groups and find the same.

SHINee's back

Kpop choreo and point moves have been going viral since Tell Me. It's just easier now and has more fan interaction with the rise of things like Tiktok.

Sneakers, whether you love or hate it, is an Itzy rear end Itzy song. They didn't change poo poo just for Tiktok.

e: ^^ yeah this

Centusin

I think that view count is just normal for a big kpop groups challenge anyway? Because it just shows up on people's for you pages over and over and the number goes up. Nayeon's Pop was released a bit over a month ago and has over a million videos made using the song, compared to 25k made using Sneakers. The Sneakers dance would still need to actually go viral to get anywhere near Nayeon's numbers. Another example of a properly viral one from earlier in the year is Jessi's Zoom which has over 4 million videos made using the song.

K-pop choreo point moves are just naturally perfect things for TikTok because people like watching them and then making them. People in Korea were probably recording VHS' of themselves dancing to H.O.T's Candy back in 1996. Even Twice's TT would be considered to be made for TikTok now because it has a simple point move that could be incorporated into lots of videos.

Anyway the Hybe Game Caterers episodes were alright, also you should be watching Earth Arcade if you're a fan of IVE, Oh My Girl or Lee Young Ji

My point is that the song is a bit jarring because the chorus was tailor made to do a tiktok challenge. It’s been happening all over in pop even here where artists are crafting songs around the perfect 15 seconds for tiktok.

This whole album is loving fire.

Closer, Mood Lamp, Summer Night, Paper Plane, Seventeen and Freedom certified bops. Villain a lowkey banger. You Better Run fuckin goes places, and Lucky Like That is maybe the only song I don't vibe with entire-- but it's still p good til I get to that guitar riff.
