What are some other songs/artists like (G)I-DLE's Lion? That song seems so much darker and heavy in tone than other K-pop and even their other stuff. The closest I've found is their other song Oh My God but that's a lot more Latin music influenced. Red Velvet's Psycho has some similarities but obviously a lot more poppy.

had this song on play a bit today and if I'm hearing right it's in Eb lydian which is loving wild for a pop song. Kpop is progressing quickly into doing way more interesting things musically while keeping the song structure simple and catchy.

Bon Bon Chocolat was such a killer debut for them. The first 6 seconds sound like hyper pop sounds I would have previously imagined Kpop to be, but then that bass drop and vocal hit for the verse just smacks.

She has one of the best voices in Kpop no doubt. She can support her voice across the full range, which is not easy or common in pop music as a whole. Her cover of Shallow is really great (though I wish we had a full acoustic version like the beginning of the video).

They're all so talented and have some great songs (Playing With Fire, Forever Young, As if it's Your Last, Kill This Love, Lovesick Girls are my favorites) but their company and writer/producer are definitely holding them back. They're giving them boring and predictable material and mostly sticking to the strictest formula of any major kpop group. I say "holding them back" despite their meteoric international success obviously.

K-pop gives video games a run for their money re: awful comments sections on social media. The kids (and adults) who engage with that stuff are marketed to so heavily to take ownership in their groups successes and it breeds toxic behavior across the internet. Best to just never read the comments anywhere ever.

K-pop also leans hard into parasocial relationships which only makes it all worse.

Yeah I think JYP will be forced to give Twice anything they demand in a contract extension because they’re still the highest selling girl group of all time (and the only other girl group signed to a major US label along with Blackpink). If any of them want to retire or move on I think they all stop though, I think they only stay if they are still together as 9. We’ll see how this year goes because they’re definitely entering a new phase of their career professionally and artistically. I think they’ll continue to grow internationally but have peaked in Korea, which probably has something to do with their evolution as well.

Yeah I love this EP. Hwaa is such a great single and I love they went with that because it’s so different than what any other groups are doing. A much more traditional sound (aside from the clave beat) and no English. I love the melodic callbacks to Hann in this and Hann(Alone). Soyeon’s opening vocals are her strongest yet and her flow at the end of her rap verse is just so intricate and different rhythmically. Soojin also went hard with her vocals where she usually stays reserved and I loved hearing Miyeon on a quieter part instead of just chorus lines. Yuqi and Minnie killed as always too. The chorus is so simple but effective because it’s sophisticated harmonically with the melody and chords. Soyeon is a really smart composer.

The video is insane too, such nice visuals and the winter to a cleansing spring fire motif is done so well. The lighting is especially nice throughout and really gets that bright winter sun vibe without being harsh on the girls skin. Really impressive. I love the choreo too, very fitting to the song and again unique from other groups.

Where is Love and Dahlia are also standouts to me, either of those could have been a single. Soyeon’s rap on Lost is also killer.

And about Shuhua, from what they’ve said Soyeon works with the group to write and distribute lines and Shuhua isn’t as comfortable for a variety of reasons and prefers having less lines. It’s not a situation where she’s just forced to stay in the back or given lines she’s not comfortable with like Momo being forced to sing in that nasally head voice instead of her comfortable register where she’s much more confident. I do wish Shu sang more because she has a nice neutral voice to contrast all the unique voices in the group but if she’s comfortable in her role then that’s for the best.

First time a 4th gen group has debuted at #1 on Melon too drat!

Oh and Dreamcatcher confirmed the release of their 6th mini on the 26th :woop: my favorite two groups giving new stuff two weeks apart is a great start to the year.

Speaking of gimmicks, I'm curious what SM does with Aespa going forward because they've become popular enough already without the avatar thing really being a factor and I wonder if they abandon it other than as a visual gimmick in socials and videos. I think they were overly ambitious in the way they described them all along but the incorporation so far has been just enough to do some world building for their concept without feeling like it was being forced.

Queendom took me from just watching it because I love Idle to being a huge Mamamoo fan and being happy they won in the end. It also made Wheein probably my favorite performer in all of Kpop. Idle raised the bar from week one on everyone though and made all the other groups up their game, and Lion/Put it Straight are the most memorable stages looking back, but it was great to see Mamamoo get the much deserved respect from the win.

Idle kinda blew up from the start with Latata and Queendom definitely vaulted them up to a top group, making their next comeback sell like 3x more, but Mamamoo had been steady grinding for so long and are so crazy talented I'm glad they won in the end. I don't follow the shows or voting systems at all though, I'm just speaking purely from how I felt about the outcome.

That's one of the things I expect western labels to adapt because it's a lot cheaper to produce a mini/ep and you can have new material to market every year (or even faster) instead of every few years. Just dumping all the full album cost into promo and a dope video for a big single and throwing in a few b sides seems like a smarter move given the way music is consumed these days.

The idea of an album as a whole is probably going to fade out because of streaming and the ease of access to production these days. Before you'd try to record as much as you could when you got into a studio to make the most of that investment, but now that's much more accessible to artists at every level so they can make music on a more open schedule. I have most of the exact software and samples these producers are using on my macbook, the only real difference in the studios they record and my office is the microphones and sound isolation, and I could get 95% of the way there with a small investment and transforming a closet.

Another live performance of Hwaa too

These live shows are getting weirder with the cameras though, they obviously do two takes with a close up camera in their face that's really jarring when it immediately cuts to a wide angle and there's no camera on stage lol.
