At least for me, some of the meme jokes were a bit cringey (much as I dislike that phrase) but I still found them funny in a huff-and-roll-your-eyes way if nothing else, including Wake's full name.

However, I was absolutely unprepared for the 'none pizza with left beef' joke even though I'd seen someone mention it being in there and I didn't even know what to think of it, especially given the context where it shows up. But it is also one of the ones that, unless you already know the meme, wouldn't stick out except that the phrasing in context is maybe a little weird (the 'I studied the blade' joke in Gideon was similarly handled, imo).

I hate that I know this, but if we're only at the mermaid AU stage, it's not that weird yet.

This is my first time. When should we start to worry? When the walls start growing teeth? When the tables grow hair on their legs? When the skeletal servitors shamble in just too spritely a fashion?

I'm formulating some guesses about Nona having to do with Harrow's last name being Nonagesimus and a theme of splitting apart would jive with what happened in the story so far anyway, and maybe Nona is the kid from the epilogue? This is complete speculation, of course.

I'm going to have to make some more room on my lesbian scifi/fantasy bookshelf now that this is (at least??) four books, and I am very cool with that.

Do we get Hark the Ninth and Gesimus the Ninth at some point too?

Now a 6 book trilogy.

Honestly I'm still trying to decide about picking up paperback copies for the extra stuff. I've just never bought two versions of the same book like this before lol

I just have the hardcovers right now, but I've got the black-edged Gideon and white-edged Harrow and I'm tempted to find a black-edged Harrow (I assume they did it for Harrow too?) just for the aesthetic. Knowing there's extra stuff in the paperbacks/ebooks makes this even more complicated.

Why do they have to use this absurd sanitised language instead of just saying 'there was a sex creep who made other contributors uncomfortable, too many people expressed displeasure so we booted the weirdo'?

If that is even what happened, it's 11.50 and I couldn't slog to the end of that blending of corporate press release and Oprah interview.

I don't care too much to read more into it than I already have, but it seems more like the person being called a creep is only guilty of writing the same sort of 'problematic' fanfic that Muir herself wrote in the past, and for which she was harassed off the internet/to the point of suicidal ideation (by the same sort of purity culture assholes coming after this person).

Thant's my impression from a 5-minute skim of that post and thread at least.

Yeah, I follow a few dozen authors/editors on twitter to keep up with book news, and it's pretty common that I'll think a book has been out for months already when it doesn't actually come out until, say, next year. All because they'll be (very vaguely) talking about it for such a long time after they all got ARCs so early. I'm actually surprised it doesn't look like Nona has any pre-order listings up yet since they've got ARCs going out.

(The only person I've known irl who regularly got ARCs worked at a bookstore, and I think libraries/librarians might get them too in addition to book industry/prominent blogger types.)

I think what makes the second-person narration in Harrow work is that it's pretty obviously a character talking "to" Harrow (I'm tempted to call it "second person limited" because I can't really find any other way of describing it). It's the same as the second-person narration in The Fifth Season (Broken Earth Trilogy) by Jemisin -- it's a character speaking to/about another character. It's not an (omniscient second person?) narrator talking to you, the reader, like in the aforementioned cheesy porn stories.

I wonder if the reason people bounce off of second person so hard (or think they will) is because they're expecting/reading it as "omniscient second person" even when it's actually "second person limited" (or whatever you'd call those if there's a better terminology for it). Idk, I'm just really fascinated by how hard people react to it as a narrative device!

The pre-order listings all say September 13, 2022 (at least for the US)!

Oh man, I hope there's a pin. I really like the tiny collection of Tor pre-order pins I've got going (it's just 3 so far).

So, Harrow spoiler, right: I don't want to alarm anyone but a third of Commander Wake's appears to be an Eminem lyric.

Also she is very angry about necromancy indeed, blames what I'm going to guess was all the people who died before the Resurrection on God and also impregnated herself with Gideon the Ninth and is apparently close to Gideon the First and now I don't know what.

The explanations for her full name (I got this off a fan wiki but I've seen other people lay out the same things) are:

"John's nickname for Commander Wake is "Wake Me Up Inside," which references a popular real-world song "Bring Me to Life" by the band Evanescence.
The first part of Wake's name, "Awake Remembrance of These Valiant Dead" comes from a piece of dialogue by the Bishop of Ely in Act I, Sc 2 of the Shakespeare play Henry V.
The middle of Wake's name, "Kia Hua Ko Te Pai" means "Let goodness flourish" and is a Te Reo line from Aotearoa (New Zealand)'s national anthem, "E Ihowā Atua".
The ending of Wake's name, "Snap Back to Reality Oops There Goes Gravity," is a line from real-world rapper Eminem's song "Lose Yourself" from 2002."
