I kinda forgot about the lawnmower bit and the fact the audio didn't seem to line up right led to me just thinking "these people are loving insane" which maybe isn't too bad for the uninformed audience to reach as a conclusion? I figured it out a moment later.

I liked Silver getting too excited because when Brodie clocked him, it did a good job of showing what a ruthless rear end in a top hat Brodie is. I like Uno as the put upon middle manager a lot, I liked him stumbling around in shock when the babyfaces sent Dark Order packing, because Uno's awkwardness contrasts against both his own partner, Grayson and his boss, Brodie and it makes them look more cool and dangerous. The lawnmowers landed with a thud. Also there was a really nice looking car there for some reason? Seems like maybe Uno flubbed his promo because he didn't even mention it.
He said it first I think, like "Stu bought a drat fine vehicle" then they immediately show the lawnmowers THEN the car then the mowers again

It was kind of really messy

I liked the coffin gag anyway, that played with usual heel expectations well

It feels like we're doing it because MJF's been the number one contender for forever because MJF is a very protected wrestler and he's had the best record for so long that they just gotta do it. They gave the feud some juice with MJF clonking Moxley with the belt during his match with Darby, but they haven't really focused in on that as much as I thought they would. MJF's political gimmick, Smart Mark, the Paradigm Shift being banned, it's all fun but it's all complete fluff.

It's in a space where I completely understand all the criticism, but I also think the feud has been pretty enjoyable throughout? It's suboptimal, not bad.

I think there's been the seeds of what could have been a serious, straightforward feud — MJF as the young guy with an inflated ego who sees himself as a Serious Wrestler and the actual embodiment of what AEW was supposed to represent, Moxley as the wily vet who makes clear that he's not just a hardcore brawler. A part of me wonders if they're not purely going in that direction because Moxley is going to retain, and they don't really feel the need to sell MJF as a serious threat before it's actually his time to ascend to the top of the card.

To be absolute clear, it's the furthest thing from bad TV. MJF's delivery is as good as ever and Moxley's side of the fued is pretty darn good, he's just outwitting MJF constantly, which is great, because it's like, wow, your babyfaces are allowed to be smart. What a loving concept. I'm just so used to these two knocking it out of the park with almost everything they do that this weird situation where it doesn't feel like a properly built, invested world title feud has caught me off guard.

It was kinda weird seeing MJF portray Moxley as this junkyard dog who can only do brawls on the outside and can't get it done in the ring when two of his title defenses came with submissions. Maybe that's the point, so when MJF gets choked, GSPed and then choked some more, it'll be like "well, what'd you expect, dude?"

Austin never worried about consequences because he knew he was making Vince money. Vince knew it too which is why he didn't outright fire Austin and we never saw him again. Vince's plight was to keep Austin from being the champion and face of his company because he found Austin embarrassing.

Moxley isn't trying to prove anything to anyone but himself which is why he takes on the challenges he does.

Dynathoughts

WOW, there is a CROWD in this building.

Still no Excalibur. Jericho coming out on commentary. Crowd sings Judas. One dork with his nose hanging out

1) gauntlet match. Bucks vs Nightmares start. Everyone seems excited and up on their game. Some weird sound issues going on. Dustin looks a bit blown up, and a couple of early bits were artificial, but the energy carried it. Bucks win, and Best Friends come out. Trent has such great explosive energy. Match is a little slow to begin with. I enjoy that AEW lets faces fight faces. Fun mini-match, but the energy is just starting to dip. Loads of fun chaotic spots. Wait, Hangman interference? Wow, he looks ILL. Clever booking to avoid Bucks / FTR without making either look weak. FTR in, basically, Ribeira jackets is amazing. I think this match starts during a break. WOW is this sound mix pure dogshit. Match is pretty good fun from the start. Best Friends and FTR have intersecting styles, and we get some spots where Trent is clearly working New Japan Strong Style. Ending seemed to come from nowhere

Bit of a nothing Darby video

2) Lance Archer vs Sean Maluta. Crowd are super into Archer. I love how energetic Archer's squashes are. They need to give him so much more.

Jake brags on Lance. Team Taz come out. Allin attacks Ricky Starks. Jake can BARELY control Lance. Good stuff.

MJF on his way out, bullying Lee Johnson on his way

Thunder Rosa promo. Weird to hear Billy Corgan here. Decent package.

It feels like there's less content tonight than last week.

Mox/MJF contract signing. MJF sounds like he's on helium. Sound mix is messed up. I may have to watch this bit on youtube later. Great segment, Mox does a great line in Bugs Bunny.

Okay, I'd like another match please.

Or a P&P promo, that's cool too.

3) New Jersey Connection and Brian Pillman and Griff Garrison vs Butcher and Blade and LUCHA BROS, MEXI-KINGS. Griff Garrison starts off HOT. lots of fun chaos to start. I'm glad they're not making the face team look like jobbers even if the result is in no doubt. Fenix headscissoring Pentagon into Janela was superb. I will continue to be amazed by Sonny's splits drop. Janela takes a piledriver on the apron. Pillman Jr looking pretty impressive in a territories babyface way. Butcher looking impressive in a "toughest guy in the worst bar in town" way.

Dark Order celebration. Dark Order coffin dancers! Six lawnmowers! Alan Angels in a tie! They are such utter goofs. Love it. Brodie dodging the John Silver high five was great. Referencing the December main event was great. Super fired up promo from Mr Brodie. Loved the bit where Colt thought was Brodie was talking about him but it was Anna Jay. Oh, and Dustin or Scorpio as first feud, that's probably smart.

Matt Cardona still produces "wait, who is this?" reactions in me.

Dasha interviews Hangman for four seconds before the Bucks turned up. The broken mirror is a nice visual.

4) Big Swole vs Penelope Ford and Rebel? Huh, thought Britt was in this match. Bit chaotic, but pretty good fun. Love Twink Sabian's outfit. Quick win for Swole. Was hoping for more but this is about what I was expecting.

Anna comes out to recruit Tay Conti. That's awesome. JR, just stop talking about women.

Sammy doing cue cards. Not sure about the Hit Me Up one.

5) Sammy Guevara vs Matt Hardy. Golly, they have not left any time for this match. This is wild. The "through a table with an offensive move" rule is interesting, as it lets us have crazy Sammy moments on picture in picture and flying nothings through tables. Special table with a chair under it? Very decisive win for Sammy. For a short match this was very good.

And then Orange comes out and just MURKS Jericho. drat. The Cassidy turn of speed is my favourite thing in wrestling right now.

Overall... this was a weird show. Not that much wrestling, very promo and angle heavy. Lots announced, but the in-ring was good rather than great. On the other hand, a crowd really pumped some energy in. Hoping next week's go home knocks it out of the park.

Moxley is Austin in the sense that he's unconstrained and is going to do what he wants, but his AEW presentation has always been a lot more trickster than that. He's going to laugh while you beat him up because he knows it makes you mad. He's going to sneak extra pages in the contract because he knows you won't read it. He's going to wear an eyepatch long past the point where he needs to because he knows it makes you underestimate him. That's a pretty great character, and it's who he's long been in AEW.

Ok full Dynamite thoughts:

- I like how MJF is just writing Mox off by his reputation as a garbage brawler and completely missing all the work he's done since leaving WWE on his grappling. It totally fits his character that he'd overlook that and it'll make it all the sweeter when Mox chokes the air from his lungs. Also we got New Jack and Onita named on TNT in 2020 and that was loving wild

- Lawnmowers aside the Dark Order celebration was great. I loved how even though the focus was on Brodie everyone got a chance to show a bit of character. I especially loved John Silver whiffing on the high five (there's always loving something!). The run-ins were mostly fine but it was a bit weird how Scorp was just there as well cause they've never hinted at any real kind of bond for him with Cody up till now. Just felt like a bit of an awkward smush in cause they want to give him a push. Love love LOVE that Tay Conti's getting recruited though, so glad they're not ignoring her potential.

- I only know Eddie Kingston by his three Dynamite appearances but I have no idea how we're expected to boo this man cause I already love him to pieces. Guy was wearing a drat BLM T-shirt on national TV for gently caress sake.

- Springing a Casino Battle Royale on us with just two weeks notice was another really awkward bit. Feels like it woulda made way more sense to have Ricky/Darby and Sammy/Matt on the PPV. Great to see Archer again though and the Archer/Cage tease had me all kinds of hype.

- The Elite breakup was sad but inevitable. Poor Hangman :smith:

- I hope they have Thunder Rosa in person for next week's Dynamite. I'm sure the match with Shida will be great but the build is just not there.

- Way too many promos this week. Even though they were all good it was just a bit too much. I get the impression a lot of the All Out card has been rushed last minute so they're having to force all the story bits in now rather than being able to spread it out over the last couple of months

Still a lot to like here though. The gauntlet match actually was logical and not just a bunch of teams fighting in succession, which is somewhat rare in my experience. Dark Order is always good. OC transforming into the goddamn flash was exceptional.

MJF needed a few more victories to build him up for this match. I can only remember him beating Jungle Boy over the last few months. They probably should have had him go over Luchasaurus, Matt and Darby in order to establish him further as an in ring threat.

The tag gauntlet match was really good, and having Hangman take out the Bucks before they even made it to FTR was a nice way to put a twist on something we all expected. I was still pulling for Best Friends!!

Something definitely went long during the show - either the gauntlet match or MJF and Mox, because the main event was super rushed and most of the good stuff was during the commercial break.

That said, excellent show overall. The Casino Battle Royale (which I pronounce like Tony and Eddie Kingston do, aka the correct way) should be pretty amazing considering the level of talent they have right now.

Two thoughts:

1) AEW missed a huge cross-promotion opportunity in not having Mr. Brodie Lee buy BAD BOY MOWERS, which would be truly Florida.

2) I hope Mox does every possible variation of DDT he can think of, but never does the Paradigm Shift.

Okay a third: Death Rider is a better name.
