I have no idea how deGrom hasn't murdered someone. Aside from Mike Trout, I can't think of someone whose talent is so routinely wasted. (I have a feeling Tatis is going to run along the same lines for a long, long while, if the Padres are any indication.)

edit: (and machado I suppose, since even the two of them together with clevinger can't beat the Dodgers, I'm pretty sure.)

lol they traded away a generational talent and drove the team into the gutter just to save the billionaire owner a little money

That billionaire also owns Liverpool FC btw, one of the most valuable soccer clubs in the world (who just won the Premier League)

can you piece it together now?

If the alternative is a .400 winning percentage, a barren farm system and less money to spend in future seasons then... Yes, it kinda is? Red sox wouldn't be a winning team this year with Mookie, and Verdugo is off to a great start in Boston.

In fairness to the Red Sox (I know, I know), this has been their approach. Go way over the cap, reset, then spend again. The fact that there were ways they could've done that without trading Mookie (like not splashing 50 million a season on Eovaldi and Sale) is why the Mookie trade was more about FSG not wanting to have anyone on the books for greater than 10 years than tax concerns, but that's harder to sell to the fans I guess so instead it's that dastardly luxury tax's fault.

Regardless that tweet celebrating the reset was dumb as gently caress.

Again, Henry owns two of the what, top-20 most valuable sports franchises in the world?

Having that as a strategy is one thing (that I still disagree with but whatever), spiking the football on Twitter that you spent less of a billionaire's money is another.

And they don't run either club like they have an unlimited money spigot, just look at what Liverpool's done (or hasn't) in the transfer market this window.

Kendall Williams is a pretty interesting prospect. He's 6'6 and young as hell. Borderling top 10 Jays prospect coming into the season and I'm surprised the Jays were ok with trading someone like that, but I guess they've decided to accelerate the timeline.

It's not like they've given away a generational talent for money before

I'll have to check on that though in case I'm remembering wrong

e: regarding luxury tax, they should make the tax go to the rest of the players in the league split evenly :colbert: Instead of just putting it on the other owners' pockets

I thought I posted this earlier. I am not sure where that post ended up!

I wonder if they assume that with the core developing for another year means that they should be contending for a playoff spot next year.

Also, the Jays designate Vogelbach, Drury, and Gaviglio for assignment. I just looked, and Drury has a -1.1 WAR in 49 PA. I am impressed with that number.

Was gonna say, can you imagine how much even a couple hundred extra bucks would mean to a minor leaguer vs. someone on the major league minimum

I guess split it evenly among all the pros and give the major leaguers a chance for the good PR of kicking it down the ladder or to some charity etc.

Yeah that's the new denialism. Anyone who gets covid and dies isn't actually killed by covid if they've ever had the sniffles before

e: vvv I see a lot of "oh they were immunocrompromised so they were susceptible to anything, covid isn't that big a deal" kind of stuff too

The new meme going around is that 94% of SO-CALLED COVID DEATHS are from other causes, like heart failure (caused by COVID), pneumonia (caused by COVID) etc. This is because of how death certificates are written up -- the immediate cause of death (heart failure) is listed as the cause of death, although the conditions that led to the immediate cause (COVID) are also listed. In other news, 99% of people who died "falling off of buildings" were actually killed by completely separate conditions, like internal bleeding, or skull fractures
