The gently caress is a vtuber?
It's an anime that you can watch play games, sing, chat, whatever. And also it's a real person, they just have an anime mask on. And they're usually streamers. So it's not really anime I guess.

Like that Kizuna Ai girl?
Exactly like Kizuna Ai.

Who else is there?
There's two major vtuber agencies, along with countless other smaller groups and independent vtubers.

Hololive/Holostars
Great streamer talent, but management can't go a month without shoving its foot up its own rear end in scandal. Theoretically a group of idols, but they don't really act the part. Does mean they can all sing very well though. Hololive are the girls, Holostars are the boys.

Names you might recognise: Shirakami Fubuki, Inugami Korone, Kiryu Coco, Usada Pekora

Nijisanji
Absolutely massive group of vtubers that bills itself as a variety agency rather than just idols. There's probably one that you would like.

Names you might recognise: I dunno there's like a billion of them. The ones I follow are Dola, Nui, Ange, Kanae and Hana.

Others
Seriously anyone can be a vtuber.

Names you might recognise: Pikamee

I don't speak Japanese.
There's a ton of channels dedicated to translating vtuber clips to English.

I don't speak Japanese and I want to watch the stream live.
Plenty of vtubers are bilingual like Coco and Pikamee. The Indonesian branches of both Hololive and Nijisanji are pretty much all trilingual. And there's a small but growing English vtuber scene, mostly on Twitch. Go check em out.

Hey I think I recognise this voice, they're also-
- Don't talk about it without using spoiler tags.
- Don't have extended discussions about their past identities or go digging up info trying to doxx them/theorizing who they could be.
- If big news stories like Aloe drop then it's fine to discuss in the context of the situation but don't name/link stuff.

Edit: Hololive now has an EN division! They're all very cool and good starting points!
Amelia
Ina
Gura
Kiara
Mori

MOD EDIT: Mentions and discussion of V-tuber's previous identities should be spoiler tagged and not be extended discussions. This thread should not read like a redacted CIA document. Also, don't go trying to theorize/dig up info on who these V-tubers might be, that's just creepy behavior.

Recommend me some channels that translate clips
Here's a handy collated list from a translator in the vtuber community.

Writeup by a goon if you prefer:

Brunom1 posted:

Well, that took a lot longer than I expected (I didn't think I had so many translators tagged), but my list is done. I've mostly focused on pointing out the channels that I consider good or above, but I made sure to include regular speed subbers that are on the better side of things. As noted in my previous post, CMT does decent (nothing stellar) work from a TL-standpoint and their biggest issues are ethics-related. If you wanna keep watching their clips, there are far worse channels to follow.

I made sure to point out channels that focus on specific girls. As I mentioned before, those often tend to be trustworthy and the ones listed at the end of the list are at the top of the game.

And, of course, this list is in no ways complete, as there are plenty of new and/or obscure channels that I find every week.

  • ShabbySubz: tends to focus on Marine and Coco, but has done other talents. Does his research for references and owns up to (uncommon, as far as I’ve seen) mistakes when they happen. Seems good overall.
  • michaeL: found him recently, and he's been focusing on Pekora lately (especially her Xenoblade playthrough). Haven't seen a lot of his lengthy videos, but, so far, the TL seems good overall.
  • Jshay: primary focus on Korone and Okayu. Does good work, updates regularly, and videos are often of decent length.
  • Felix172: Coco only. English is his second language, but he has a good grasp on JP. If you can forgive rare-ish grammar mistakes or turns of phrases, he does good work.
  • TeatimeUK subs: preference for the Holohouse girls (Coco, Kanata, Suisei), but sometimes does others. Posts are somewhat inconsistent, but his work is always solid. Highly recommended.
  • Kiriku Translation: a recurring figure with no particular focus. Is Japanese, and his grasp of EN isn’t flawless, but his work is overall good.
  • VTube Tengoku: speed subber, but the better kind. Has been around for a long time and never struck me as doing anything particularly egregious. No problems here.
  • Dran Ch: no particular focus. Puts videos out regularly and the TL always struck me as being good. Per his description, JP is around N2-N3 level and is ESL, so mistakes might crop up, but they’re not common at all.
  • Sushi: Speed subber, though his clips are on the shorter side. Is Japanese. Good overall.
  • Maple Leaf Translations: new-ish translator that started a month ago who seems to focus on Gen 5 girls – especially Nene. Haven’t seen much, but as far as I can tell, everything’s in order here.
  • Peko Subs: surprisingly, not all about Pekora. Known for doing lengthy videos and the right words are all there, but the polish of the TL isn’t sky high. Still, it’s good – like a 7.5/10 – stuff.
  • S-Panda: started about three months ago. Haven’t seen a lot of his videos, but there seems to be a tendency to focus on collab stuff, like OkaKoro, Lamy and Botan, Phasmophobia duos. Does good work.
  • Holoyume: No specific focus but Aqua is a clear favorite. Have seen him make a few rare mistakes but he owns up to them. Overall, it’s good.
  • Mechanico: new-ish translator that has a penchant for long videos (they made that legendary 2h30m movie of the Sports Festival). Self-professed 35P, but also seems to like Coco and Luna. Good overall.
  • まつりす/Matsurisu: Matsuri only (duh). New subber but, from the videos I’ve seen, they do very good work. Haven’t updated in some weeks, but should still be active.
  • Osekkai: regular updates at a decent speed, though videos are often not too long. Does good work. Recommended.
  • Dahhez ch: Focus on Pekora, but not at all entirely. Lengthy videos and the TL quality has always struck me as being good. Recommended.
  • Helio Translations: has been around for over a year, and his videos have always been good. Has a weekly schedule, so his TLs are consistently on point. Highly recommended.
  • Neko Mikuri: verified and official TL for Nijisanji but also does a bunch of Hololive stuff. Good TLs and editing in his videos. Highly recommended.
  • Blubsubs v: has been around for a good while. From all the vids I’ve seen, subs have always been very good. High recommended.
  • Yamete kudasubs: group of experienced translators formed a few months ago who consistently put out very good subs. Highly recommended.
  • Lyger Vtuber translations: Matsuri only. A mainstay of the scene who’s pretty much one of the gold standards for how a translator should work. Is a mod for Matsuri’s channel, is fluent in JP, and has submitted official subs for some videos. Very highly recommended.
  • Jin Teramachi: 95% Okayu. Another mainstay, who regularly puts out very solid subs for his oshi. Highly recommended.
  • DGomes: focus primarily on Subaru. Ditto.
  • IAmVisco: Ayame only. Ditto.
  • Pentao: Okayu only. Ditto.
  • ルイス: 95% Choco. Ditto.
  • Einnashu: Aki only. Ditto.
  • BecauseOfReasons: Miko only. Often seen doing live TLs in her chat, as well as translating fanmade manga of her on Twitter. Very highly recommended.
  • Des P.: Fubuki only. Another constant presence in FBK’s chat, doing live translation. Does very good work and is also very highly recommended.
  • Steven H: Roboco only. Live TL for Roboco’s chat when he’s around. Ditto.
  • Dolphin TL イルカ翻訳: Lamy only. Regularly does live TL in her chat. Ditto.
  • VTJ Clips: Polka only. Our own Nielsm, he does very good work and is often seen translating in chat, in community posts, and tweets. If you follow this thread regularly, you know the effort that goes into showcasing Polka’s many layers (which results in subs that are very much on point). Highly recommended.

I will admit to having fallen deep, deep into the hole.

I've been very on board with Omaru Polka, one of the latest batch of Hololives to debut.

Can we make it a thread rule that you do not talk about what VTubers do outside VTubing, or what they did before? If they don't bring it up themselves then don't talk about it.
We all know they're real humans behind the screen, but who they really are shouldn't matter.
