If I can offer a perspective on the non-horny appeal of ASMR, I didn't really get it either for the longest time, until some Vtubers I actually watched regularly did it like Nyanners and Polka. Like, Nyanners ASMR streams are still just her doing weird comedy bits or making stupid jokes or just hanging out and talking about random stuff, but she naturally has to use a bit of a softer voice and hers sounds really nice to begin with. So it winds up being this interesting duality of cursed poo poo like having slime put in your ear or her sniffing rapidly like a dog vs her just vibing and talking about stuff softly, but with the added "presence" that the binaural audio adds so it feels like more like you're listening to someone that's right there? And it's similar with Polka's which tend to be her just rambling about stuff and occasionally rubbing the mic ears a bit or what not so it's very chill, it's helped me get to sleep a few times in the past. Also, most ASMR stuff hasn't given me the tingly effect but I found I tend to get it from either of them talking when they're like in specific positions above the head between the ears, but rather than it feeling weird it was kind of pleasant and helped contribute to the relaxing effect. I wonder if it was just because I was listening to people I already enjoyed hearing them talk in the first place, so the extra effects from the binaural audio just enhanced the experience? I dunno, but while it's not something I'd go throwing huge amounts of money at, I don't dislike the experience, so I can kind of understand why people want to get boners from it too. At any rate, I do think it's a "you either like it or you don't" sort of thing.
