I will admit to having fallen deep, deep into the hole.

I've been very on board with Omaru Polka, one of the latest batch of Hololives to debut.

Can we make it a thread rule that you do not talk about what VTubers do outside VTubing, or what they did before? If they don't bring it up themselves then don't talk about it.
We all know they're real humans behind the screen, but who they really are shouldn't matter.

Yeah that's what really surprised me when I fell in mid July. These people are really pouring a whole lot of themselves into the characters, to the extent I think some of the "new-style" vtubers are in fact more real than many of the reaction-cam streamers. The vtubers are wearing an avatar as a mask and using a character voice, but I think that really allows them to put more of their real personality into it all, as the mask insulates their vtuber identity from their offline identity.

Thank you for listening to my TED talk.

With most twitch streamers who have face cams or whatever, we all know they're playing a character to some extent, but everyone's supposed to buy into the kayfabe, and sometimes it's really jarring when that breaks down, it creates a really odd kind of parasocial relationship. The best non-virtual streamers/youtubers are those just being themselves and having fun playing games. Paradoxically, vtubers having this layer of mask/insulation/distancing seems to allow them more freedom to just have fun and be genuine, as if making the artificiality obvious removes the need to pretend.

Yeah I've been thinking about this a lot.

And then you have special cases like Tsukudani Norio appearing together with her Inuyama Tamaki character.

Talking about what VTubers do/did outside VTubing, even if it's "open secrets", can be hugely problematic for them both professionally and personally. "Open secrets" are still secrets even if the truth is easy to find, talking about them in the open effectively amounts to doxxing. Don't.

It's well known that YouTube takes 30%. The guesses are that Cover Corp take 40-50%, leaving the talents with somewhere between 30-40% of the total amount, but they then also have to pay taxes of the income.

A few months ago Subaru talked about her weekly schedule, and she didn't make any time to work outside jobs, from how I understood it. On the other hand she's also been living with her family until recently so maybe that affects the situation a bit.

I'd really like a source on the shared distribution (?) of the SC income, got a video or tweet link?

A slightly different interaction model between streamer and viewer? Different expectations for "acceptable content", i.e. making art, singing, variety? For women specifically, a chance to break out of any "Gamer Girl" stereotypes.
And the things we talked about before, how being "virtual" allows different/more aspects of your personality to come out

On the other hand, Japanese viewers might also actually enjoy interacting with a streamer attempting basic Japanese and not being great, just like international viewers enjoy the Japanese streamers attempting to interact with them in broken English.

Nice. Apparently she needs to do a little rehabilitation or such and will need a 'go' from the doctor before resuming work.

On the topic of what would English vtubers do to distinguish themselves, that's probably just as much an issue for Japanese. Today Polka had a planning stream, literally just brainstorming and planning together with viewers what a regular program of hers could be. I haven't watched it all yet so don't know what the conclusion is.

Hololive had a big gaffe at the start of August where several game publishers demanded they take down monetized videos of their games. Later they've reached agreements with some of them but there's still lots of holes. They just removed old videos wholesale, most were privated but Subaru had hers outright deleted.

Make sure to read the comment section, there is a pinned one with lots of additional tidbits.
One of the highly voted comments also spawned a thread discussing how large a share of the SC actually goes to the talent. Here one links to another stream by Coco at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QY5Omc7TwzA&t=593 where she directly says that Cover Corp takes 50% of the payout from YouTube, leaving about 35% to her. Someone else in the thread also mentions that the "corporate takes everything and pays everyone a fixed salary" model is employed by Nijisanji, but doesn't provide a source.

she doesnt say cover take 50%, she pays a huge amount in taxes. she pays way more because she is a foreigner.

she does say she got around 35% after taxes. it one of the reasons she was pushing for them to use streamlabs instead of youtube since youtube take 30

What I hear:
先ずYouTubeに多分30 percentぐらい取られて、それくらいかな、あれは課されてないんですよ。その後事務所に半分分だから、そんだから多分ですけど35 percent三十五パーセントぐらいかなと私は持てます。
I can't interpret the underlined part any other way than "after that the office takes half", and that also matches with the figure of 35% remaining for herself. She doesn't talk about taxes here.

By the way, it appears the official line on why YouTube takes 30% of superchats is that they consider it as purchasing an ad placement on the live stream. (I think there might also be some behind-the-scenes reasoning for avoiding them being considered a banking institution and having to worry about money laundering laws. That's just my own speculation, no basis in anything.)

I think what she means by whole and not parts is that she wants to replace complete models, not just add new components used to build dynamic models. Such that everyone has correct costume etc. And someone down in the thread says you need some programming to do that.

Yeah having a policy and contact point against harassment is fine and all, but the real winner in Nijisanji's announcement is that they will offer counseling and other services to their talent. That's the part Hololive is still missing.

And Polka is a chaos gremlin and has shades of Pekora, Miko, Coco, Haachama and Marine, depending on how she feels today. However I agree with trucutru in that both her character and her act are a bit over-designed and while every Vtuber ends being a composite of the character and the person behind it, Polka feels that she is still like 90-95% acting, so I feel she is still far from fully developed character. That being said, she has pretty incredible range, does a lot of interesting, unexpected stuff like when she read those bedtime horror(?) stories and while some of her streams have been misses for me, when she hits, she hits hard.

You should really watch this clip I subbed, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hJulNBAatBA - it's a continuation of her telling a bedtime story (not horror) and talking about her own childhood experiences with her parents and loneliness. I have no reason to believe she's making anything up here, while she may be acting in the delivery the story is real. And she also finished the stream by asking how she can make it clearer to international viewers that she's not telling horror stories, because she's not.

I like the character Polka is acting. Energetic, ridiculous, and a clown. But even when she's acting, her likes and dislikes, skills and weaknesses, personal obsessions, and past experiences, are genuine not superficial, and there's a big overlap between what she likes and what I like. That's why I'm hooked.

There is the adage about the clown crying behind the mask, and that may actually also be part of her character? I don't know for sure, but you could say that when Polka is "on stage" (streaming games, answering Marshmallow questions, etc) she's doing the clown character, but then occasionally she takes us back-stage and drops the mask. I should try also covering some of her "planning meetings" she's had.

The stream was first about reading Marshmallow posts about 湿布 (shippu, poultices i.e. medical bandages with active compound), and later also 綿棒 (menbou, cotton swabs), together menbou to shippu, becoming menbou-shippu. A terrible pun. Then the membership song started playing. Then the button mashing started.
