ok but like, it's unfortunate but it still makes sense why it didn't hit.
if the whip went away as soon as the active frames were done it would look a bit jerky, so it stays out a bit longer.
but it would also look a bit weird if you could hit an enemy after the actual whipping motion was done. so the whip has a couple recovery frames at the end.

Except you're just wrong, and the whip hitbox is in fact as long as the whip is.
But instead of taking 5 seconds to check and find out that the whip hitbox is in fact as long as it should be, you decided to talk poo poo for no reason.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rl7GB_RWpRg&t=33s

Like I said, there's a couple recovery frames at the end of the animation, because it would look weird if the whip did damage while no longer moving. That's why that attack whiffed in the clip you posted.
Also, there's a bit of leniency near the start of the animation: the full length of the hitbox is active before the whip has actually reached out to its full length, which you can see in my video there. Which makes it easier to hit enemies quickly.

I'm the opposite and almost exclusively use the backswing. If something's low enough that I can hit it with the forward swing I'll just stomp it instead, so the backswing covers all the things that approach you at awkward angles from above.

edit: Made it. Oh my god, again. to all of that. Got knocked onto spikes on 7-4 by a frog. :toot: 99 health and the eggplant crown not gonna help me there!!

edit2: In hindsight it now occurs to me that killing Hundun with the eggplant crown might have done something? Maybe I shouldn't be laughing at myself for dying moments from the finish line on that run. Perhaps unlocked an item? Even though there'd be no point cause you're done with the run at that stage. Hopefully I don't have to do this again, although frankly I wouldn't mind visiting that area again some time.

That's a bit of a relief. Yeah I don't know that I'd want to try and juggle quite that many things at once to try and take it into the CO.

By the way I appreciate you and everyone else answering my dumb questions in this thread. I could just look stuff up on the wiki but that's 100% guaranteed to spoil adjacent poo poo. It's kind of a delicate balance to get enough guidance so that I know there's at least a point to trying to accomplish these feats, but without spoiling the results or knowing too much. The game is difficult enough that I'd hate to laboriously struggle to do something over a period of time and then find out it wasn't even anything meaningful at all. I did that for the first 120 hours or so and am glad for it - even Olmec's second phase was a really fun surprise - but I'm definitely past the point of random experimentation. I want to get stuff done.

I'm probably too precious about avoiding spoilers in general, but still.

edit: Speaking of... can I get a small hint for 5-1? I blew up the entirety of Lahamu's lair with the alien blaster and killed everything in it that could be killed but didn't find anything that seemed like the next step... I mean there's the blaster itself obviously, do I lug that into Neo-Babylon or something? I dropped it in order to keep the scepter (SC/CO wasn't in the cards anymore at that point). Still missing two items in the journal.

Some number of character unlocks, then climb up to the surface in the camp and pick the little item up.

That's what I've read, but as far as I can tell, I have all the characters that don't require getting to the sunken city and my camp still has not updated with the way up.

I was hoping I could do seeded runs to help me reach the trickier areas of the game, but if I really need to unlock every character first then I might just give up or use a save editor or something.

You need to do something in Volcana 2-1, then find something else in the Temple 4-1 (usually?), and you'll get something that you'll use in the Ice Caves. If you already know that I mean the Alien Compass and you've already been to the Mothership, then there's nothing else for you there.

SeANMcBAY posted:

So how do you guys think 2 compares to 1 now that its been out for a bit? I won't be playing it until the Switch release.

It doesn't really add much of interest to the formula of Spelunky, especially in terms of builds and overall options for the player as they go through the game. It ends up being too long with overly strict requirements to make it to the lategame areas (which are quite obviously the 'intended path' rather than optional side areas) which results in runs that are much more monotonous than they should be. Its honestly quite ridiculous how little they really shake up the formula of the core platforming and embrace the nature of being a roguelike, for example I think they really should have had the different characters have different gameplay attributes to assist with replayablity (like so many other roguelikes like Nuclear Throne, Enter the Gungeon, Binding of Isaac etc...) but its purely aesthetic at the end.

The different routes are nice, but don't change up the game that much, especially since they only last two worlds before reconverging in the Ice Caves, and personally I think its only really Volcana that brings in really new mechanics that are worthy of a sequel, the other stuff is still primarily rehashing stuff from the first game, I don't think it provides as much replayability as it could have.

Overall the main thing it brings to the table is an absurd increase in difficulty, particularly the kind of difficulty I personally find extremely obnoxious like instant kills and long stuns that lead to heavy damage. People will argue that this was present in the first game, but I'd argue that its a matter of degree and what was previously a fun level of chaos in the first game goes way overboard here to the point that its not fun at all. They don't really give the player many buffs to correspond with said increase in difficulty so it feels like you are fighting against the typical Spelunky quirks (see all the discussion about how crappy the whip is) with an extra pile of additional poo poo on top.

Spelunky 1 may have less content but I think its a much more streamlined and elegant game, for me anyway. Spelunky 2 primarily seems to exist to appeal to some ultra hardcore playerbase at the exclusion of everyone else.

Apologies if I sound bitter, but it irks me how what feels like serious flaws with this game were mostly ignored by reviews and such and people are talking about the game as a stone cold classic when I really think it just isn't.

I think my confusion is - does the Mothership = Lahamu's lair, aka the secret back area in 5-1 with the plasma cannon? I've been there. I thought the Mothership was at the end of the Cosmic Ocean.

I guess I was working off a few assumptions:

1. The Alien Compass is supposed to help me navigate the CO to the Mothership.
2. There is no way I have to go through 95 levels of CO in a game that doesn't have Save & Quit. Shortcuts surely exist. Surely.
3. I'm on 54/56 Items in the journal, and the two missing items must have something to do with getting to the end.

So since the Alien Compass only does anything special on 5-1 (other than pointing you to the normal exit/jelly in the CO, which I don't think the regular compass does) I thought it was pointing me at the next stage - i.e., at the next item that will help me find the special exits/shortcuts in the CO. But if there's nothing else at Lahamu's as you and Actuarial Fables say, then...

Of course, any one of those assumptions could be wrong... :\ edit: I mean, I guess the Cosmic Ocean is not actually Space per se, so maybe it doesn't make sense for there to be an alien ship at the end. :v: I dunno.

Spoilers for 5-1 secret area and final final area.

The Mothership is the secret area in the Ice Caves there's not another one or a different one in the Cosmic Ocean. I don't think there's anything special there aside from the Queen, the Plasma Cannon, and the Shopkeeper Clones. No shortcuts through the CO beyond using the alien compass to know where each door is. The Cosmic Ocean just goes and goes until you get to 7-99. I don't want to spoil 7-99 but I'd just say to not get your hopes up.

That final final area is somewhere I'd like to get to once, but it doesn't look interesting enough to try to do over and over. I think it's more for players that are determined to do the longest challenging run in the game.

Sway Grunt

Hah, so all my assumptions were wrong. But at least it means I'm not missing anything. I actually really like the final final area, I found it super fun the few times I've been. I don't think I can make it to the end if there are no shortcuts, though, that's just way, way too much without the ability to quit and resume a run later. Good to know there's nothing super exciting at the end, at least.

I guess the only mystery then is what those two missing Items are in my journal (entries 18 and 40), which are also the only entries I'm still missing - every other category is at 100%. The only thing I can think of that I haven't done is rob the Palace of Pleasure, and I'll do that when I go for the Millionaire achievement.

drat, I was all set to rob/ghost the PoP and get the Millionaire achievement but it didn't spawn, apparently because I'd killed Tusk on 4-1. Oops. What sucks is that I didn't even need to get her idol cause I had a skeleton key and didn't need Sparrow to unlock the backdoor to the palace. I could've totally just not done that. I ended with 475k and supposedly the PoP ghosted is worth 600k so the 40k from the idol wasn't necessary. Oh well. I might as well assume I would've died to the bodyguards or something like that, I guess.

edit: What the hell, that wasn't even remotely 600k?? Lame.

People who invest a shitload of time into a game propped up by critics, streamers, and general internet consensus don’t like having their immense time investment sneered at by critique. Insecurity about your interests is a hell of a drug.
