What the heck is a VJ?
Well I'm glad you asked. As a DJ is to the music (a disc jockey), a VJ is to the video component of a modern live (usually) musical performance; sometimes extending as far as partial or full control of the lighting systems. What that actually looks like in practice can vary widely from a more or less improvisational set with the VJ "driving" the whole time, to tightly time code controlled audio visual performances where all the work is pre-production on the videos as seen above. There are many new artforms and technologies quickly becoming part of live performance such as projection mapping, holographic projection, various applications of LED lighting, AR and VR that a VJ may have to adapt and integrate depending on their clients' requests.

Who the heck are you?
I'm a nobody. I've been autodidacting my way along in the field for maybe 3 years now after I noticed that there was sometimes more interesting stuff happening on the projector at certain club shows and raves and inferring that that had to be someone's job. I have yet to perform live before an audience. I've been trying to stream some but online is very unfriendly to streaming copyrighted music. Since it's hard to find collaborators especially in the age of covid I'm trying to learn music production as well to stop falling in that pitfall.

What kind of software is used?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLmNKiqJQ4I
The industry leader is Resolume, available in two flavours: Avenue (cheaper, prosumer) and Arena (more expensive, all the features). Runs better on Windows, available on Mac. I like to start by explaining it as Photoshop but for video. It does live compositing of an arbitrary number of layers of video content with different blend modes, among other things. A very robust suite for editing parameters based on beats, MIDI, OSC, time or audio signal (FFT) and a lot of good sources/generators. Free trial, go check it out. This is the one I use.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i33ouhnsyzc
HeavyM is more focused on projection mapping than video playback and compositing. Windows and Mac. I haven't messed with it a ton since I don't have a projector.

3D modelling or other content creation like After Effects. Creating your own content is key to standing out. Nobody wants to see another set of Beeple clips.

Mostly anything that can draw pixels to a screen can be captured as a source with either NDI or Syphon/Spout.

Mac stuff that looks cool that I haven't tried because Mac:
Lumen: video synthesis
Modul8: compositing

What about hardware?
As much computer as you can afford to throw at it. Resolume especially is optimized to playback video on the graphics card with their proprietary codec. Gaming graphics cards are fine.
MIDI controllers. The more or less standard all in one job is the Akai APC40 mkII. Launches clips, controls parameters, bingo bango. Back when I was starting out I didn’t have the money to buy one, so I bought a MIDI Mix and an APC mini, they’ve treated me well. I’ll go more into my own setup in a later post.

Didn’t you say something about how this was all about music?
I don’t know jack poo poo about music. I’m learning.

This is a great OP and I'll bookmark the thread. That said, I haven't done any VJing for a very long time (and even then I was sort of peripheral to the rest of the team.) We would shoot stuff on mini-DV, edit in Premiere 6 and then use two VHS decks and a vision mixer to project on stage. The thing that always got most reaction, though, was a live camera with a hand puppet, which goes to show that a live, analogue option shouldn't be overlooked.

I sometimes think about getting one of those Critter and Guitari boxes, like the Etc or now the Eyesy. I have to say, though, that the built in programs don't float my boat and I am not a programmer. Wondering if there's something a bit more hands on and tweakable that anyone can think of.

(I've also been this close to ordering a Teenage Engineering OPZ, which has video stuff alongside the music groovebox. Seems a bit fiddly, though.)

I realise this isn't contributing much, but I don't want to see this thread die!

I have been holding myself back on specialized hardware, but check out the 3trinsRGB. Very cool stuff, requires a CRT.
LZX also makes some very compelling, but very expensive kit. Their newer stuff seems to work with modern TVs. If I had a grand right now I'd preorder the Chromagnon.
This guy goes into some of the hardships in dealing with video electronics as a hobbyist:

Edit: Also check out that channel for vids of LZX modules.

Ground floor, subscribed. Hopefully, I'll have time soon to read up on it and try some of this out.

For 3d artists familiar with Blender, there's a tutorial on how to get Blender to develop video art live with audio inputs

Examples:

oh hey, a blender thread. I’ve been messing around with visualizers based off of assorted tutorials here and there. I haven’t settled on one I’m super fond of yet, but I’ve enjoyed the process.

I just reinstalled Blender. There's some cool extensions that allow for MIDI control as well as live Spout output, but I'm not sure if they're available in 2.9 yet.

CDM has a tutorial showing how to build a 3D VJ tool in cables.gl.

I had a very brief look at cables.gl and it seems like a good way of messing around.

One potentially interesting space to look at for ideas and software to use is the chiptune scene. Chiptunes and live vis pretty much go hand in hand.

Sharing is caring, what’s good these days? I’ve been thinking about greeting soleeter up and running so I can get a bit more responsiveness for my stuff than just using a f curve.

Ouch! I still use a bit of beeple, but I warp it to hell and generally overlay with other stuff. He's made some some lovely stuff with a good kinetic feel.

I'm using Hexler's TouchViZ on iPad - I've experimented with TouchDesigner and some questionably sourced Resolume versions, but I still can't get past how easy it is to interact in time with the music on a touch surface.

Mostly I try to stick to time lapse photography, glitch loops and abstract textures. I don't have live vid, but here's a video I made for the band I work with that captures the vibe a bit: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-g-2HHWQP6Y

And I by the band I work with - I'm in the band, and I don't really VJ for anyone else.

I'd love to do more with hardware, I've got a Critter and Guitari Videoscope that I have the best intentions to use as a dynamic sidelight - but it never quite works out for various cabling/logistics reasons.

The Teenage Engineering OP-Z engine is Unity, yeah? Anyone had any experience making audio reactive stuff in that?

I was also using a piece of software called RD Showcockpit to handle some MIDI to OSC math stuff, but their licensing is god awful and I no longer recommend it. Maybe if you like have to talk to a lighting desk.

I played my first gig over the weekend. Did waaaaay to much ketamine and got hosed over by the promoter, but I seemed to impress some people and it'll hopefully lead to other gigs in future after I clean up my act.

That's a screenshot I made today because one of the DJ's asked for a still for his mix cover art

I finally got a CRT. It's a 30 inch behemoth. Ordered these two little kits from Etsy now that I'm dealing with analog video signals. Gonna finally learn to solder.
This one is two in, one out mixer:

And this is a version of an enhancer that allows custom circuit bending

Not gonna gently caress with the CRT. Just the stuff that plugs into it.

About to get a new laptop which should be much more suited to VJing.

In the meantime here is another set with Imocean and Res_Freq which was streamed by Richmond Magazine (RadioRVA) last night.

and a short little heavy encore

Trying to do these once a week. Let me know what you think.

TVsVeryOwn: Didn't know the Blender could syphon out. That's interesting. Going to start learning TD soon. It's just a different beast than Maya. Closest to Houdini of course... which I never could get a comfortable grip on.
