As a DJ is to the music (a disc jockey), a VJ is to the video component of a modern live (usually) musical performance; sometimes extending as far as partial or full control of the lighting systems. What that actually looks like in practice can vary widely from a more or less improvisational set with the VJ "driving" the whole time, to tightly time code controlled audio visual performances where all the work is pre-production on the videos as seen above. There are many new artforms and technologies quickly becoming part of live performance such as projection mapping, holographic projection, various applications of LED lighting, AR and VR that a VJ may have to adapt and integrate depending on their clients' requests. Who the heck are you? I'm a nobody. I've been autodidacting my way along in the field for maybe 3 years now after I noticed that there was sometimes more interesting stuff happening on the projector at certain club shows and raves and inferring that that had to be someone's job. I have yet to perform live before an audience. I've been trying to stream some but online is very unfriendly to streaming copyrighted music. Since it's hard to find collaborators especially in the age of covid I'm trying to learn music production as well to stop falling in that pitfall. What kind of software is used? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VLmNKiqJQ4I The industry leader is Resolume, available in two flavours: Avenue (cheaper, prosumer) and Arena (more expensive, all the features). Runs better on Windows, available on Mac. I like to start by explaining it as Photoshop but for video. It does live compositing of an arbitrary number of layers of video content with different blend modes, among other things. A very robust suite for editing parameters based on beats, MIDI, OSC, time or audio signal (FFT) and a lot of good sources/generators. Free trial, go check it out. I haven't messed with it a ton since I don't have a projector. 3D modelling or other content creation like After Effects. Creating your own content is key to standing out. Nobody wants to see another set of Beeple clips. Mostly anything that can draw pixels to a screen can be captured as a source with either NDI or Syphon/Spout. Mac stuff that looks cool that I haven't tried because Mac: Lumen: video synthesis Modul8: compositing What about hardware? As much computer as you can afford to throw at it. Resolume especially is optimized to playback video on the graphics card with their proprietary codec. Gaming graphics cards are fine. MIDI controllers. The more or less standard all in one job is the Akai APC40 mkII. Launches clips, controls parameters, bingo bango. Back when I was starting out I didn’t have the money to buy one, so I bought a MIDI Mix and an APC mini, they’ve treated me well. I’ll go more into my own setup in a later post. This is a great OP and I'll bookmark the thread. That said, I haven't done any VJing for a very long time (and even then I was sort of peripheral to the rest of the team.) We would shoot stuff on mini-DV, edit in Premiere 6 and then use two VHS decks and a vision mixer to project on stage. The thing that always got most reaction, though, was a live camera with a hand puppet, which goes to show that a live, analogue option shouldn't be overlooked. I sometimes think about getting one of those Critter and Guitari boxes, like the Etc or now the Eyesy. I have to say, though, that the built in programs don't float my boat and I am not a programmer. Wondering if there's something a bit more hands on and tweakable that anyone can think of. (I've also been this close to ordering a Teenage Engineering OPZ, which has video stuff alongside the music groovebox. Seems a bit fiddly, though.) I realise this isn't contributing much, but I don't want to see this thread die!

I have been holding myself back on specialized hardware, but check out the 3trinsRGB. Very cool stuff, requires a CRT. LZX also makes some very compelling, but very expensive kit. Their newer stuff seems to work with modern TVs. If I had a grand right now I'd preorder the Chromagnon. I just reinstalled Blender. There's some cool extensions that allow for MIDI control as well as live Spout output, but I'm not sure if they're available in 2.9 yet.

CDM has a tutorial showing how to build a 3D VJ tool in cables.gl. I had a very brief look at cables.gl and it seems like a good way of messing around.

One potentially interesting space to look at for ideas and software to use is the chiptune scene. Chiptunes and live vis pretty much go hand in hand.

He's made some some lovely stuff with a good kinetic feel. I'm using Hexler's TouchViZ on iPad - I've experimented with TouchDesigner and some questionably sourced Resolume versions, but I still can't get past how easy it is to interact in time with the music on a touch surface. Mostly I try to stick to time lapse photography, glitch loops and abstract textures. Maybe if you like have to talk to a lighting desk. I played my first gig over the weekend. Did waaaaay to much ketamine and got hosed over by the promoter, but I seemed to impress some people and it'll hopefully lead to other gigs in future after I clean up my act.  That's a screenshot I made today because one of the DJ's asked for a still for his mix cover art

About to get a new laptop which should be much more suited to VJing.
