I had two cousins growing up who were full 90s Goths. I thought they were the loving coooolest. They had Ankh tattoos and wore black lipstick and stuff. They got me into Einsturzende Neubauten, NIN, Ministry, Skinny Puppy, Nick Cave, VNV Nation, etc.

I'm really glad I had them around because most of my friends in my early teens were private school jerks and have grown up to be adult jerks.

edit:

Not sure how/if VNV Nation really fits into the whole Goth aesthetic but I always kind of associated them. Its a cool project and brimming with super positive messages.

I dated a goth girl in high school who got me into TON and similar stuff and taught me that satin bedclothes suck because it's like sleeping between sheets of teflon.

I segued from that into industrial and electronic music which has significant overlap with the goth crowd so I've always been goth-adjecent, while managing to avoid the spoken word sessions.

The great thing about goth is that it dies and revives every decade or so. With numetal and Marilyn Manson in the 1990's, it had to change, then came the Numetal and Emo and goth went harder with the Cruxshadows and London After Midnight in the Early 2000s, then everything was EBM, and then it got all fetishy and creepy. Now it's all throwbacks trying to appeal to the old goths or more dull EBM. Metal is good though. Mono Inc. is one of the few acts from this decade that I really quite enjoy.

I was a Cruxshadows/London After Midnight guy. Got to see Bella Morte a couple years ago at the local goth club. Was shocked we still have a "local goth club." Bella Morte was still great.

I remember hanging near the GPO where the goths hung out on sundays, big hair fur coats regardless of weather, but never interacting, older people, i was a kid. Mainly listening to rap because that was the thing but living off UK music magazines, the cure mainly, but joy division and such Bauhaus etc from Rage, reading Propaganda or other goth zine review pages at the music store and putting it back because i couldnt afford it

Then in highschool finding the goths and punks, me still hanging near the GPO, finally have a full cassette collection of the cures discog, art teachers telling me the Happy Mondays and New order are good, but I knew Joy Division, then befriending the goths...Christian Death, Sisters..i knew that...but by then I already knew My Dying Bride, and Bathory...then Burzum Mayhem darkthrone 1993, Black metal

Later Im hanging out with our cities black metal crew at a goth club and i meet all the existing old GPO goths and its a good time.

Roughly true story. Theres some 90's rave in there somewhere. And a whole lot of lovely punks and poor housing.

Reagardless "GOTH" music is fantastic

I tried to find a subculture once. I never ended up liking any of them enough to actually run with one, as metalheads were too prejudiced and ravers were walking drugs and Linux people were insufferable. I probably came closest with goth, except I never got any closer than buying music and loving black clothes, since I was definitely not going to start smoking, and I have whatever the opposite of depression is so that was not a great fit either (clearly perky goth did not exist in my world yet).

I actually think in some sense I love those two songs and Dominion/Mother Russia and Temple of Love and This Corrosion all equally, but Floodland stands as such a fantastic album that I definitely listen to the tracks there the most.

Also Headhunter has to be the song that has grown on me the most of any song ever. I remember the first time it came on at the goth/industrial night I attended sometimes (C-Street represent) I stared mystified that literally everyone else instantly flooded the dancefloor, like, "uh, how are these lyrics inspiring anyone to dance? Also what the hell is that dissonant backing drone over the chorus? What is wrong with you?"

I was in this silly punk band in the 80's and we made a really bad 'goth' song for some reason, kind of a joke.

Then we made a video for it in the nearby cemetery.

Brian who sings the song passed away last year and is now buried in that cemetery.

Goths dress in black and have long hair like this, but metalheads dress in black and have long hair like that.

Back in the 80s there was a big difference between the two subcultures, but they've blended together a lot. The emergence of goth metal in the early to mid 90s both drove and reflected that development.

I remember being late teens in the early 2000s, and we all identified as "goth" but what we actually liked were mosh pits, smoking ditchweed while lying around old church cemeteries, and having fights with the other teenagers who'd do laps of the town on their learner mopeds

Later I met my ex's sister and her boyfriend, who were 24/7 uncompromising goth lolita and throwback post-punk respectively, regardless of context or ability to afford life essentials that weren't Louis XVI's wig or Terry Funk's pants, and so occasionally I'd end up on a log flume or at a hockey game with Petticoats Darkly and the bastard son of Sid & Siouxsie, where it was considered imperative that I play this entirely straight at all times

In conclusion, goth is a land of contrasts, and chiunque può essere "goth", and so on and so forth
