yeah i first heard of it when i was in taiwan and hong kong in the early 2000s and it was just called bubble tea (or milk tea w/ pearl as yugioh said). i could have missed people calling it boba or something but the first i heard that term was people in the US saying it so I kind of assumed they heard somebody saying 'bubble' with an accent and just went with it. i'm probably wrong, i guess it doesn't really matter
