for real, disney shifting their attention to pretty much this 100% had a pretty dire effect on the whole market. it spawned a bunch of imitators because of its economic success and as a result the amount of non-pg13-action poo poo in wide release has dwindled to next to nothing. then covid hit

like it's not impossible or even that difficult to find something good that has been contemporaneously released, but most people aren't gonna go fishing for it. avengers playing in all of the theaters at the local multiplex? gently caress it, gimme the slop

they made movies exactly like the comics, simplistic stories but with endless crossovers between properties to keep things going.

eventually they go entirely up their own rear end on cross franchise continuity and no one but comic nerds care

It's so bad, they all build off one another. I stopped watching wandavision after half an episode and I had 0 context for the new dr strange movie.

I was just talking with a friend the other day about how, oddly, this is the one thing those movies consistently don't have. They're completely sexless. Sure, some of the characters have girlfriends because that's how it was in the comics, but they're just props. There is no flirtation, no passion, no genuine romantic impulse. These relationships are made of quips and hugs and sometimes a forced moment of shared trauma. They spend 5 minutes on "oh, right, Doctor Strange is supposed to have this lady he pines for" and then there's an excuse to get her off screen for the rest of the movie so he can focus on punching the monsters.

The most prominent relationship in the entire MCU, that we're all supposed to think is this incredible deep loving bond that transcends dimensions, is between a synthetic robot man and a witch and its entire basis seems to be that he was nice to her once. They have zero chemistry, and in the show where she creates an imaginary perfect world for them to live in, she literally makes herself a housewife in a 1950s sitcom. I know it's all Disney but yeeesh.

And you absolutely can have big blockbuster adventure movies with real human passion in them! Look at Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Seriously what is America's problem with sex

Tom Holland and Zendaya could probably have good chemistry seeing as they're a couple in real life and all. But yeah the movies just won't let it happen. lately i've been trying to avoid anything that belongs to a franchise or any kind of previously established canon. if I enjoy something, it should be based entirely on its own merits and not because I once liked another thing its related to. every big budget movie or show made in recent memory has been a massive disappointment. even dune, while technically well done, was just fine as a film. I certainly didn't feel anything after watching it, except full of snacks. everyone is clamoring for me to watch andor because iTs NoT LiKe OtHeR sTaR WaRs TruSt Me bRo, but is it really? or is it just slightly less mass appealing and that somehow makes it noteworthy?

yeah i feel mostly the same way. it's probably a distinction without much difference but i think something set within the same "universe" can be completely fine and way different from the source material, e.g. star trek -> tng -> ds9

Ya, I'm hoping they'll keep that up in the next one. I mean they only met each other for like 10 minutes at the end so it's hard to say right now. But it's promising and I trust Denis.

Hopefully he changes the story enough to give her a better role than "Paul's 14 year old bride and babymama" like in the books.

I don't think wakanda forever was hard to follow. It was a long movie that could have been tighter, but the plot is simple:

- King tchalla is dead and all wakanda mourns
- Every country is trying to steal vibranium from wakanda, the only known source, because they're greedy
- some sinister group has discovered that there is vibranium at the bottom of the ocean too
- their vibranium mining rig is destroyed in the middle of the night with all hands lost
- the world blames wakanda for this
- a fishman appears in wakanda and says actually, it's our vibranium and we destroyed the rig, don't tell anyone in the world about this or will destroy you too, also you have to bring us the scientist who invented the vibranium detector
- the wakandans find the scientist but can't bring themselves to kill her because she is just a kid
- wakanda and fish people are enemies now. Battle ensues.and eventually they make up because they realize they are more alike than different.

In side plots we find out where the fish people came from, and wakanda uses the undersea resources to bring back the black panther in the form of tchallas younger sister.

It's certainly not a one-line high concept plot, but it's not hard to follow. I agree with indigi that the reviewers getting confused by it are just morons.

It's amazing how well they captured the comic-reading experience, right up to the point where they gave us one monumental crossover which had just enough finality to it to serve as a jumping-off point.

the only one of the mcu movies that really seemed a bit up its rear end about continuity — i mean besides endgame, which is obviously a part 2 — was the latest dr strange, which i enjoyed even though i didn’t have any context beyond vague plot summaries of the wandavision thing. otherwise i guess you need to know who the major characters are, but there isn’t a whole lot of meaningful continuity

they’re not all good movies, but if you think it’s comics level of intertwined continuity you’re way understating how bad actual comics are

yeah this is a great example of it in a action movie. you get that Tom Cruise would be doing wolf howls with his eyes popping out at the beginning (I mean, look at her) then fully buy that he's a changed man and has fallen for her by the time they're in that farmhouse in the French countryside. you also buy him + Ilsa in Rogue Nation. I haven't seen 2op Gun but I've heard that him and Connelly work well together too

of all people, why does Tom Cruise understand how to do romantic tension in blockbusters

Dr Strange could of been a legitimately good movie if they let Raimi finish the horror flick he obviously tried to make, but had it taken from his hands and chopped to death during testing

I didn’t see wandavision so I didn’t know she had alternate universe kids but that was rendered mostly incidental by the end anyway
