I didn't know there was a difference in what you could use - assumed it was all fair game. Does that mean you can have a yellow bear in a red shirt named winnie the pooh but it has to be a completely different art style or something?

i think it's more that if there was something added to the character by one of the later works, that wasn't in the one that's now public domain, you can't use it.

mickey mouse has a bunch of those, idk if winnie the pooh does though

basically

as an example, mickey mouse as seen in steamboat willie will be public domain next year, but mickey mouse as depicted in fantasia will be a copyright violation

it really does seem to be a wonderful movie beloved by all who have watched it. i suspect that it was just somebody who had kids of the right age, and so saw it, being like "movie is a massive sleeper, i'm gonna put it in the script." that's totally a guess on my part though.

i still haven't watched paddington 2, but i definitely want to now

John Wick 4 is pretty good. could have lost 20 minutes without even noticing but some of the setpiece fights are really cool. the very second they wrapped Keanu became too old to ever star in another action movie, a couple of his fights were right on the borderline

i tried to watch early 80s Japanese punk movie 'Burst City' last night after it coincidentally got mentioned in two different youtube videos. I think i made it about 30 minutes in before giving up. half the shots are extreme closeups or handheld shaky-cam, you have no idea who anyone is, and there's almost no dialogue. it's like someone spliced together a dozen audience recordings of japanese also-ran punk bands, with a very tacked on narrative. even the wiki article says its a product of its time and doesn't really hold up as a film.

it also does that infuriating thing you see in a lot of japanese media, where all emotion is portrayed by people throwing their heads back and shrieking loudly. there are entire scenes of nothing but that.

tbh i think punk is supposed to be annoying and lovely and thoroughly unpleasant to experience, that's the whole point of the style

among the things punk is rebelling against is the idea that you have to be skilled at your art before showing it off
