i have always appreciated that movie for having the most accurate metal cutting/welding scene.

first they need to cut out the damaged pipe, so they roll in an oxyacetylene rig correctly equipped with a cutting torch and slice out the piece. then they need to weld in a new pipe, so they actually switch to a stick welder and even show a proper scratch-start!

so many movies just have the actor point a propane torch at the general area with a sparkler going for effects and it does whatever the story needs. k-19 iss maybe the only time i've seen a movie not only acknowledge that welding and cutting are two different processes that use different tools, but also show a cutting head on the torch used for cutting instead of a welding head, and demonstrate proper arc welding technique. it's refreshing

Have you seen Thief there's a good metal cutting scene in that.

also I am 8 eps into FOUNDATION and I'm liking it well enough, if as with all prestige TV these days the story is twisted and teased out far thinner than it needs to be. Looks fantastic (although the fx budget was heavily loaded to the start of the season) and drat if Lee Pace didn't put in the work to look like the very sculpture of an emperor with every opportunity afforded him. Musk should be taking notes.

I really like SNW to the point that i havent watched the last 2 eps of S1 yet, waiting a week or so

Parallel watching Discovery and everybody's takes are pretty accurate on it.

lol that's quite a jarring contrast

season 1 of discovery really wasn't that bad because you have michelle yeoh and jason issacs hamming it the gently caress up (especially once you find out lorca is from the mirror universe). the plot makes very little sense and ultimately is just a bunch of stuff that happens, but most of the actors are pretty good even if their characters aren't

tilly is the lead in the new starfleet academy series which makes me not want to watch it tbh. i didn't see disco past season 3 and i know they changed her characterization a bit but she's the weakest one out of the handful they give screen time i think. generally insufferable

i could not make it through picard season 2 or discovery season 3. SNW was a bit nostalgic and colourful fun in contrast

i watched discovery s1 and thought it was pretty awful but i like klingons so i stuck with it. then got halfway into s2 and it was depressing and dour and total poo poo and i gave up and haven't gone back.

i watched picard s1 and it was so bad i skipped s2. then i watched s3 on red letter media's recommendation and i was like hah, this is a little better, this is kind of the star trek i remember...i think? not bad? but a lot of that was just seeing all the familiar faces again.

then i watched snw and it was like throwing open a window into the sun. the shiny appealing future. the problems that are straightforward stories of good guys vs. dangerous or misunderstood forces instead of grimdark everything-is-a-conspiracy cynicism. the smart, competent people doing their jobs well and even joking and smiling with each other. the occasional comedy bits spock and t'pring brain switch mixed with moments of genuinely creepy sci-fi horror the ones who walk away from omelas but everything works out in the end. oh and apparently they finally replaced all the light bulbs on the sets.

it finally just felt right.

I’d also guess michelle rodriguez’s part was originally written for gina carano

it is far more of a throwback than any of the other recent series (even including enterprise i think). i like it too, hopefully they keep it relatively light

there are a couple things that kind of indicate that they might try and do something similar to the way discovery derailed itself by setting up a villain that is a relative of spock and making number one an augment for some stupid loving reason but the teaser that paramount put up a couple weeks ago doesn't seem to emphasize any of that stuff, which is a good sign that we're not going to get some more mystery box horeshit. hopefully

the fun thing about kiki is that all the locales are based on stockholm. miyazaki went to sweden to discuss a possible pippi longstocking movie that never materialized, and brought back a ton of sketches of stockholm.
