The Dark (1979). that clip is sped up; in the actual movie the guy somewhat leisurely swings against the wall.

it was filmed with a human serial killer but Alien was popular at the time so they changed it. it was made by the original Film Ventures International, always a sign of goofiness.

i finished Raised By Wolves. the first two episodes were great and of course it couldn't keep that up but it was still disappointing how far downhill it went. the mystery of the planet was boring because they obviously just wanted to string along the audience without actually doing anything. and let's have the guy go crazy for no reason except that otherwise there wouldn't be enough of a conflict.

really great premise and design and everything but too bad it couldn't've have a better story.

i just read Showboat World which was a delightful Vancian romp as they say. his books are always so enjoyable to read.

also it had a hilariously misleading cover, considering the whole story takes place on a planet with no advanced technology and no aliens:

saw the new Mandalorian and man it had callbacks for fans to go nuts over: Boba Fett's armor! with firing missile! Anakin's pod racer! krayt dragon! and it sounds like Obi-Wan did! and then Boba Fett too i guess.

it wasn't incredible but it was fun.

i finished with The Boys, which was pretty good overall. it was a bit shaky about halfway through the second season but it picked up and it felt like they deliberately decided to make Butcher more likable which was good because he'd been really annoying. it was pretty cool when they beat the poo poo out of Stormfront. It sort of ended with the status quo being restored so i'm not sure what they'll do in the next season.

rjmccall posted:

i think boba fett is canonically australian, so you should be safe against that particular twist ending unless he starts looking into buying a condo or two at the beach

the actor's in his late fifties but the character should be early forties if he was a kid in the prequels. clone degeneration i guess.

new Mandalorian was okay but i get tired of the Empire as bad guys. i wonder if they're trying to lead into the First Order from the sequels even though no one should want that.

Sweevo posted:

that's series 8 - the one where they spent the entire series in the brig and it's full of prison rape jokes.

1-6 were the good ones (4-6 especially). 7 is where chris barrie left so they replaced rimmer with kochanski and forgot to write any good jokes. 8 is the prison one. 9 was the mini-series, 10 was the first new proper series and isn't bad. haven't watched the rest yet

7 was also the first one after Rob Grant left and the difference in quality is really obvious. i don't know if he was the talented one or if he and Naylor just worked better together.

also saw underwater. i don't know, it wasn't bad but the monsters sort of felt unnecessary.

i'm positive that starfleet protocol would be to retreat to the battle bridge any time they're under red alert, and our crew just ignores that policy because they're lazy.

point-to-point transporters could get them all down there in 2.5 seconds

separating the ship was supposed to be used to get families and civilians out of the way during dangerous situations but showing it took up too much screen time so they quickly just forgot about it.

i always say that a new star trek should rip off the culture as much as possible. show a utopian society without money where everyone has everything they need. show starfleet as more of a volunteer organization. but execs are probably terrified that people wouldn't be able to identify with something too different and wouldn't watch.

the simpsons is the only sitcom i can think of that has genuinely fun songs, and they were pretty much all good because they didn't overdo it. the stonecutters song is better than every song in bob's burgers put together.

MST3K had some good songs. "Patrick Swayze Christmas" is a classic.

Venom wasn't as good as the first one. i wanted to see more buddy stuff between Venom and Eddie instead of having them break up and inevitably get back together. but this was the rare pg-13 movie in which they actually use the f-word and it was interesting seeing the hero outright murder the villain.

the games are deliberately structured to feel like movies so it seems like you could adapt them easily, but i knew hollywood would pick elements from different games and stick them together. of course, if they did adapt the first game they'd have to change the ending since the new tomb raider movie ripped it off.
