Agile Vector posted:I was talking with my brother about the remake (haven't seen it yet) and he said the original terrified him as a kid which surprised me. we're apparently a few years apart enough that I found it fun and he found all the witch scenes upsetting the witches was the only movie i walked out of as a kid, after the boy was horrifyingly mutated into a mouse as bald secret witches cackled. i just turned to my parents and said "i'm leaving now" and walked out of the theater

fart simpson posted:also one episode should have been literally 4 hours of two people sitting there in total silence thinking for 5-20 minutes between moves as someone who has watched each of the last 3 world championships... yeah okay that's accurate. if you don't have a good commentator it's pretty worthless. all too often the commentators are grandmasters themselves and are basically chatting amongst themselves but there's a guy 'chessnetwork' that is amazing and i highly recommend, especially for the championship commentary. he streams on twitch

Schadenboner posted:Like it's some sort of horrible twisting of the verfremdungseffekt where it's instead being used to exculpate the viewer from the moral responsibility of the violence they watch? yeah i feel this every time someone is thrown into a brick wall in these movies. the brick wall collapses like a house of cards when their body hits it, which 100% alleviates the sense that it would hurt but if they showed a guy's head hitting it and bouncing off, with a wooden 'thuck' sound, it would turn off the middle-aged ladies who just want to see thor and cap'n quip at each other

doesn't he just make movies to fund his deep sea diving expeditions? can't really fault him for that i really liked the abyss. when titanic was first teased with a giant cardboard ship in our local movie theater, i was trying to convince everyone that it was going to be 'the abyss: part 2' and that the whole titanic thing was a big ruse

i saw phantom menace in the theater with a friend, and while we were all still jacked-up on new star wars and darth maul, she was like: 'that movie was trash garbage.' it took us months to come around, but when we did we made sure to formally apologize for being so loving wrong

Something more softly spoken like Attenborough might do I would have dug a lot more. i think i remember this. i've always been curious about that topic; dry science details like how many thousands of years until all our buildings are completely buried, stuff like that but i remember the stuff they were talking about was really lame and i turned it off

first off if you like musicals that's totally cool, not trying to yuck anyone's yum here but it always bugged me that fans try to get you to watch musicals by saying: 'this one's not like the others! it's twisted / dark / raunchy / crazy!' and i'm like... every musical does that though....

i've talked to a lot of people with zero book / story knowledge about dune 2 (it's not an established thing at all here in china), and their general consensus is that the story was weird but made sense their main thoughts: 1. chani + paul love story seems rushed. i'd agree, because of the (good) decision to compress time from years in the desert to less than 9 months, it does feel a little rushed 2. wtf was up with the nukes? also agreed, since it was one of the weirder book inserts to me anyways. kindof wish that was just left out 3. harkonnen boy is hot hot HOT
