the animated series batman really did strike an excellent balance. he's a misanthrope, but still pretty positive; he's a good detective, but he only does really dumb poo poo on occasion; he's distinctly bruce wayne, but also batman; he's a smartass, but not a dick (at least until the later episodes); he's serious, but not grim, etc.

its one of the very few kids shows i still enjoy

its really well written and didint treat kids as idiots, for the most part.

the 2 parter heart of steel freaked me out as a kid with the idea of robots replacing people and i think thats a good thing

also the dark-deco style is so excellent

i wouldn't say tawny newsome being in the writer's room is a good thing either. she's not a writer on lower decks, just a voice actor, and whenever they do writing it's usually pretty bad. that said i actually don't know if she is any good, and it can't really be any worse than the current crop of ex-discovery writers, but i'm not hopeful

i watched some interviews w/ her and she seems to actually be a star trek fan, which is better than anyone working on the live action stuff. im not getting my hopes up. generally actors in the writers room is a terrible idea.

setting it 1200 years in the future would let them do some really wild stuff with the federation and earth. naturally, i expect this opportunity will be squandered

its almost certainly 1200 years in the future because they think the current stuff is "tainted" by legacy fan expectations

i liked Shards of Earth and just finished the sequel, Eyes of the Void which i was more luke warm on. Its not bad, but it basically ends on a setup for the 3rd book which comes out next month.

Whats some other stuff people have been reading recently? Some of the stuff i really liked in the last few years

A Memory Called Empire (the sequel was ok)
Ninefox Gambit (i liked the sequels too)
House of Suns
Other Tchaikovsky stuff like Children of Time, Elder Race, and The Expert System's Brother/Champion

have the sequel sitting around, liked memory a lot.

been reading through book three of whatever the big ship at the end of the universe trilogy is called. don't think it has the snap of the first two books but still has a bit of the magic

the sequel is not bad, i think it just feels rushed and i really liked the first one alot so that kind of impacts expectations.

Are you thinking of "The Exiled Fleet"? I think i was gonna try that one but never got around to it.

distortion park posted:

I've just started Station Eleven, seems good so far.

The Shadow of the Torturer - liked this, the sequel less so
Red Plenty - OK
Spy novels (A Perfect Spy, The Quiet American) - excellent genre imo

I think you've already read Ancillary Justice.

Ancillary Justice was good. I should probably try the sequels.

graham greene and john le carre are a good call. throw in some len deighton too

also if you havent read them go ahead and work your way through the classics of the hardboiled detective genre, especially raymond chandler (start with the big sleep) and dashiell hammett (red harvest will knock you on your rear end)

i think i might take a break from scifi and do these cause i saw them recommended elsewhere and just forgot about them.

Archduke Frantz Fanon posted:

"the salvagers" is the trilogy name

cool, putting it on the list

teah the whole series is great. there's also another book, Provenance, i think, that takes place in the same universe, also worth reading.

all of the murderbot diaries books are excellent and worth reading too imo. most of them are shorter, like, novellas i guess. they're a lot of fun.

i read the first murderbot and was kinda meh on it. Amazon loving loooooooves to recomend the sequels tho.

what was the whole deal with saucer separation anyways

the idea was the crew would head to the "Battle bridge" on the lower section and civilians would go to the saucer section so the crew could fight while the saucer section flies away.

in reality the saucer section has no warp drives, only impulse power, so it cant really get away from anything. in generations where they blow up the enterprise, they separate the saucer from the exploding engine section. but then since the saucer has no significant propulsion, it crashes into the planet below.

tl;dr: the saucer section is a big life boat

the problem is SG1 doesnt have a good release. the best official video quality is on the blu ray where the studio did an upscale. It looks significantly better than the dvds, but the audio is total poo poo cause they hosed up the channel mix.

there's also someone in tviv with a direct line to some writers and producers, none of the writers rooms coordinate even though its supposed to be a unified continuity lol

thats how you end up with three separate, recent series/season finales with starfleet ships somehow getting taken over by something and used against the federation

they should tell the writers and producers to fire themselves and get someone better

its so funny. all the shows on the new streaming 'max' app have, instead of writers and directors and actors being credited as such, just thrown them all into a single field as 'creators' - which is in violation of all sorts of contracted agreements about exactly how credits must be presented. and it wasnt even some sort of power play from WBD, the engineers on the app had a hard deadline to launch and zero guidance as to how to merge a dozen different libraries of content with a dozen different idiosyncratic ways of structuring them so they threw them all into a single field and called it a day, and that tech decision might lead directly to strikes from the DGA and PGA

it was probably some dickhead product owner who decided that the kids would like it more if it said "creator" because thats their word for person who makes stuff on tiktok
