Hobbies, Crafts, & Houses: Everything, all at once
This is the place to post about home fix-it ideas, building projects, hobbyist stuff (like model building, gardening, crocheting, sewing, woodworking) and so forth. We're really excited to see what goon ingenuity will come up with here!
Hobbies, Crafts, & Houses is a place for people of all skill levels to come seeking advice about their hobbies, crafts, and houses. I know it's tempting to dunk on people who come in here with "dumb questions" or without providing enough information, but please consider that you were once a stupid newbie too. If someone's doing something wrong, tell them why it's wrong. If someone asks the wrong questions, guide them to the right questions. I'll be judging this case-by-case so don't feel like you can't pal around with your friends or dunk on someone who's earned it, but please give people a chance to learn before you go on the offensive.

- Universal SA Rules apply here, just like any other sub forum. Act like a jerk at your own risk.
- If people troll threads, post unsafe/malicious advice, etc., please report them.
- Quick questions should go in the Fix It Fast thread.
- Give your threads informative titles and icons! Make it clear whether your thread is a demonstration/how-to, a request for help, a current project, a megathread, or whatever, and if possible, include the kind of project (sewing, wood working, etc.) in the title as well. Vague or lovely thread titles may either be edited or your thread may get gassed.
- If you're asking for help for a project or repair, be sure to include in your post sufficient details/diagrams/photos/model names/etc. that people can actually offer useful advice. For some projects, a non-specific idea of your location may be helpful. Insulation needs in northern Europe are different from California, and different plants grow in Australia and Canada.
- If you post images, be sure to host them on an image hosting site such as https://imgur.com. Or wherever, provided the images work and don't violate the hosting site's TOS regarding inlining. Please avoid direct-linking from Zillow or other MLS listings as those images often vanish and break threads when the listings are removed.
- No discussing console modifications that defeat DRM. No, not even to play your 100% legit backup copy of Sonic '06. RGB/HDMI out mods are ok.
- Hobbies, Crafts, & Houses is not TFR, please take DIY firearms chat there. We're not prepared to moderate that sort of discussion in this space and TFR has actual expertise on what you can legally DIY for guns in your region anyway.
- Remember this is the internet. Under no circumstances should advice in this forum replace a consultation with a professional. Just as we warn elsewhere that some problems require advice from a doctor or a lawyer, the same holds true here. For emergencies, asking a goon is not a substitute for calling an electrician, plumber, the gas company or whatever.
- Somethingawful.com is not responsible for any inaccurate information in DIY & Hobbies, so keep this in mind if you build your house based on advice in this forum and the roof collapses on your 98-year-old step-grandmother.
- Posting in Hobbies, Crafts, & Houses is not a substitute for using Google to find your answers. If you demonstrate a repeated pattern of failing to do the most basic research, you risk probes or worse.
- Don't try to defend your godawful countertops or bathroom tile with poverty. If you have a tile countertop you need not be worried by this, you've suffered more than enough.

We're happy to help ensure your complicated system of pulleys and levers accounts for the various loads it will need to handle. No beating around the bush here, that is something best done with your partner(s). Do not link or embded pictures of their uses or people engaged in activities related to them.
