Lifespan posted:Sadly just got confirmation that a long time friend of mine is dumb. Asked if he got his vax and he said "No, it was rushed." After I explained that actually it was not rushed, just prioritized and fast tracked through the government sign off aspect, he then explained he "couldn't take 2 weeks off because he has to provide for his family." His family is only his wife who has a full time government position she has admitted to just remotely sleeping through for the last year and he just spent his stimulus check on a $1200 guitar. But to drive this further, his job provides him with PTO and as we all know... getting a vaccine does not require 2 weeks off, maybe a day or two after the second shot. After explaining that as well, he just said that he has been exposed to it dozens of times now so isn't worried. And I have not talked to him since and have no plans to. From a few pages back, but I've lost quite a few old friends over the last few years, and distanced myself from a few family members for similar reasons, and it's really sad. The degree of infectious stupidity and irrational fear-mongering and conspiracy theories and just general denial of reality has been pretty impressive. Where once I might have humored folks or just changed the subject over "crazy opinions", I think we've all seen that poo poo fester and grow and result in Monty Python levels of wacky poo poo like Dermp Trermp becoming president (lol). gently caress 'em--they can eat poo poo and stay the hell away from me.

From a few pages back, but this made my day better. This is exactly the way to handle idiots spouting disingenuous bullshit and "just asking questions" (at least in a context where you can't ask them why they're a stupid rear end in a top hat and you have to play the decorum game)--just treat the dipshit like they're an especially dim child and calmly state facts and don't even engage. Let them be mad about it. I could just feel Young's eyeroll, even though she was too professional to let it reach her face.

Gutter Phoenix posted:I feel like poo poo really went off the rails in early 2016 when those Bundy scumbags invaded a national wildlife preserve, occupied it for 40 days, and were set free by a jury of especially dumb Oregonians. This was from a few pages back, but it really resonated. Although we had decades of bullshit and Reagan as president and constant right-wing nonsense happening throughout the 80s and 90s, that was the first time I remember feeling really shocked, like I had entered some kind of parallel universe. It was like, "...wait...we watched all this poo poo live on television for weeks, and the decision is "nah, nevermind"?! And everyone's just going to nod and say "yeah, that's too bad". What the gently caress is even happening?!" And then Trump as president, which weakened the gently caress out of my general faith in humanity, but I was able to comfort myself and sorta rationalize it a little as "people are just ignorant as gently caress and have no idea what the they're doing; that's too bad". And then the orange shitgoblin was almost reelected and we barely dodged "Trump2: poo poo Gets Even More Real" despite four full years of absolute batshit insanity on a daily basis. At that point there was no more excusing people on general principle. In a weird way, it's sort of helped, because I kind of gave up on the idea that "most people are okay" and now I'm not quite so shocked and upset when people do stupid poo poo like refusing a free vaccine and killing off their loved ones and their parents and their own kids to own the libs. lol

The vaccine takes a lot of the bite out of it if you're unlucky enough to get it anyway. The rate of death for all vaccinated folks who have gotten a breakthrough case of covid after being vaccinated looks like it varies from a tiny fraction of a percent to, at most, maybe 2% judging from the info on the chart at the bottom of the page here: https://www.kff.org/policy-watch/covid-19-vaccine-breakthrough-cases-data-from-the-states/ (no info for Louisiana specifically) Granted, common sense says it's going to be higher risk for someone who's 92, and who knows what delta might change (not to mention hospitals being hosed), but it's certainly not a done deal if he gets it. Hang in there, and good luck. I'm sorry you have to deal with stupid assholes.

A friend of mine made a good FB post today urging folks to wear their masks. Someone, of course, had to respond with the typical noise about how viruses are so much smaller than the holes in the mask that "it won't do anything". Giving her the benefit of the doubt (I know), I explained how the point of wearing a mask is to protect others and slow the spread, and how, yes, holes in masks are larger than viruses, but are smaller than the aerosolized droplets of fluid from your potentially infected lungs, mouth, and nose. I threw in a comment asking if she thought heart surgeons were afraid of catching a heart attack, and finished with, "wearing a mask means you care about other folks' welfare". The response? "Wearing a mask means you care about other folks welfare?! Do other folks concealed carry to care about my welfare?" I...I just...that's...something right there. aas Bandit fucked around with this message at 06:47 on Sep 22, 2021 |
