As a recently laid off mechanic, what the gently caress? Why would you bailout a dead airline industry with no revenue TWICE? How about a bailout for actual people instead of companies that don't need to exist. I was pissed when I heard about the first airline bailout of 2020 because I knew it would go down exactly like 2008. I remember the guy on NPR saying that the 2020 airline bailout money was 'earmarked' for preventing layoffs. Turns out all the major airlines (to varying degrees, American Airlines being the worst) took that 2020 bailout money and used it for buying back their own stocks. If you are a CEO of a huge airline and own lots of stock in that company, buying up shares increases your stock value making you richer and look better at your job (short term) without actually doing anything about the fact that your entire industry is out of business indefinitely.

It pisses me off, I don't want taxpayer money being wasted on corporate welfare. Doubly so for corporate welfare for a trade I was a part of that no longer needs to exist. I'm unemployed, I'm taking online classes to be useful at something else. Airline businesses though, an actual concept that is not even a person, we gotta bail them out because their revenue continues to not exist. They serve no purpose, why should american taxes pay for them? Call it a cyclical or structural change, but airline travel is an order of magnitude less than previous years and that is not changing in the near future.

Sorry, I meant to say AAAAAAAAAAAaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa :aaaaa:

Yeah, blaming the Dems or Biden at this point is misguided in my opinion. 66+ million people chose to vote for a blatant liar, racist, misogynist con-man. Running a more socialist candidate wouldn't have helped (there is a reason Trump tried to paint Biden and Harris as socialists). The people of this country are the problem, not the candidates. Trump is just a symptom, not the disease.
Thanks for saying this.

I was confused by reactions about this election result somehow being a failure on part of the Dem party to do better against a president as bad as Trump. The Dems could have a much better or much worse candidate, they could have campaigned on stronger policies, there's a lot the Dems could have done different. But 66 million and counting people chose Trump in spite of everything. There's not a lot you can do to reach people when these past 4 years of Trump hasn't changed their mind.

Does anyone honestly believe that if Bernie or Obama were running in 2020 that the Dems would have pulled off that landslide victory? 68 million people voted for Donald Trump. A different candidate/campaign could have pulled more votes from the left, sure. There would still be 68 million Americans voting for Trump.

God not this again. Ok, listen. There are no launch orders for nuking our own cities. Every codephrase Trump could execute with the nuclear football is for a specific plan of action. You don't just pick any target and fire ze missiles.

Certain subs/silos are designated for attacking certain lists of targets. Those missiles need to be configured to arm and detonate over their target and nowhere else. There's a lot of safeties and checks drilled in to ensure all procedures are followed. We don't have nukes aimed at ourselves. If Trump wanted to do that, he'd have to get with the military to develop new plans to nuke US cities.

I sure wish my Biden vote from California wasn't worth less than half of what a vote from Wyoming counts for in the EC.

But I'm sure we'll turn things around in the 2022 Senate election! That's where 1 vote from Wyoming counts as much as 65 votes in California for choosing Senate seats. And we wonder how scumbags like McConnell continue to plague the senate. Maybe we should fix the constitution so everyone's vote is worth 1 vote. Replace the Senate with a parliament.

Those people voted for Trump. Trump after all the horrible things he's done to this country in 4 years. There's no way you could have reached those people. Trump voters are indoctrinated, what you campaign for makes no difference because they never heard you. Tbh I don't think Trump voters even heard Trump's own campaign. I want to believe it, but also doubt the cops can see the writing on the wall. There was the pink-haired woman who is probably going to be released the next day without charges. And the pool float mouthbreather who wasn't actually charged for assault (yet) and a sheriff that went out of his way to do nothing about it. Meanwhile Trump authorized US Marshalls to kill the dude who shot a patriot prayer guy and no one did anything about it.
Actually it was just a tweet Trump made moments after the guy was gunned down by police. Nonetheless telling that Trump would want to take credit for ordering the execution of someone that killed an openly racist MAGA.

There were three conflicting stories. The first police press release said Reinoehl had his hand on a gun and that they found shell-casings in his vehicle. This is likely the story cops thought they could get away with, it doesn't show up in the official report of the shooting. The remaining conflicting police accounts are that Reinoehl was reaching for a rifle in his car and that Reinoehl was reaching for his concealed weapon. At least these agree that he never pulled out a weapon. Witnesses interviewed by a NY Times reporter say the marshals never even identified themselves before firing and describe it more like an execution.

So their official take is these cops shot a suspect to death because they thought he was reaching for a gun, although they can't agree on which gun. I'll never understand how the court of law allows this insane double-standard where an on-duty officer can shoot someone because they feel threatened or think they were reaching for a gun. Imagine if someone gunned down an officer because they felt threatened and the court let them off just like that. That is what our criminal justice system thinks is acceptable, but only for cops.

Defunding the police is a start, baby steps.

One of the most dangerous things to come out of BLM vs MAGA counter-protests is the police figuring out that instead of shooting and and tear gassing non-violent protestors themselves, they could just escort in some MAGA chuds and let them do the violence. The police escort and police presence further emboldens MAGA to terrorize people with impunity because they already know the cops will take their side. They've sprayed mace at protestors with cops standing there, doing nothing. But the cops aren't doing nothing, they are protecting MAGA so they can freely assault people that can't fight back.

McCain and Romney both ran on endless war, including Russia, and the American people were just like, "yeah... no, gently caress that." Obama was supposed to be the guy to get us out of Iraq and Afghanistan, and McCain made it easy for him by campaigning on staying in those countries, literally, for "one hundred years." McCain wanted to engage Russia over its attack on the country of Georgia, and nobody wanted anything to do with any of that. Romney wanted to escalate the mideast wars and start some poo poo with Russia, which also seemed laughable at the time. It's literally stupid to think we made it through the Cold War without firing a shot, and then in 2012 we were going to suddenly engage with the Russian Federation over some Eastern bloc bullshit.

I think in hindsight, one of the longterm consequences of Bush lying us into Iraq is that the American people afterward reflexively wanted NOTHING TO DO WITH any military action, especially in regards to Syria and Russia. Maybe in the end, that will have been a bad thing, I don't know. I'm generally against wars, but I have no idea how to deal with Russia at this point.
The cold war is still a political reality, as much as Russia still occupies Ukraine. Ukraine wasn't a member of NATO but Russia invading in 2014 was the kinda thing the US ought to have moved aggressively against. By which I mean made an ultimatum that Russia withdraw immediately or we formally declare war on Russia. It was a game of footsie and they just invaded Ukraine like the world would be too shocked to stop them, and then we were.

It's an ultimatum to stop annexing a neighboring country. Really the only distinction here being that that Ukraine is non-NATO so the US isn't obligated to do so. So we aren't obligated, that doesn't mean we should default to appeasement of an aggressive state.

Trying to decide who should or shouldn't get the $2,000. Come on. Give $2,000 to all the millionaires, all the homeless, and everyone else. Everyone gets $2,000. We don't have time to debate who does or does not 'deserve' or 'need' the money. Let republicans start deciding who is too rich to get $2,000, suddenly you'll have the rich getting all the money again. That's not what we want. Just give the bailout to everyone.

What I don't get is how there were so few officers in the first place. Someone made a decision to have that many officers in no riot gear on the 6th. The police knew the chuds were coming, they warned vendors not to come yesterday. Police set up some barricades and manned them with what I could only call skeleton crews. If the police thought they might, potentially, not have enough security, isn't it their job to address that? Congress was also aware of the issue so perhaps some congressional committee is to blame for not taking calling additional government agencies for security? Surely there is some person or people whose job it is to protect congress and lol they suck at it.

Absolutely does not forgive the fact that some officers waved the chuds along. "Just a few bad apples" like that doesn't bring shame and dishonor on every officer. They had no idea what people in that mob would do once they got inside the capitol.
