I'm escaping to the ONE PLACE that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism.... SPAAAACE

nz was meant to have an election yesterday, but it got postponed to october 17 because of covid. there are also referendums on euthanansia and freaking legalising it.

how does it work
nz uses a ‘mixed-member proportional’ (mmp) electoral system. basically you vote for your preferred party and your local candidate. parties that win more than 5% or get an electorate seat enter parliament. we don’t have a senate or house of lords or whatever. this video shows how mmp works:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pljoleVHFug

who is going to win
the labour party probably. jacinda ardern is insanely popular and the opposition is a mess. the biggest unknown is whether labour can get enough votes to govern alone – this hasn’t happened under mmp before. there’s always a chance that labour can gently caress things up though.

here’s what polling looks like:

the big upswing for labour in may is p much entirely thanks to the government’s covid response:

jacinda leveraged the coercive power of the state (ftw) to lock the whole country down as soon as we had community transmission. as a result, we’ve only had 1,815 cases and 25 deaths. in the meantime the major opposition party imploded – their leader got rolled for being too mean, then his replacement quit after 53 days because he didn’t realise how hard the job was lol. their current leader is a stone cold freak.

who’s running
here are the only parties that matter (probably)

the government parties

labour is the big centre-left party, they haven’t really achieved anything over the past 3 years because they’re afraid of making anybody mad. jacinda is ruthless, a very good communicator, and personally very likeable. they’re desperately trying to avoid releasing any policy at the moment, and being rewarded for it

new zealand first is the populist conservative party – anti-immigrant, but anti-neoliberal etc. vaguely similar to ukip, but with more complicated racial politics. they deserve at least part of the blame for blocking a bunch of reforms this term. the party pretty much is winston peters, who quit the national party in the 90s after they went economically liberal. it’s looking unlikely that they will return to parliament, though they do traditionally outperform polls.

the greens are a left-environmentalist party, who have shed most of the hippy anti-vaxx stuff. they have a co-leadership model – james shaw is more mainstream/centrist, while marama davis has a stronger activist background. traditionally the beneficiaries of support from leftish voters who are pissed off with labour, they’re currently polling in the danger zone around 5%. im voting for these guys!!!

the opposition parties

national is the big centre-right party, though they’ve got an increasing number of religious freaks. they still haven’t come to terms with being in opposition, following 9 years under john key’s premiership. judith collins is pretty hard-right economically, tough on crime, and has a socially liberal record on most conscience issues. she’s probably most well known for featuring in a book on her party’s dirty tricks. cool!

the association of consumers and taxpayers () is a libertarian party that has polled below 1% for most of the past decade. little david seymour has successfully built their profile through his work on euthanasia legislation, and by appealing to free speech and gun crybabies following the 2019 christchurch mosque attacks.

some parties that are also running

in vague order of popularity:
  • the māori party – indigenous sovereignty party, broke away from labour. were in parliament until 2017, when they got punished for going into coalition with national.
  • new conservative party – american-style reactionaries. bathroom sickos etc.
  • the opportunities party – tech freaks, yimbys, ubi enthusiasts
  • advance new zealand – q-anon, anti-5g, covid is a hoax
  • aotearoa legalise cannabis party – they want to legalise cannabis in aotearoa
  • vision – christian conservatives
  • outdoors – q-anon with a conservationist bent
  • one – christian conservatives

what is going to happen in the referendums
the euthanasia one is probably going to pass, and the weed one is a coinflip. you can read about them here:
referendums.govt.nz

Please note Collins is out if they don't win (they likely won't) meaning National will have had three leadership changes in the span of less than 12 months.

These are the ones that campaign on stability.

yeah it wasn’t a good call for them to do go in to the coalition. One of the leaders had a hate boner for Labour (although to be fair it was somewhat deserved for some Treaty fuckery), but it turns out their voting base really (unsurprisingly) didn’t want to team up with National and abandoned them entirely to go back to voting for Labour.

In my commute there's a votesafe billboard right next to the new cons binding referenda one, so if you look at them from the right angle they read "LETHAL DOSE? Yes please"

quote:

Central policies in every election included a return to a mediaeval lifestyle, known as the "Great Leap Backwards" and (superficially) the restoration of a monarchy supposedly based on the Scottish Jacobite line, in the name of Bonnie Prince Geoffie the reluctant. At a deeper level the party invoked the political system of Tibetan Buddhism, with "stspm" (singularly transferable spirit possession monarchy) used as justification for the selection of Bonnie Prince Geoffie as the undeniable head of the McState. This embodied the principles stated by the ancient Greeks that "no-one who seeks power should be allowed it." Bonnie Prince Geoffie refused consistently and permanently to have anything to do with the authority that this position gave him, and ran for all he was worth and never had anything to do with party again, thus proving his indisputable worthiness for the position.

One of the (possibly apocryphal) policies they had was transitioning New Zealand to driving on the right-hand side of the road; in order to minimise confusion this would be phased in over the course of five years, starting with the heaviest vehicles on the road and working their way up to the lightest.

Labour was created by socialists and the trade unions, but only the latter have really stuck with them. Socialists probably have to vote Greens as the structure of MMP means they are currently the only viable tool for moving the government left, but that of course doesn't mean they do (this is doing double duty for both socialists voting for them, and the Greens moving the government left). There are a number of socialist parties, many of which fail to register, but none of them have been able to gain an electorate or poll high enough to get exposure in the last 50 years so they mostly concentrate on activism over electioneering.

Pretty much. Winston is himself Māori, and is mocking the idea by calling him Pāora Heke Goldsmith, Pāora being a straight transliteration of Paul and Heke being a fairly notable Māori surname.
