Hello fellow crafters, fellow interior designers, fellow future previous owners! It's Secret Santa time in DIY!

Important Dates:

October 25th - Registration closed
October 30th - Pairings sent
December 4th - Ship-by date
December 22nd - Deadbeat date - if you haven't provided proof of shipping by this date, you will be banned.

How it works!
  1. Sign up at the google form below.
  2. Provide all the details requested in the form, including a valid email address. I will be the only person seeing this email address, it will not be given out to anyone else.
  3. Post in this thread with your likes, dislikes, where in DIY you hail from, and any special constraints on the gifts you can or would like to receive.
(If you are of the vegan persuasion please mention it or PM me so I can make sure you are not matched with a leatherworker or beekeeper or other animal-related DIY specialist.)
  4. I match all y'all up and you get an email from corgskiSA@gmail.com with your santee's information.
  5. DIY something (or purchase something DIY-related) and drop it in the mail by the ship-by date, then email proof to corgskiSA@gmail.com
  6. Wait an interminably long time while trying to not hear little drummer boy on the radio or whatever it is you do.
  7. Receive your gift and share it in the thread!

But I'm not good enough at <insert craft here>
Nonsense! DIY is a forum for people of all skill levels, and I mean that. I would love to receive somebody's first project, as would anyone else signing up in this thread! My advice would be to not bite off more than you can chew - if you've never sewn before, perhaps you shouldn't start with a gown - but to pick something that would be meaningful to you and to the recipient!

oXDemosthenesXo posted:

Its more about the love and care than how epic or perfect it is. I'd be stoked to get an unfinished handcarved spoon if that's all you have time/skill/effort for. Actually I'd love a handcarved spoon.

How much should I spend?
Aim to spend around $20-40 total - that doesn't mean you can't spend more or less, but please try to make the gift something you would see and go "yeah I'd pay at least $15+shipping for that." Don't forget to include shipping costs when budgeting for this! If you're filthy rich and really enjoy spending stupid amounts of money, go hog wild but remember your gift isn't going to be any more valuable as a result.

Proof of shipment rule
  • No proof and your santee doesn't get a package? You're a deadbeat and you'll catch a ban. When you ship your gift, you must provide proof of shipment. Email corgskiSA@gmail.com with the username of the person you're buying for and the tracking information. If anything goes pear shaped, at least we can figure out where. If you live near your santee and want to drop it off yourself, email me and tell me that you did.
  • You must provide proof of shipment before the deadline. Please put the tracking number in your email. If you do not have a tracking number, you must EMAIL me a photo/scan of the shipping receipt.
  • If you hit any speed bumps, have any questions, or need anything at all you can email or PM me.

Accepted types of proof
  • Tracking number from UPS, Fedex, USPS, Canada Post, whatever
  • Photo or scanned image of your shipping receipt with your username written on it. Most receipts have the zip code of the recipient, so this is how I will check these.

If you have any questions or want to donate additional gifts or anything else related to DIY:SS, please PM me or email corgskiSA@gmail.com

Hi I would like to make something out of wood for someone, but I don't know if I should sign up for this? I can not afford to buy gifts for people right now if they want something thats not a hand made wooden knickknack.

Handmade is more than fine, I don't think anyone here would complain and I think most if not all of the participants would prefer it!

Soon it will not be October 25th anywhere in the world, and that means that soon registration is closed!

mediaphage and fuzzy_logic I still need you to verify your participation by posting your wants/needs/grand desires in this thread!

And registration is now closed!

Thank you to everyone who signed up. Your santee assignments will be arriving in your email by the end of the week, get excited!

Some trivia:

There were 34 signups in total.

The vast majority of signups are from the US, followed by Canada in a distant second.

The most popular answer to "Do you have insulated stairs in your house?" is "No" with four responses. The second most popular answer was "Yes" with two responses. You poor insulated souls. There were also a lot of variations on "I am protected," but no two were the same.

dangit, missed this by a few days

Don't suppose there's some kind of second chance/late signup potential?

If anyone has to drop or (god forbid) gets deadbeated you can be first on the list for rescue santas!

Keep in mind, it is absolutely ok if packages arrive after xmas, as long as I've received proof of shipping with a tracking number before Dec. 22nd.

I also specifically have the extra two weeks between the ship-by date and the deadline for tracking numbers so people have time to work our crises like this, don't feel bad if you have to ship a little late or go for a cheaper, slower shipping option.

We do technically have until the 22nd and the 4th was just the target/goal to aim for, right? Or is like the 4th the day you get probed, and the 22nd the day you get banned or something like that?

Correct, the 4th is a target so most of the packages can be in the labyrinthine mess of the postal service before xmas shipping delays get too insane but as long as I have a valid tracking number and proof of shipping by the 22nd I'm not going on a banning spree. (And even then, I'd be reaching out to get details before pushing buttons. I hate pushing buttons, it makes me feel lovely.)

Hey everyone! Just to prevent future confusion if you send out a thank you card or gift to your santa that's fine but please make it clear that it's a thank you and not the main gift! Both me and tuo's santa just had a bit of a panic making sure wires weren't crossed.

Youíre fine! I just got a message from your Santa whose gift hasnít arrived yet wondering if you got assigned two Santas somehow!

Happy holidays everyone!

The deadbeat deadline has come and passed and Iím still missing a few tracking numbers.

Iíll be going through the list over the next couple days to reach out to the people who havenít sent anything to ensure their santees donít get left out in the cold this holiday season, with no insulated stairs or melted siding to keep them warm.

If anyone is interested in being a rescue Santa as well, now is the time to PM or email me.

Did you get my tracking number? I emailed it a couple days ago but didn't get a reply, figured you were just busy but my email account has also been acting weird lately so figured I'd ask here...

Yep I got yours!

Currently I am waiting on tracking numbers or other proof of shipping from the following 5 4 2 posters:

fuzzy_logic - contacted me
pantx0r - santee is fine with waiting

McSpergin - tracking received
Carbohydrates - gift was received and posted in this thread
mediaphage - tracking received

I've reached out privately to all of them (check your email and discord messages please!) to see if I missed the tracking number somewhere in the path between my email and the master spreadsheet. And if not, I want to try to work out a solution for an interim gift while they finish their main gift because 2020 is a hell year and I'm honestly cutting everyone some slack.

If I don't hear back in the next few days, however,

So postmortem, seeing as weíre the forum that leaves their decorations up way too late (I just unstuck this thread today 😅) what worked well and what can we do better?

Obviously international shipping is a nightmare and a way for santa and santee to message anonymously would make things easier, but does anyone have anything else that was either run well or that theyíd like to change for 2021?

Honeylight finally, finally fuckin' made it there. Tuo PM'd me and mentioned he was gonna do a thank you post but he seems like a busy dude and hasn't gotten to it yet, so sorry I'm stealing your scoop Thanks for putting up with this whole bullshit process though, I'm glad you like it!

Yay! I'm so glad it finally showed up!

quote:

Mostly just wanted to say one thing we could do better next time: probably should share the tracking information with the recipient when it ships, so they can monitor it. I don't think that would ruin the surprise, cuz you still don't know what it is or really who sent it. The first time Honeylight made it out of customs, on my end USPS tracking showed it as successfully delivered, while on Tuo's end DHL had actually held it at some warehouse and then sent it back. Since he didn't know he should be looking for it, he wasn't aware any of this was happening until I started posting about it long after the box had already started on its way back here.

That's something on my list to address this year for sure! Hopefully (and I say that because I already bought the domain) we'll have a SASS-esque automated system this year. But even if not I'll be forwarding out tracking numbers as soon as I get them.
