My least favorite part is the part where I can't recommend it to most of my friends because they were never inoculated against anime cheesecake nonsense

Eh, as someone who doesn’t enjoy that stuff the only part that felt really egregious and uncomfortable was at the very start during the intro when it shows a schoolgirl seemingly having to flash her thigh to summon a giant robot.

I immediately thought “oh no I’ve been conned into buying some gross anime bullshit this is gonna be painful” and then it never happened again for the entire wild ride the game took me on, so it was alright.

The whole ‘but they’re all naked in the robots’ thing is a total nothingburger unless you’re really scandalised by some bare shoulders and upper backs, I didn’t even notice it was a thing until the game pointed it out.

I feel like the only people who care that much about it are the people who do the handwringing about anime in general, Vanillaware’s artists are loud and proud about being horny sometimes but none of that shows in 13S with anyone under 18.

Just how many mistakes have you suffered on the way here?

An uncountable number, to be sure.
Well, as noted the girls almost all have their robot summoning marks in places that would normally be covered by clothes, while the guys just have it on their hands or whatever. So a little of it shows up.

I'm extremely allergic to the typical anime bullshit and I thought 13 Sentinels very very light on that.

There's no beach episode and you don't even kill a god using the power of friendship.

Didn't I kill him with a HELICOPTER?
The start of a character's arc being that his mind is blown away by bloomer shorts is pretty anime.

And it's good.

Just got this with the sale going on, know nothing except it's good, is there anything I should be aware of in terms of missables or anything?

Nothing's missable, though it's possible you'll end up in a position where you can't unlock something you want immediately because you already spent your funds on something else. That's not a serious roadblock, mind, just pointing it out so you don't get stressed about what you "need" to do first. It's fine if you just play the game as you like.

You can replay everything after beating the game and replay the RTS stuff as much as you want to clear side objectives, so nah.

Also worth knowing you get more than enough of the stuff unlocking currency I can’t remember the name of to unlock everything well before the end of the game so feel free to unlock whatever whenever you want.

At one point you'll be asked to find a coin, it's not immediately obvious that you should check i think a birdhouse nearby. It's the only thing people (me) get stuck on. Other than that, go wild and post your thoughts!

Yeah it's this. I spent at least half an hour if not more, watching girls talking about boys and chow, trying to figure out the cat feeding.

Finding the coin is the second hardest.

I've been on a Vanillaware back catalogue investigation recently and I got around to playing Odin Sphere, and now that I have played Odin Sphere I now understand how this team in particular was able to write 13 Sentinels. This is progress for me because I have no idea how the team that wrote Unicorn Overlord wrote 13 Sentinels.

Odin Sphere is striking in a lot of ways (insert every comment you've ever heard about the artwork and the female character design here) but what really hit me, retrospective as I'm being, is how obviously it is a prototype for the kind of story 13 Sentinels would be. Being such an early effort it is jagged and rough and the script is iffy (and, apparently, often mistranslated) and the voice acting is kinda wooden usually but beyond all that stuff it is taking a very big swing; it's got multiple viewpoint protagonists, whose stories are all happening in parallel but out of sync, whose plot events are sometimes skipped over in their own stories, all caught up in events incomprehensibly beyond them and woven into a narrative whose twists and turns account for not only each character's perspective and shifting stakes but also that of the player, relationships on which you'll have taken like five different positions by the time the credits roll, webs of schemes and secrets and deceptions and dramatic irony. Stuff happens to these people, and the shifting comprehension of what it all means to them is what compels you through it all. Also am I hallucinating or is Ingway voiced by the same guy as voices Fluffy (in English, at least)? (Ingway consistently has my favourite line deliveries. I think his single best performance is in a non-canon scene from the collected bad ends where he gets to briefly reunite with Mercedes as she's dying and he gives this whole "gods, strike me down" speech which consumes the scenery as vociferously as it does the heart)

Also has anyone posted this Vanillaware('s action titles) retrospective itt yet? It's good. I like this guy generally and apparently there's eventually going to be a followup about Grim Grimoire, 13 Sentinels and Unicorn Overlord.

Anyway it has been 3 and a half years since I finished and last played 13 Sentinels and it still finds its way into my consciousness at a steady rate of about once every two weeks if anyone was wondering.

I miss people posting their live reactions.

this is one of the few Japanese games I recommend to be played with the English dub. Kaiji Tang, Allegra Clark, Zach Aguilar and Erica Mendez are so much fun. It's also one of the deeply missed Billy Kametz's last roles, as the coolest guy, Nenji Ogata.

By far the cruelest irony of fiction is that at its peak it is unforgettable, and so can almost never be rediscovered. I saw a really stupid take going around that players are becoming more forgetful of stories (this was itself based on an unrelated videogamedunkey video with a misleading clickbait title, to which someone had decided to respond "but what if this literally was true?" and proceeded to conjecture that this was the fault of players and something to do with twitch streamers (and to be fair, there is somewhat of a Thing that can happen where a large streamer is less able to engage with details due to the parallel workload of running a stream and starts misunderstanding the plot and their misunderstandings then become Discourse by way of their followings, but, that is not actually people forgetting plots, so)). To this I can only respond that, no, you goddamn idiot, it is the job, the charge, of the writer, to be unforgettable, to not allow you to forget, to hit you with the drama so hard that it imprints on your soul (insert entirety of David Mamet's memo to the writers of The Unit here)

That said I think it's a game that will hold up very well to a retrospective playthrough, I mean, hell, it kinda has you doing it a lot while on your first playthrough (or at least, it clearly wants you to), I think every second of it still hits, even the bit where you have to feed the cat, the scenes are still compelling, the line reads are still direct from the heart, and the art still supernovas off the screen - and of course, even long after you've put together the big picture of what's been happening it's still incredibly satisfying to connect little details after the fact, or even just to discover how many tiny nitpicking questions the game somehow manages to have answers for.

Whatever Vanillaware's doing next, I hope it's something more amenable than Unicorn was to just stopping and staring at. That, or the chance to actually play Muramasa on something I own (insert Vanillaware PC Port Discourse here).
