Fun fact that gets posted every time somebody mentions the Atari Lynx: at least one third of it was empty space because old people in focus groups told them if they were going to pay that much for a toy they expected it to be bigger

I think it was just the cassette without the case so there was no context. I had it when I was in elementary so it was just this cool thing as far as I was concerned. Went along with my 1970-80s space ship books. Found out what it was from some random internet post mentioning it which got me to look it up. Speaking of space stuff, why was the artist who did all of the really cool space ship designs in the 70s and 80s? I had a couple books illustrated by them. E: John Harris. I had like a book of his collected illustrations. I read it until the spine fell apart. -Zydeco- has a new favorite as of 17:46 on Sep 23, 2020 |

Friend of mine at school had a Lynx with Chip's Challenge and I think one of the Epyx Summer/Winter/California Games cartridges. It was an absolute beast of a handheld, but the tech behind it was really strong. The chipset was designed by the folks who made the Amiga and it rivalled regular TV consoles in terms of pure processing power.

Wikipedia has it covered. Short version is it was a PSA created by the FBI in 1989, and they were able to get one of the biggest companies that distributed arcade machines to include it, in part as a thank you to the FBI who had been helping stop counterfeit game imports. It's basically in the same vein as all the "Just Say No" and "D.A.R.E." crap which would remain very prominent in America well into the late 90's, and all of that poo poo was plastered on every possible piece of media or merchandise you can think of. fartknocker has a new favorite as of 03:40 on Nov 26, 2020 |

That D.A.R.E. rhetoric or at least a late 90s/early 00's version of it was used in Canada as well. Then in '07 it became "marijuana is a gateway drug because then you think the other drugs aren't as bad." That isn't completely false, but lots of teens smoked weed and never moved onto hard drugs AFAIK Speaking of weird school poo poo, I do recall in middle school my school had a group come in telling kids about the dangers of the sex trade and pimps. I was in sixth grade. Now this was 04-05, so there was still THE INTERNET IS A PLACE FULL OF LUNATICS NEVER GIVE OUT YOUR REAL NAME stigma. My neurodiverse rear end took every warning seriously because it was a Rule. When the presentation started with "So I met this guy online" I knew the girl did something wrong because meeting people on the Internet was a Bad Thing. My school was in a fairly middle class neighborhood which made that sort of presentation seem odd. I guess Robert Pickton just got caught and they wanted everybody to be careful?
