I was reading it as "someone bought me a vinyl record of the Smurfs in loving 2002” or something to that effect

Vs. say now, when someone would absolutely do that ironically and it would be less weird than in 2002 when vinyl collecting was at its nadir

I remember there being a thing in early 2000s internet where people were like "Papa Smurf is a Communist!!" like if you read between the lines you'd realize the Smurfs are Soviet propaganda

I remember there being a Jethro Tull/general dadrock thread a few years ago, we should do that again

Thick as a Brick is a good long commute song. Jethro Tull in general rules, it's got that old school ren faire fantasy quality

My only memory of the Bloodhound Gang was a track that opened with Pac-Man getting high as poo poo and I remember it made my 14-year-old self nearly wet my pants laughing. I don't even know if it was actually them, I think it was something I found on Napster.

Punk's not dead, it's...inexplicably angry at an old dance craze.

Why not 'gently caress The Charleston' or 'gently caress The Lindy Hop'?

Maybe it came out closer to when the Macarena was popular (the '95 version), but on Discogs the only two albums I am seeing of theirs since then are Beat The Bastards in '96 and gently caress The System in '03 and it's not on either of those.

Apparently there are a lot of girls named Macarena because when I do a search on "exploited gently caress the macarena" there's a number of porn results. Or maybe it's just one girl named Macarena who is VERY prolific.

Beastie Boys' Hot Sauce Committee Part Two is kind of a lame album title.

To be fair, it's difficult to overstate how annoying and omnipresent the Macarena was at the time. They made us learn that stupid dance in school, even.

I don't think that's true for everyone, I think there is also a category of person (of any age) that thinks music sucks now (or has sucked since whatever decade) because generally speaking as time goes on good music has become less visible and obnoxious bullshit has become more visible

Like yeah there's been tons of new bands coming out always forever but in my experience it's become harder to find the signal in the noise

For as much as I hate how much The Algorithm controls my life, YouTube has helped me find a lot of music I would have otherwise never heard of (this obscure Japanese 80s goth rock, for example) so I don't think it's a matter of signal:noise as much as it is that you kind of have to grease the wheels with regard to the types of music you listen to so you're not getting routed to the same poo poo all the time.

I've had that problem with New Retro Wave type stuff - there's an avalanche of that type of music but very little of it is legitimately good. For how many dozens of synthwave artists there are out there, there are like five who I could listen to and distinguish (basically anybody featured on a Hotline Miami soundtrack) while so many of them are basically making the same song over and over again. That's the big problem with the algorithmic directing of recommendations, you either hear the same poo poo over and over or you hear a bunch of different poo poo that sounds the same.
