The Three Mandatory Rules
Watch a movie appropriate to the challenge*
Write a review
Don't be a dick.

THE CHALLENGE BEGINS ON SEPTEMBER 27TH, @ 3AM EST in honor of the Witching Hour.

THE CHALLENGE ENDS ON THE 1ST OF NOVEMBER, @ 1PM EST
You will have to have logged your final movie at this point. Final remarks and totals can be posted after 1PM, but new movies to add to your total will not be counted.

Personal Goals & Challenges

The most common goal among participants is 31 movies, but there is no mandatory amount of films. You can participate with as much or as little enthusiasm as you want. You can watch as many movies as possible (We've had people literally watch hundreds! It was nuts.) However, people that meet the 31 film goal are eligible for rewards.

You can create any personal goals for yourself. Many use the challenge to catch up on movies that have been released through-out the year, some use it to finally watch that classic horror movie. You can use the challenge to watch all the films of a horror director, or an entire horror series you've been interested. You can concentrate on specific sub-genres like Creature Features or Giallos or Hammer produced films. You can watch films that are only new to you, or only rewatches. The possibilities are endless.

The only requirement is to watch a horror movie and then write about it. You can write a review, a list of thoughts you had while watching it, an analysis, essay or interpretation. You can post GIFs and screen grabs. The whole intention of this thread is to share what we're watching and our thoughts about it.

Honestly? Watching the movies is the easy part. It's finding something to say about them that gets difficult. But that's why it's a challenge!

You can always ask for a wildcard or recommendation.

What Movies Can I Watch?
movies, for the sake of this challenge, are considered anything longer than 60 minutes
Horror Movies
Thrillers
Horror Comedies (Tucker & Dale vs. Evil)
Horror Musicals (Rocky Horror, Phantom of the Paradise)
Movies Set During or Around Halloween (Hocus Pocus, The Guest)
Documentaries
- about Halloween (The American Scream)
- about the supernatural
- about the horror genre (Horror Noire)
- about horror movies (Never Sleep Again)
-about a subject that is justifiably horror-related (The Act of Seeing with Oneís Own Eyes, Cropsey)
Family Friendly movies that meet the above requirements (Alvin & The Chipmunks Meet Frankenstein)

(If you have questions about whether or not a movie counts, feel free to ask me.)

What DOESN'T Count
TV Shows (This is CineD, not TVIV)
mini-series
Masters of Horror episodes

These are always a big grey area that create a lot of headaches of what's considered "fair", and it gets exhausting trying to pick and choose what is justifiable. I love Stephen King's The Storm of the Century, and Twin Peaks The Return, but the format is wildly inconsistent in length. It's a little unfair for someone to watch a 45 minute episode of Masters of Horror and it counts the same as Never Sleep Again, which is a four hour investment. It also creates the grey area of "Is ____ show a mini-series? Technically season 1 is self-contained." Let's just avoid it altogether. Please just watch something else. This is a FILM forum, so just stick with movies for the challenge.

There will be the inevitable naysayer who posts "I don't care what the rules say, I'm going to count Netflix's Bly Manor." Just play nice and watch a movie instead. I probably won't call you out, but it will be ignored when it comes to tallying results for surprises, and it may just open you up to punishments. Consider this your warning.

There will be secret challenges announced through-out the month for those that want to be pushed outside of their comfort zones.

If you are working from a Letterboxd list, feel free to share it.

CineD has a Discord, and there is a horror-specific thread. Right now it is currently called "The Horror Director Tournament" based off Horror Director Tournament Thread (which I highly recommend reading). It will get a name change when the tournament is over to "October Challenge". Feel free to talk about this challenge thread in that channel before the name change.
The Horror Thread has its own Discord where group watches of horror movies are regularly scheduled

Benito Cereno posted:

Every October I make a list of horror movies on Netflix worth watching in an attempt to keep people from watching The Forest or whatever out of desperation. I used to do it on Tumblr, but now I do it as a Letterboxd list

This year I got really stupid and included movies from a Netflix, Hulu, Prime, and Shudder. Thereís over 150 movies on this yearís list because Iím an idiot

Anyway, I know you connoisseurs donít need the recommendations, but you might like to know whatís where, especially if youíre trying to fill out a challenge list

I whiffed on 31 last year, so this year I'm just going to try and beat my current record of 14. I'm unemployed so it should be easy, and I started making my list this summer so I'm pumped.

I'm going to watch 31 movies that I've never seen before. I'll probably manage more since I have basically nothing else to do, but this is my first October challenge so let's not get carried away.

Oh fuuuck yeah I can actually do this this year and I'm self-challenging to Only watch films streaming on Tubi.

This may cause some problems later in, but I'm genuinely looking forward to scrubbing the bottom of that barrel.

Here's my list too - https://letterboxd.com/jayx/list/oc...ptober-attempt/ - I'm trying to do Hooptober amongst it, and I've done a bunch of relevant movies in the build up but I'm separating them out as they won't count for this.

Aiming to mainly do films I've not seen before, but I'll probably slice some rewatches in that I haven't seen in 20+ years (like Hellraiser) as Hooptober has a 7x '2nd movie' criteria and there's a ton of franchises I only ever watched the first of, but don't necessarily remember much of.

Yeeeeeahhhh!!!

My goal this year is to finish up the Edgar Wright list (I think I have ~40 movies left) and dig into the TSZDT list after that.

Also there's no "at least 1hr" requirement this year???

Buglord

Going for 31 again this year. No specifics beyond that, other than to work towards filling in the movies I haven't seen from some various Top 100 lists (Edgar Wright, Slate, TSZDY). That's only around 22 movies for me so it's doable, but a couple aren't real easy to find to I'm not going to commit to that.

Speaking of - anyone know where I can watch Possession, Four Flies on Grey Velvet, and/or Brotherhood of the Wolf? I don't even see physical copies easily available.

e: editing in my pre-challenge totals for these lists, for reference

Edgar Wright's Top 100 Horror: 87/100
Slant Top 100 Horror: 86/100
TSZDT Top 100: 96/100

I've been plugging away at the Hooptober challenge on Letterboxd since it started last week, so I figure I'll just make finishing that my challenge on here.

Here's my list. https://letterboxd.com/moonsmilk/li...-danse-macabre/
I'm five films in on Hooptober and I'll probably watch one or two more before challenge starts here, so let's say 25, maybe? I'll hopefully manage more, but we'll see how it goes.
As I've been doing previous years, I'll be focusing on films that are new to me (with a few exceptions).

No idea how often I'll be posting in the thread. Might end up posting reviews in bulk this time. For reference, here's what I've watched so far:

1. Funny Games (1990s version)
2. Species II
3. The Witch That Came From The Sea
4. Paganini Horror
5. Silent Hill: Revelation

Can't help you on the other ones, but I remember you used to be able to rent Possession on MUBI. I'm not sure if you can still do this.

Unfortunately the bottom of the bottom of the barrel is actually on Amazon Prime. But good luck that sounds terrible!

I'm in for a little over 31! I don't have a concrete plan but the Fran challenges are great so I'll try and hit those, and maybe the Kult challenge, and hopefully some Scream Streams.

I've been looking forward to this!

My goal this year is to match what I ended up at last year at 11 movies at the least, but I'm going to shoot for 13 and see how it goes.

Instead of a firm list, I've got a pool of movies I'll be picking from, adding anything else that looks interesting that might come up between now and Halloween:

The Lighthouse
Knife + Heart
The Black Rider
The Lift
Theater of Blood
Hellraiser II
Deep Red
Brides of Dracula
The Mummy (1959)
Chopping Mall
Haxan
Manhunter
Nosferatu
Nosferatu (1979)
Twins of Evil
November (2017)
The Vast of Night
Us
Noroi: The Curse
Shin Godzilla
Wishmaster

Of the above, Brides of Dracula is the only rewatch, so I'm really looking forward to it!

I'm in for 31 this year. I have no real plan or self-imposed challenge I intend to follow; like everything else in life, I'm just gonna fly by the seat of my pants and hope it all works out.

I'm in for 31 at the very least plus the Fran Challenges and whatever I catch on the Scream Stream.

It's been a tough year so I'm giving myself complete freedom to watch or rewatch whatever I'm feeling like in the moment. I think the main focus though will be on Universal, Hammer, and various Vincent Price films.

I need something to distract me from politics, so I pledge to watch 62 horror movies. Hopefully two movies a day will be enough to distract me those clowns up in Washington

Additionally, I will watch all those movies in production order! Although I reserve the right to violate that rule for Fran Challenges, if necessary.

Here is my stack

Planned for 50 and did 75 last year. Will set the same goal this year in case I get burnt out and don't make 75. No theme other than new to me. Got a list of potentials but that usually goes out the door as soon as people start posting write ups and I find things that seem interesting. In fact a large chunk of the list is stuff from last year's thread. And obv the Fran challenges.

Last year I managed to watch 45 horror films for my personal best. I want to go for an even 50 which will be a tough challenge as Iím not working night shifts this time (which was nice as all I had to do was walk around the site every hour which meant lots of Netflix/Prime). Iím ready.

Question for Fran, though, are Kaiju movies (Godzilla, King Kong, etc.) counted? I remember a year or two back they were and Iím not seeing them listed.

Aggh, I gotta wait two more days to start? Killin' me here.

I'll try getting 31 in.

Criteria:
1) Haven't seen it
2) Under 700 votes on imdb
3) Looks like it might actually be good and get at least a 3/5 rating from me. I don't enjoy garbage DTV stuff so I'll try to avoid dipping into questionable Prime/Tubi territory

I'll have to keep an eye on the thread for any good but obscure movies that pop up because I'm currently well short of having 31 lined up.

I wasn't actively participating last year but I managed to get to almost 30 movies (and had a lot of fun doing so), so I'm in this year for 31. Gonna just go with movies I haven't seen while allowing myself some notable rewatches.

Last year gave the Greasy Strangler, the Next of Kin and Viy so I hope to discover some comparable gems I haven't seen yet.

Do you like scary movies?

For how much of a nightmare quarantine lockdown's been and continues to be, there is not enough words to say to describe how much I've looked forward to this and how it's lifting my spirits.

My October 2020 Criteria

1) Watch two films a day minimum, no maximum. We're watching movies until eyes bleed!
2) No films I've already reviewed in past October or May challenges.
3) Do all Franchallenges.

Now the hard part's waiting until the 27th.

edit to add #3, didn't think it needed to be said but might as well.

I did my own challenge last year and got to 25 films. I was planning on trying to go for 25 again, but considering that there are three different pro-wrestling tournaments going on through October, I'll play it safe and shoot for 20 films.(though hopefully I can go over)

I don't have a set list, so I'll just be winging it!
