I don't think this is true, all the patch notes suggest they spawn separately from the ghost. It's possible to see them in other rooms because they'll sometimes spawn next to (or inside of) walls, but that's a bug. We've even gotten them on the floor above the ghost room due to the orbs spawning up near the ceiling, but they've always been stationary regardless of where the ghost is at any given time.

Yeah, anytime I find orbs, they stay showing up at that location no matter how long I look or what the ghost is doing. The only reason orbs could be considered unreliable is the (thankfully rare) aforementioned instances where they spawn near/in walls and can be seen in a different room. It can be difficult to find those instances, but it's still under your control, unlike EMF/writing where it's at least partially up to the ghost. Also, check every angle to be sure. I remember one time in Tanglewood where the orbs were in the laundry room, but they didn't show w/ a view through either door (which covers like 90% of that room), and I didn't find them until I pointed a camera at the back corner, which the door views didn't cover. In order of reliability from personal experience, I'd say temperature > spirit box = orbs > writing = prints > EMF. If I'm ever missing evidence and have to guess, I'm always going EMF.

Generally, listening for sounds and looking for open doors or misplaced objects while the place warms up is good on Beta Professional for me, then bring in the thermometer either to confirm or if you still can't find it. On large maps, "sometimes" the parabolic mic helps, but it has a few limitations that make it tricky to use effectively. There's definitely still bugs, but the dev seems pretty good about fixing them in a timely manner.

The EMF reader only 'reads' the point/area at which the ghost -starts- the hunt, with a few reads early in the hunt. While they're wandering, you don't typically get EMF readings.

EDIT: Ghost orbs originate vaguely where the ghost room is, and can swoop in random directions, sometimes appearing just outside the intended area. The orbs themselves 'travel' a bit, but not with the ghost itself. If you watch where you've already seen ghost orbs, they keep spawning there, even during a hunt.

EDIT 2: Re: EMF 5 specifically, EMF 5 can occur whenever any other EMF event happens with a high random chance. The EMF reader actually tells you exactly what a ghost has been doing:
1: Nothin'
2: Ghost touched something
3: Ghost moved a physics object (I think this can also happen with a few other events, but physics stuff is the only specific thing I know of)
4: Ghost manifested or otherwise caused an 'event'
5: Randomly replaces any of the above, but is evidence of specific ghost types, the lower number will still appear at a larger radius around the given event.

Based on this, the ghost manifesting right in front of me and then walking through me should have been a 4 then, right? And then throwing physics objects around should have been a 3.

Never got a blip on that contract. Only time it's happened so far so I'm chalking it up to a bug.

It's possible it manifested further away and you didn't notice until it went there. Or it was part of another event. Or just a bug. The second might be because it tossed an item towards you from out of the range. You get the blip where the object -was-, not where it -went-.

Inversely, I've gotten false positives, EMF 4 where literally noone saw the ghost manifest (which is why I think 3 and 4 might also be attributed to a few other ghost event things)

EDIT: Also, sometimes tools will bug and appear 'on' when they're not. If you ever notice something like that, try clicking the tool off and on or dropping it and picking it back up. I get weird audio glitches with the spirit box sometimes until I do this.

That still happens with me and cameras pretty frequently, about every third or fourth game we'll have one camera that we have to turn off and back on to get it to show up on the monitor. It seems to be a more common issue when we have them on tripods, for whatever reason.

And as far as the EMF just not working is concerned... well I've definitely wandered all around the high school with an EMF meter with no results only to remember it should normally have one green LED on at all times... first rule of ghost hunting is "turn the equipment on" I guess.

In terms of getting accurate and useful readings on the EMF, honestly we've had the best luck with getting EMF 5 by finding the ghost room and leaving two EMF meters on the floor (or a table/desk/counter if it's located somewhere in the middle of the room). Usually when there's activity they'll stay on long enough for us to run over and see how many lights are on. It takes some of the guesswork of finding and following the ghost out of the equation, though we almost certainly miss some level 5 events that way anyway.

So there's equipment that you use every single game either to find out what ghost it is or to complete the other listed items. But then there's equipment I don't ever seem to use. Parabolic Mic, Candles, Infrared Light Sensor, and sound sensors. I also hardly use the head-mounted cameras. When I'm checking cameras on the computer, I don't like watching the head-mounted ones. It's frustrating. Do you guys use those other sensors and how good are they?

Son of Thunderbeast

I was so salty about the parabolic mic. I figured it would be like real ones, i.e. a range in tens of meters. Never got anything useful out of it, so I looked it up to see if I was using it wrong and it turns out its effective range is roughly the length of your box truck. Just a money sink imo

Evil Kit

I'm viable ladies.

There's been a few recent fixes/buffs that should make both the Parabolic Mic and Sound Sensor better (Sensor had a bug that was just fixed that prevented it from detecting ghost footsteps if it was too high up ). That said with no in-game guide for what sound levels = what actions it's kinda difficult to make use of them effectively.

Sound Sensor overall is gonna be much better for large maps imo if you're trying to find the ghost I think. Infrared Sensors is straight up just a motion sensor that also lights up so it's basically another 4 of those. I did wish it did something like slow the ghost down or something if they walked through it as a sort of defensive measure you could set up to buy time.

Yeah the Parabolic is much better (on beta branch) than it used to be, but it's still kind of finicky. The range is much longer than it was, and seems to be tighter too. I've actually managed to find the ghost room in the prison/asylum/high school using just the parabolic since they revamped it. It's still pretty loose and hard to use, honestly, since you can pick up the sound of other players interacting with stuff in the environment, and I've definitely switched lights on not thinking about the fact that the parabolic would pick up the sound of the switch and sent myself on wild goose chases. Also the update time on it is kind of slow.

But I can think of at least one or two contracts in the last week where my group found the ghost room mostly through using it. I know it's probably unlikely, but it'd be great if they gave you the option to realistically listen to the parabolic mic. I think giving you the option to hear directionally but at the expense of muting or ducking sounds coming from behind or to the sides (and maybe muting your radio?) would be a fun twist on the idea.

And yeah, sound sensors can be useful in bigger maps to help narrow down where the ghost is. The range on them isn't huge, but we find them useful in the large maps, by putting them in hallways or using them to monitor/rule out bigger rooms that can be hard to search for activity (the gym in the school) or are kind of out of the way (the cell blocks and upper floor in the prison). That said, even then we don't tend to use them unless we're having trouble finding the ghost.

I almost never use Infrared sensors. They're mostly just kind of fun to put in the residential locations so you can see them flash on through the windows when you're out in the truck or whatever. I don't think I've ever used one to actually find the ghost, they're just kind of creepy sometimes.

Candles are kind of a waste, too, but if you're in a situation where a contract drags on they have some limited utility. As near as I can tell, they function as a light source for reducing sanity drain, but not for purposes of using the spirit box, so if you're low on sanity but still need to collect evidence they can be helpful. Especially if you have a ghost that's quick to turn the breaker off. But they'll eventually go out, and I have no idea if they matter for ghosts like the Mare. We mostly don't use them except for silly ambiance purposes, lol.

Another potential Spirit Bug: If you alt-tab out of the game and back in, sometimes voice recognition doesn't pick up your mic properly (even though actual voice communication does) -- To fix this, alt-tab out, and make sure you LEFT CLICK back into the game.

Candles are good since they completely negate sanity loss while you carry one, or are within a certain radius of a placed one.

Head mounted cams are specifically if you want to pretend your friends are tripods, or watch in real time when they die. (Though, I will admit, they kind of suck simply because for non-VR players they report the actual player's view incorrectly. Seems to be fine for VR players, though.)

Infrared Light Sensors are basically Trade-off motion sensors. They do the same thing, but instead of alerting the truck, they alert anyone nearby enough to see the light turn on.

Sound Sensors are... About as useless as you say, unless you're absolutely stumped otherwise to the ghost's location. It can help someone in the van track where the ghost is, but not really any more effectively than the rest of the tools.

My core issue with all the extra tool bits is you A) don't have the room to effectively bring them along while also bringing the more important tools for discovering evidence and B) the amount of time (most specifically on Professional) to figure out the ghost type before you run out of sanity and it starts chain hunting is kind of short.

The glow is a guide, my friend. Though it falls to you to avert catastrophe, you will never fight alone.
I imagine the vagueness of tool use, while intentional for gameplay reasons, makes it harder to identify bugs for fixing it.

On the other hand, it's very in tone with ghost hunting. "I dunno, maybe this means ghost? it works half the time so gently caress it" until of course your neck is snapped by the ghoul of the hour.

I have run into a light radius during a Mare hunt and had it turn around like it was hit with a smoke stick.

Also like a smoke stick, it came back 5 seconds later and killed me anyway. I have no idea if this was part of the standard coding behavior or a bug in the code at the time.

I mostly like candles and head-mounts for doing challenge runs. It's hella fun to say "No flashlights, candles and switches only" and then go hunting. Or "No flashlights or switches, eyeballs and headmounts only". I just solo'd the prison in about 5 minutes because I wanted to see what the map was like. Only took basic equipment so I wouldn't lose anything if I died. Found ghost orbs in the cafeteria using the existing cameras, got EMF 5 as soon as I showed up there, then realized I forgot to set the right mic so I couldn't really use the spirit box. Ran back, threw down a journal where the camera could see it, did a quick sweep for fingerprints, noticed the ghost was very active and turning lights on everywhere. Got back to the van with 20 seconds to spare in setup time, debated a little bit with myself, then successfully guessed Jinn.

I got money for guessing correctly (yay) but the weird thing is I also got $10 in insurance money? What's that about?

This game spooked the poo poo out of me last night. We were running the bleasdale farmhouse and it was in the foyer, right inside the front door, so we'd set up everything and had narrowed it down to two possibilities, Jinn or Poltergeist. It was just a matter of finding fingerprints or EMF 5. I was pretty sure we didn't have any fingerprints so i figured we could provoke it to move around some and confirm EMF 5. We had the EMF reader sitting in front of a camera and my wife was in the van watching it.

I stood just outside the front door and yelled and chanted Nancy Jackson for like a minute. I'd had success with this before and gotten activity bumps (maybe coincidental), but this time the ghost didn't do poo poo--biggest activity bump during this time was a 1. So i figured, okay, maybe I'll have to go in and grab the emf. The loving second i step inside, the door slams behind me, my flashlight starts flickering, and the ghost starts appearing a few meters in front of me, and we both yell irl lol. I guess she was just standing there getting pissed listening to me chant her name and waiting for me to walk in like a dumbass
