Legumes like green peas and chickpeas are just a cheap filler for protein and they up the carbohydrates and calories in a dog food easily, so when the grain-free popularity started, a lot of dog food brands decided to throw those peas in everywhere to help cut their bottom line. Nobody knew it had the potential to cause DCM. But even grain-inclusive foods have legumes in them quite frequently; and there have been grain-inclusive foods that have appeared on the lists of feed for dogs suffering DCM. I recommend avoiding legumes, corn, wheat, and soy if you can. If your dog isn't neutered, look for foods that don't have a lot of white potatoes, too, as they can have phytoestrogens that can screw with their hormones.
