Navy Bean Soup may not sound sexy but this broth is bold. I always buy a big boneless ham steak and dice it in lieu of bacon. I'd love to try a ham bone but I've never seen that for sale anywhere.
most grocery stores in the midwest will sell hamhock, which will give you pretty much the same effect as hambone+hamsteak, and will add the bonus of sloppy fatty pig skin which really helps the bean broth imho
